Where Magick come to life

The Pentagram

The pentagram a simple symbol but one that has it roots in history and many religious paths. The pentagram has strong links to black magic, witchcraft and rock music,. The pentagram is a symbol of Unity, the goddess (the orbit of venus produces a five pointed star), the four elements and spirit, the five Chinese elements, the God, and the five wounds of Christ, many others.
The pentagram has be linked to magicks since the mid 19th century but has historical information dating back 3000bc to Sumerian times where it was used as a pictogram for the word “UB” meaning “corner, angle, nook; a small room, cavity, hole; pitfall. You can logically see the reason why the pentagram is used in magicks the idea of creating “a small room” in which magicks where to be preformed by drawing a symbol is still used today in many neopagan and wiccan paths.
The symbol of the pentagram has been adopted as a religious symbol by Wicca’s and some other pagan paths, in the same way Christians adopted the cross. Most wiccan’s and neo pagans will have pentagram rings, pentagram charms, pentagram pendants, pentagram earrings even pentagrams on the books of shadows and tarot boxes they will have them everywhere.
I am not sure that this over exposure to the pentagram has lessened the power of the symbol but it no longer inspires the fear and aw it used to, in days past wearing a pentagram openly was a badge of honour a sense of pride in your beliefs. Nowadays everyone has them in the jewellery box.
The pentagram as a magickal symbol itself is not good or bad it how its used and it has many uses apart from pagan jewellery. The first this to look at is which what you draw it right side up or upside down the easiest way to remember which way to draw one is to remember point up for spiritual endeavours point down for earthly matters.
A higher purpose – spiritual
These are magick that required direct spiritual begins for celebration, paying respect to the spirits and deities
For earthly matters
These are magicks that are for personal benefit rather than spiritual enlightenment.
The upside down pentagram has had a long association with negative magicks and the Devil from the general public and I am not saying that upside down pentagrams are not used for darker magicks outside a spiritual pagan path but within the pagan paths we do not pay the upside down pentagram any real interest.
But the upside down pentagram can and should be used to descend into ones self with the help of the dark god / goddesses to find understanding with in our self we are a result of our actions and those who actions have change and developed us.(ritual to follow)
In the pagan paths the pentagram is drawn in one complete motion and depending on which type of pentagram your drawing depends on your start position. Now it does not matter how you use your pentagram just remember that it is more than just a jewellery symbol but a magickal tool to help you connect with higher forms give it some respect when your drawing it out.

Inverted pentagram ritual for self-discovery

Inverted pentagram 150x150 Inverted pentagram ritual for self discoveryOnly perform this ritual if you’re in a stable emotional state of mind, as this ritual is design to invoke personal discoveries some of which can be painful so having someone to be with you after ritual can help.

Timing.

Waning moon to black moon (note the closer to the black moon the stronger the results so start with baby steps start just after full moon and work towards a black moon do not perform day after day unless you have done some practice I could take a year or mores practice before you can do the whole waning moon).

Deity

This requires one of the dark deities those that deal with the realms of the dead, it is advisable to choose one you are familiar with or one of your own gender.

Equipment

Wand / Athame

Candle (colour any)

Preparation

Take a look at your life and you will see that you repeat the same mistake over and over again, it could be with relationships or work life you will need to question your self why doe relationships fail or why do I never get promoted once you have found the question you are ready to start

Cleansing

You will order prescription drugs online need to shower or bath and as you do just keep remembering times when you have made the mistake, dress in light clothing.

Create your scared space

No need for formal circle a energy bubble will do just as long as u have enough room for candle and wand / Athame.

The Invocation

In darkness you hide

In shadows you dwell

You hold my greatest fears

You who command and protect

<deity> reveal to me by darkest fears my hidden shame

Be my guide and reveal the truth

Let me see what I did not see before.

<deity> see me as worth to face this trail

Spend a moment or to in silent meditation focusing on what your trying to achieve, when ready pick up wand / Athame and trace a invoking inverted pentagram while chanting.

Now take the time unwind the door now let me see what was before

Let <deity> be my guide, Let <deity> be my guide, Let <deity> be my guide

(Visualise the pentagram forming).

