In Search Of the Goddess

AloverstreesGod and Goddess 196x300 In Search Of the GoddessAs pagans we know that the Gods and Goddess are aspects of the Divine that we attribute characteristics and virtues to. They become archetypes of the people we would like to become.

Now when we take our first steps in to paganism we are greeted hundreds of new gods and goddess so many that it is impossible to learn them all. If you follow a pagan path you will learn about the deities of you path “lord and Lady” in Wicca “the Norse Pantheon” In Northern Tradition Paths “the Greek Pantheon” for Hellenics and the list goes on.

For solitary practitioner the search for the correct deity can be a long journey being that as you grown in knowledge of your path you desires change and so will the person you wish to grow in to.

When seeking your goddess you need to work out if you want a non descript female form, which embodies “Woman / Feminine energy” or an Existing Deity from history or Mythology. Or even a mix of both.

When choosing your God figure choose one that complements your goddess. The Image of you deity whether visualised in the mind or in manifestation or imagery or sculpture should hold great reverence and become a connection to the divine.

One of the most commons symbols of the deities is the sun and the moon and most people assign the God to the Sun and the Goddess to the Moon. But there are Solar Goddess and Luna Gods their have even god who where Luna gods who where moved to become solar gods.

The Luna Cycle 28 days (approx) links with the menstrual cycle of a woman and the phases of the moon and create a symbology of womanhood.

Now when you are seeking your personal goddess what you are looking for is a woman who holds the characterises you admire and would like to have. The divine will point you in the right direction. Once you have found your Deities your connection with the divine will grow stronger and so will your magick.

Keeping in mind that the deities are aspects or facets of the divine. The aspect or facet you choose becomes a personal connection to the Divine.

For the beginner and experienced the idea of the divine and deities is easy to come to terms with. The divine, the creative intelligent is so big that each of us has to find our own understanding of it and finding our own way of worshiping it. some time that worship can be shared other time it personal and intimate. It is our connection with our deities that brings us closer to the divine.

For many pagan paths the main stages of human life are played out in the stories of the gods, birth death rebirth, marriage childbirth etc. These cycles of life are then used to mark the seasons the cycles of the sun and moon are used to mark the cycle of life.

For both the god and goddess there are define stages

The Youth stage-
This is the maiden for the goddess and the youth / warrior stage for the god

The Adult Stage
for the god it the stage where he becomes king or husband for the goddess it motherhood.

The Old age stage
This is the wise stage the god is seen as a sage and the goddess a crone

Death
This is the underworld stage where the god is defeated to rise again or is the lord of the underworld for the goddess it a time of being hidden unseen. The Dark Mother

I am often asked how do you find the correct deities on a personal level to work with your patron god and or goddess. I away say look at your life, hobbies and interest and then find a deity how shares those interests since many deities share the same area you have a lot to choose from read their mythology and you will find that in no time you will have a deity that you can connect with on a spiritual and personal level.

For example if you are interested in sports seek out Gods and goddess of sports and then find one who has all the aspects you can relate to. (I will put a list of sports gods and goddess at the end to show available deities). There will be something in their stories that you will be able to relate to something that feels so right that a connection will be formed a connection to the divine.

Seeking your personal deity will help you to also find the correct path to spiritual fulfilment just remember that all goddess are but one Goddess and all gods are but one God and these are the masculine and feminine forms and energies of the divine and by naming it you give it form and substance you create an Image to focus on so you can manifest the divine in physical and spiritual form.

Spells: Healing a Friend or Relative

witch spells 150x150 Spells: Healing a Friend or RelativePurple paper

White yarn or string

A pair scissors

Fresh violets (whole, with stems)

Black pen

A purple candle

A small vase or holder (for flowers)

This spell is for healing a friend or family member. It is best done when the moon is full, but you can do it whenever you feel it necessary.

Light the candle and fill the small vase with water. Place the freshly cut violets in the little vase and say a chant, focusing on the well-being of the person and the healing of their ailment.

Cut a heart out of the purple and write the name of the person on one side, and a short but heartfelt “Get Well!” message on the other side. Poke a small hole in the top right side of the heart and thread the white string through it, tie it, and attach it to the vase.

