Description: Ēostre or Ostara is as the Venerable Bede said the origin of the word is actually from Eostre, a Germanic goddess of spring. Eostre is a very obscure Goddess, and uniquely Anglo-Saxon Heathen. She is not mentioned at all in the Norse corpus, and there are only fleetingly in the Old English by Bede in De Temporum Rationale. Some scholars have even conjectured that she may not have even been a goddess but rather just the Germanic name for the celebration that took place around the time of Vernal equinox.

The original diagram for this ritual has been lost but if you place the cauldron directly in front of you, the herbs and brewing ingrediance to the left and the cup to the right forming the triangle of the triskalion, once you have placed the tools in position visualiste the energy flow in the patten of the triskelion, before starting the ritual works very well.

Tools:

• Herb(s) for tea
• Container for herb(s)
• Cup(s) and Tea Pot
• Decanter of Pure Spring Water
• Brewing dish with candle
• Scrying Candle
• cauldron

Prepare By: Placing a small table or platform in the center of your working space and arranging the Brewing dish, herbs, cup(s), Tea Pot and spoon on the table. Also place the cauldron with scrying candle within for use during the meditation.  Prior to casting the Circle, light candle and fill the Brewing dish with Spring Water from a decanter. Keep the Brewing Dish covered during the Casting, as I have found this helps the water to heat faster and hotter.

The Blessing of the Herbs

With the tip of your Athame touching the Herbs, intone this blessing:

Thou has grown by favor of the Sun, The Moon, and of the dew. I make this intercession, ye herb: I beseech thee to be of benefit to me and my rite, For thy virtues are unfailing. Thou art the Dew of all the Gods, The Eye of the Sun, The Light of the Moon, The Beauty and Glory of the Sky, The Mystery of Terra. I purify thee so that Whatever is wrought by me with thee may, In all its powers, Have a good and speedy effect with good success. Be purified by my prayer and be powerful!

So mote it be!

When water is hot enough, place the herbs in the Tea Pot and add water from the brewing dish, give it a couple of stirs.

While the tea is steeping, intone this Prayer.

Earth Mother Giver of life Strengthen me during my life-long strife. Teach me Your ways of perfect love, Peace, and wisdom true. Spawn from my purest heart These words to You May this prayer help me to better Myself in word and deed, To a higher plane I shall succeed. Beautiful Light of Goodness Fair Lore of old we both do share A Witch’s brew, I drink to You My love for You, by day, by night In thought and in sight Will my soul learn The meaning of this life again.

Pour out a cup for all present, including one for the Gods, and enjoy.

Sit before the table and meditate on the blessings that the Gods have bestowed upon your life. You may use the scrying candle here to focus upon for your meditation. If the Gods so choose They may give you a Message or Vision through the blessings of the Sight.

You may relax now and finish off the pot. (Note: this rite is not to take the place of The Feast, but is to be used as a time of blessing and communing with the Goddess).

Purpose: The purpose of this working is to pay homage to the Gods and to reflect on Their blessings upon this your life.

Although you should not cast spells on people to change them i see this spell as more of a protection spell that also will help someone become a better person.

As I look through the note in my [wikipedia] Book of Shadows[/wikipedia]  it usage is for:-

Stopping bullies or people that are upsetting you so that you will hopefully become friends or at least come to an understanding.

The Equipment and Ingredients

1 Large glass bowl

1 pinch of sugar

Blossom petal

4 drops of Olive Oil

The Words

Let (insert persons name) be,

Rid of evil

Rid of sin

Rid of jealousy and the hatred within.

Let (insert persons name)

Learn to live and work with other.

Especially me

Go Spirits you are free

May (insert persons name) be guided by nature

Place the blossom on the surface so it floats.

Add the sugar to sweeten the offering.

Visualise / [wikipedia] Meditate[/wikipedia]  or just thing about having a day where no bullying happens

Then take the blossom outside and place on ground then take the water pour the water over the blossom repeating the word one last ending with So Mote It Be.

Adaptations

If you happen to live in a flat place the blossom to one side funnel water into a bottle take the blossom to the park and finish the spell their.

If you cant finds a blossom then take a walk with the intent to find a flower a long the way and the right one will be their even if you have to pay for it.