Once the pentagram is complete see the edges brighten but only filling the internal structure of the star until it becomes a bright star.

The say out load

Door before me only my guide and I have free travel both ways (light candle) this light will bar all spirits and negatives entrance to this realm now open and let me in.

Now visualise the door beginning to open,

As the door opens you can make out a small boat on the banks of a river it is dark as you and the deity step in to the boat the boat moves in to the current and you start to travel on the river you look behind you and you can see the candle in the door way getting further away.

Your guide explains that you’re travelling to the underworld as the boat travels deeper you notice that the river is getting thicker and blacker and just off in the distance you can make out a large jetty and a very large house. In no time at all you find yourself along side the jetty your guide offers standing on the jetty offering you a hand to get out of the boat.

Your guide leads you up the path towards the house; the house has so many windows and you marvel at its size, once your at the door your guide warns you of what you will find inside, he warns you that although you can view and feel events they can not harm you

You guide will ask you if you are ready to face your fears if you are not ready you will be returned to the boat and the doorway and you will leave. If you stay, the door will open and you step through.

Inside you find a large hall with many doors you are asked to walk freely around the house and if you feel a door calling to you open it step through and you will find yourself in a part of your past you will be able to rewind, stop and ask yourself questions such has why did you say that what are you feeling you will get to observe your actions and feelings as an outsider seeing ever action as if it was a movie of your life. Once you have got all you can from this room find another door to which to walk through, you may enter another event in your life to which you do the same ask questions and view or you may find yourself back in the boat travelling back to the doorway (ant time you want to leave think boat and open a door and you will find yourself back in the boat) once their step through and prepare yourself for next step.

Next step

You will need to close the door lift the candle to the centre of the star and ignite the centre so the star glows bright see the light fade leaving the lines of the pentagram pick up your wand/ Athame and banish the pentagram.

Now spend some thinking about what you have seen and felt what lesson did you learn.

Do Pagans pray

binding love spell 150x150 Do Pagans prayPagans do pray but not in the Christian way with palms pressed on bended knee. For many neo pagans the Christian way is considered pleading rather then praying. For a pagan a pray is a direct correspondence with a deity /spirit / or divine and are used mostly for gaining wisdom, and that being said many pagans will prepare to pray.

Preparation will include ritual cleansing or bath or shower, preparing sacred space have the appropriate offerings for the deity / spirit.

A circle or sacred space is created and then the deity is called to attend offering are offer to encourage the presence of the deity / spirit.

The person once they have felt the presence of the deity / spirit the person would state who they are and by what right they have to call the deity / spirit in question. This can often be a long process of speaking your history, training and anything that the person thinks the deity would like to know.

If the deity / spirit sees the person as worthy they will stay the person would the petition the deity / spirit for what they require listing the reason why they need or want and how it will be used. Only the very foolish will try to strike a bargain offering personal favours in return for what they require.

If the deity / spirit has been duly impressed by your petition the answers will come to you it almost like speaking with the words of the spirit or deity you will know whether your going to get what you need or not if you are going to get the you will be told what you need to change to create the successful or the reasons why your not going to receive what you what.

Prays can be combined with creative visualisations which are used to increase the experience and spiritual connections to the deity /spirit. Prays to the element are often used to allow a new student of the art to connect with the elemental forces,

Here is an example of a pray please feel free to adapt any way you wish

Pray to air

I <insert name> stand here before you almighty element of air, I am a child of air with out you I cease to exists, and I call you as your child you touch me inside and out you who are my life’s breath the gentle breeze on my skin, my wild natures are your wild winds, my thought are your words and wisdoms.

I inhale you and you fill me you touch each and every cell in me we are one connected I carry you in me.

Air I honour you Air am I worthy….

… I <insert name> who seen as worthy, petition that you almighty air to share your understanding How do I <insert name> become more at one with the elemental for of air what do I not see what do I not know where do I need to go to connect with you. I ask this of you as I need to have greater understand of you air so I may grow as a person both in my daily life and my spiritual path.