Give the little vase of violets to the target person and await their recovery.

Discrimination Is It?

dianic wicca Discrimination Is It?Yesterday I read a post from a young lady whose medical condition prevented her from becoming Wicca on the Dianic path, now I do not know enough about her medical condition but I have seen TV programs and documentaries on the subject and have heard the struggles that people with this condition go through.

There is a lot of pain, surgery, psychological evaluations, rejection from family and friends during the healing process and after as the person adapts to their new life. I was totally shocked when I found out that when this person was lead to Dianic Wicca and found that she was not welcome.

Now Amy is Transgender so was diagnosed with gender dysphoria (discontent with the biological sex they were born with) and according to the principles of Dianic Wicca only cissexual women, (aka “women born women”) can join. Although there are groups within Dianic Wicca, which are eclectic, which have an appreciation of cultural diversity, ecological concern, and familiarity with sophisticated concepts of psyche and transformation are characteristic in which she would be welcome.

But as a perceived pagan elder I have to be fair to both sides when I first read the original post my reactions where based some where between the 2nd and 3rd degree of a pagan path (see the pagan degrees) I used my Feeling Man (Water) and Sensation Man (Earth) to base my argument both of which where screaming it wrong, it wrong.

My views where coloured one by the fact that I myself had found discrimination with Wicca due to my sexuality many, many, many years ago and the work that I have done as a race relations officer.

As I woke this morning I still had bile in my mouth from the idea of Wicca discriminating and as I took my daily walk with the dog across the fields my mind kept focusing on “Do what you will but harm none”.

Now I know that discrimination in all form causes harm, I have experience my fair share and even still face some today. Now for a belief system that most basic rule is to cause no harm how can they openly discriminate?

Now originally (most basic idea) Wicca was based on balance between the genders male female, masculine energy and feminine energy which was a mirror for the god and goddess which did exclude gays and lesbians as it was deemed that “their energy” was off balanced a gay mans energy was not truly masculine and a lesbians was not truly feminine. But in time groups who where a little wiser chose to split away from main stay Wicca and create off shoots gay Wicca and Dianic Wicca to name but two.

Now modern Wicca is much more open to Gays, lesbians and transgender but there are still a few of the old school about. So as I sat down to write this I chose to be objective, each religion has it rules and regulations and people that choose to follow that path must adhere to rule set out even if others think they are wrong you can not choose what parts of a belief structure to follow. If you find a part of any belief structure ethical or morally wrong you have the right to challenge them or leave and find one that is more suitable for you.

You do not have the right to force yourself into a belief structure that one finds you unacceptable or one you wish to change to suit your own desires or agenda you can not claim that you are being discriminated against because you are deemed unsuitable. It would be like a black man complaining that he cannot join the KKK and claiming that he is being discriminated against because of his colour.

Now in the case of Dianic Wicca with regards to transsexuals there are groups with the Dianic path which do allow and welcome transgender and have mixed groups of male and female which follow the beliefs and ideas of Dianic Wicca. But the pure Dianic Wicca was created for cissexual women to worship the goddess in some ways you can think of them as “Nuns” a women only order. It would be wrong to say that Dianic Wicca is against transgender it is much more correct to say that Dianic Wiccan for women who are and where born women who wish to follow the goddess in a particular direction.

But ultimately with in any path it is down to the elders of that group to see if you are suitable, if you are found suitable you are asked to join if not a good elder will be able to point you in the direction of a path that you will find suitable and fulfilling.

Now in the case for claiming that Dianic Wicca actively discriminates against transgender is a difficult one as there are groups within the Dianic structure that provide access for men and transgender to join. In this world of equal opportunity for all genders Dianic Wicca does provide equal opportunity to non- cissexual women including men to join it path.

Ultimately we have to accept that there are rules to pagan paths and not all pagan paths are suitable for everyone, a straight woman will be refused access to a gay male only coven not out of discrimination but out on unsuitability to that group.

For each of us we need to find the path that suits us Wicca being the most public seems to be the first port of call for many pagans although for many it just a pit stop on the road of personal and spiritual discovery.

I wish Amy much success on finding a group within the Dianic structure that she will feel at home within although I feel that she may find a more rewarding path in the future.

Change and the world today

world in black and white hands 1 300x300 Change and the world todayI must say that I think I am turning in to grumpy old man I look out on to the world and the beauty and wonder I saw as a child has been mired by the horrors we have created. Know I am not just talking about the wars and conflicts since they where their before I was born and will continue way past my death.

I am talking about human behaviour it one of the reason I moved away from city life and decided to live in the countryside. Now I have not always be a good boy I have done some wrong in my life like many others I am not perfect but through my path and communion with the Goddess I have come to live a life that I can be proud of.

I face my daily woes like everyone else lack of money, rising prices, stress, illness, social isolation, not matter what I smile and continue through them knowing even in my darkest of days a ray of light will guide me through them.

I know that I have the power with the will of the Gods to change any aspect of my life but I cannot change the world. It is only as one voice can we bring change to the world as a whole. When we unite in one voice and towards one goal will change on a global scale will happen.

But where to start… now that the biggest question do we work towards stopping war and conflict or start with our own families and communities?

I would love to see world peace but I have come to realise the world is like a tree (not to be confused with the world tree / Yggdrasil) each leaf is a trouble, conflict, horror, blessing, a joy etc and when you remove one leaf two replace it. Remove a leaf of conflict and you create more war not the peace that was desired this happens because you have to reach across the tree causing damage to other leafs on your journey to pluck the desire leaf.

Taking this idea of the tree each branch is a continent and along that branch smaller branches become the countries along that branch the smaller branches cities and towns each producing a leaf creating the canopy of the tree. If you stand back and look at the tree you will see that some branches look lush and green others look sick and others look wild.

Now the big problem we have and I am sorry for the tree analogy is that the people in power only focus on the way the tree looks choosing to envy the bright green sides or choosing to cut away branches that upset the ascetic of the tree without forethought of what will replace the missing branch.

Now for true change to take place we have to start with the roots not the leafs. Now it is people that are the roots of this tree it is our energy that causes the tree to grow and our behaviour that makes the leafs shaping the look of the tree.

If we want the tree to grow strong and look wonderful we have to start with ourselves and our families and offspring. We have to stop creating generations of children who have no respect, we have to rid ourselves of the fear we have other that are different from ourselves. We have to build communities we are proud to live in, safe environments for our children to grow and flourish in we have to teach them so they can continue our works and their children can continue their until the day we not only have a perfect world but a beautiful tree we can be proud of.

I wish I had the wisdom to say what need to be done and how it should be done to bring about this better future but I don’t I just know that if we keep on the path we are travelling our future will not be a happy one.

I would love to say that we need to discipline our children when they do things wrong but governments have said that we cant it unlawful we have to take back the power and force the governments around the world to hear the needs of the people rather then them acting on our behalf doing what they think is right for us.

You can’t tell your children off without them threatening you with childline, you cant walk down the street with out the fear that a group of hooded children may do something, your brother and sisters are force to fight in unjust wars this is the future we have created it about time with one voice we say stop!

We want our children to be respectful, we want to be able to walk the streets without fear, and we don’t want to fight because you want change! We want to fight for change! We want to open our arms and share our differences instead of fearing them.

We must become the beacons for change. The light that shows the way let our action speak louder than any words.

I am going to end this with the words from the greatest love of all one because the words can say all that needs to be said and needs to be done –

I believe the children are our are future

Teach them well and let them lead the way

Show them all the beauty they possess inside

Give them a sense of pride to make it easier

Let the children’s laughter remind us how we used to be

Everybody searching for a hero

People need someone to look up to

I never found anyone to fulfill my needs

A lonely place to be

So I learned to depend on me

[Chorus:]

I decided long ago, never to walk in anyone’s shadows

If I fail, if I succeed

At least I live as I believe

No matter what they take from me

They can’t take away my dignity

Because the greatest love of all

Is happening to me

I found the greatest love of all

Inside of me

The greatest love of all

Is easy to achieve

Learning to love yourself

It is the greatest love of all