(Silent meditation comes now as you share the connections when ready to continue and you will no what and when to say what you answer will be you would normal assume the element of air similar to drawing down the moon)

I am Air the breath of life the gentle winds the soft breeze the wild gales and hurricanes…. (just say what feels right )

Always end prays by thanking the spirit /deity releasing sacred space in your normal way.

I have not come across any other formal for pagan prays although their must be a few prays are also associated with spells and ritual work as a whole each of them are a pray but are seen as performing magicks rather than pray work.

Chanting is also another form of pray but is referred to as energy rising and as I sit here and think very few pagan books mention pray and if they do they are very under played although their are books on pagan pray. I not sure if its more to do with the neo pagan paths that remove Christian terms from the text that pray seems to be a little under rated. But whether we pray or do ritual we must remember that we are communicating with spiritual beings and we should show them honour in our words and our deeds.

So mote it is one of the common ways of ending communications with spiritual beings in ritual which means the same thing as amen “so it be” so we it truth much of what pagans do is pray it just that we call it by a different name.

Mabon Apple butter

applebutter 150x150 Mabon Apple butterSince Mabon is the second harvest of the 3 harvest festivals of the wheel of the year and deals with the collections of fruit, this recipe is perfect for Mabon and is not hard to follow.

Lughnasadh and Lammas

lughnasadh 150x150 Lughnasadh and Lammas Lughnasadh (pronounced loo’nass’ah) 1st August. Is one of the eight Sabbats that witches, Wiccan’s and neo pagans observe Lughnasadh is originally a Celtic festival held to honour the Celtic god Lugh foster mother “Tailtiu “ who is said to of died of exhaustion after clearing the plains of Ireland for agriculture.

Lughnasadh is technically a funeral feast where patrons would show honour to Tailtiu by feasting and playing games. Since much of pagan life revolved around agriculture Lughnasadh be came the first day of the Harvest season, which would continue, to Samhain.

Since the emergence of Wiccan and the creation of the wheel of the year Lughnasadh as taken its place in modern pagan life and seen less as a funeral feast and more of a harvest festival.

Many neo pagan interchange between Lughnasadh and Lammas with Lammas being a Anglo-Saxon harvest festival also know as hlaefmass, or loaf mass with strong connection to the church and is considered to be a Christian festival.

Some of the traditional events that would, and do take place on Lughnasadh and Lammas is the baking of bread and handfasting and the harvesting of the first fruits. Predominantly wheat, and making corn dollies.

It does amaze me that many books on Wicca and neo pagan practices still describe Lughnasadh and Lammas as the same thing which can get very confusing if your trying to understand what you are celebrating.

The festival that is on the 1st August has many names including Lammas, Lughnasadh, 1st Harvest, Bread Harvest, Festival of First Fruits, Gŵyl Galan Awst (Welsh) etc. but all share many similarities in mythologies, activities and purpose.

If we can except 3 basic truths

1.      Lughnasadh and Lammas where ancient festivals which where based on the cycles seen in agricultural societies and local mythologies.

2.      That we use the cycles of nature as they would have been and since we live in a not agricultural societies and have lost the basic connection with the land as a source of survival so we use the wheel of the year to mark the points of the year.

3.      The wheel of the year is made up and is basically a calendar of festival followed by many pagan paths.

We can look at the Sabbat with greater understanding.

We have to put ourselves in the mindset of a person who life depends on the land; the crops grown and harvested would be your only source of food and survival and a source for new crops next year. There would be no popping off to the supermarket to stock up; your whole life would be dependent on the elements and Mother Nature herself for survival.

Working for your own survival is very hard work and when your life depends on the growth and life cycle of crops there are small periods of rest bite before large periods of extra hard work this harder periods are the soil prep before planting – the planting itself – the growing and final the harvesting and returning to beginning of the cycle.

It no wonder then that the agricultural societies used local, regional and national Gods and their mythologies to explain and understand their situations if something was going right you would thank one deity if things where going wrong then you would request assistance from another.

As time moves on and societies get closer together through trade or war commonalities would be seen in spiritual practices and as families and communities intersected spiritual practices where combined creating the a local holiday or festival day.

Some of these holidays and festivals where adopted by whole nations and almost standardised in to national days of celebration some of which are still around today such as the 4 cross quarters of the wheel of the year.

For those festivals that are still around –

Samhain, All Hallow’s Eve, Last/Blood Harvest, Ancestor Night, Feast of the Dead, Nos Galan Gaeaf (Welsh)

Candlemas, Imbolc, Oimelc, Brigit, Brigid’s Day, Bride’s Day, Brigantia, Gŵyl y Canhwyllau (Welsh)

Beltane, Beltaine, May Day, Gŵyl Galan Mai (Welsh)

And Lammas, Lughnasadh 1st Harvest, Bread Harvest, Festival of First Fruits, Gŵyl Galan Awst (Welsh)

Most have lost their original meanings as we have move from an agricultural society to a society that is technologically advanced society where everything from food to sex can be order at a click of a mouse. But we do try to keep to the ideals that we are still somehow connect to nature and the land so we celebrate the 1st harvest which any farmer today will tell you depends on many factors and cant be pinned down to a precise day to start as harvest happen when the fruit or grain is ripe not when the calendar drugs online say it time to harvest.

It does not matter what you call the 1st August whether that be Lammas, Lughnasadh, 1st Harvest, Bread Harvest, Festival of First Fruits, or even Gŵyl Galan Awst (Welsh) just enjoy the day and feast well and make merry.

The popularity of tarot just grows and grows. There are many decks now available some look attractive and interesting, others look deep and mysterious and just a little scary. It is difficult to know how to find out more, and how to get started with a user friendly deck.

“The Tarot Box” is the answer. In one handy package you will find everything you need. The deck is the SharmanCaselli classic, specially created to make things easier for beginners, and its size is convenient to use anywhere. The clipfit layout board fits together in seconds and each side is printed with a card layout. The fivecard horseshoe spread for a specific question, and the sevencard triangle spread for a general life picture.

Experienced tarot tutor, Juliet SharmanBurke, writes the book. She first introduces you to the deck card by card, and then shows you how to make your first reading. And she includes sample readings from her own workshops with tarot students, to show you how interpreting the cards works in practice.

Why does the tarot continue to fascinate us? Juliet is convinced that although the modern world can offer us so much, we still feel a need to learn more about our inner selves. The tarot cards offer a space and place for the imagination, somewhere where imagery and dreams can be explored for divination, for meditation and for therapy.

We all yearn to know if we will find love, security and spiritual meaning in our lives: the tarot can help us find the answers. No wonder the tarot goes from strength to strength. And no wonder you will love “The Tarot Box”.

Mens Traditions

men an tol 150x150 Mens Traditions May be as a response to the women’s tradition, Dianic witchcraft or goddess worship the male tradition focuses on the male aspect of the divine. The aim of the men’s tradition is to help men connect with the male deity and male spirituality.

The horned god is the principle deity although the path does include other archetypal male deities in the search for male orientated wisdom, strength and love.

The men’s tradition is gathering force probably due to the fact that the rolls of men are changing within society.

The men’s tradition is very much a boys club transforming itself from a pagan path in to much more of a tribal society where the focus is less on ritual and more on personal discovery of the newly awakening male spirituality.

At the heart of the male traditions are the myths and traditions of Mithras or the literature of R J ‘Bob’ Stewart. Although strong influences have also come from John Rrowan and Robert Bly which have help to form the Men’s tradition in to a fast moving pagan path it is still a very young path but it fundamental ideas of searching for male spiritual identity away from the idea of the Christian “all powerful god” and the Wiccan concept as “The God as Consult”. Since Alcyone made her nest on the beach, and waves threatened to destroy it, Aeolus restrained his winds and made the waves be calm during seven days in each year, so she could lay her eggs. These became known as the “halcyon days”, when storms never occur. The halcyon became a symbol of tranquillity. (Ovid XI, 410). The name means something like “Queen who wards off (storms)”. Odin (Norse): In some legends, Odin bestowed gifts at Yuletide upon his people, riding a magical flying horse across the sky. This legend may have combined with that of St. Nicholas to create the modern Santa Claus.