There are many different herbs that are used by pagans and witches. Plants and herbs have many different meanings and uses and can be confusing to what herbs should be used for which ritual. Here is a basic set of herbs with their correspondences, as with all plants for use in rituals and spell it is advisable to collect your own product rather than buy the where practical if you choose to collect your own herbs and plants it is advisable to buy a good plant identification book so that you don’t get herbs and plants mixed up and end up collecting something dangerous or better still grow your own.

Below is a list of plant commonly used in rituals or spell work -

Agnus Castus Berries - Mystical uses in love and fertility spells and incense.Ideal in incenses for meditation and protection rites. Considered to be an aphrodisiac hence use in love spells.

Used in herbal medicine to reduce PMS symptoms of irritability headaches and cramping and is effective for women suffering from infertility and irregular periods.

Bay Leaves (Laurel) - For Mystical uses burn Bay Leaves as an incense to enhance psychic powers and for purification, exorcism and protection. Place under your pillow as you sleep to bring inspiration and visions in your dreams.

Used in herbal medicine as a tea to soothes stomach aches, relieves aches & pains and assist sleep.

Calendula Petals (Marigold) - Used in spells and charm pouches for bringing Good Luck in Money Matters and especially at Games of Chance. Place in a green cloth and put under your pillow to induce powerful,prophetic lucky number dreams.

Used in herbal medicine to ease skin problems, stings, sunburn and rashes.

Dill Seeds - Dill is used mainly for protection, money and love. Hang in sachets above the front door to protect the home, hang in sachets on a cot to protect the baby, use Dill seeds in money spells. Inhaling the fragrance of Dill seed is believed to cure hiccups. Add a sachet of Dill seeds to the bath to make you irrisistable, for lust inhale the fragrance.

Lavender: This herb is good for providing clarity and vision. It is also a common ingredient in love and fertility spells. It is marketed by aromatherapy companies as a stress reliever and insomnia cure. Used dry or burned as an incense it can aid with divination practices.

Used in love spells and attraction sachets. Hang in sachets with clothes to attract a partner, use sachets with lavender flowers to attract love, burn lavender heads to induce sleep. Scattered around the home, lavender heads induce an atmosphere of peace and serenity.

Used in herbal medicine as a tea to treat headaches and lift deepressive moods

Licorice root: Don’t confuse this herb with the candy of the same name. The flavor you taste in the candy is anise- there is very little actual licorice in there. The root is sweet but not as much as candy. It works well in love spells. It has a slight toxicity but should ingestion should only be avoided completely by those with high blood pressure since it will raise it up higher briefly.

Used in spells and mixes for love and lust and to assure fidelity. Carry a small pouch of Liquorice root attract love. Chewing on a liquorice root is said to make you feel passionate, though does not taste like the liquorice sweets we are use to eating.

In herbal medicine it is used to ease bronchitis, help sooth ulcers & cold sores. It is mildly laxative and may help slow digestion. Liquorice root is a great source of the female hormone oestrogen. Do Not use if you are pregnant.

Lobelia: If you ingest too large of a quantity of the stronger forms of lobelia, it can cause severe nausea. But used wisely it shouldn’t cause any problems. It is good in spells of love and storms. It can also be used as a tobacco substitute even though it has no nicotine in it.

Long pepper: This herb is a warmer but sweeter alternative to peppercorn. It is considered to be an aphrodisiac (even earning a mention in the Kama Sutra) and is accordingly used in sex spells.

Monkshood: This herb is extremely toxic. Avoid contact with the skin and do not ever ingest it. If it comes in contact with your skin and you begin to feel numbness or tingling in your mouth, get to a doctor. Those are the symptoms of monkshood poisoning. The herb is used to honor Hekate and in death or baneful works.

Mugwort: This herb is used for dream work and can thus be placed in or under the pillow, placed in bath water or sipped form a tea to help with slumber.

Myrtle: This herb is used to honor Aphrodite. In spell work it can be used for love or protection.

Nettles: Used as a wash to cleanse and remove negativity, break hexes and jinxes. At night cover your clothes with a dusting of dried nettle leaves, in the morning brush awa, or use in an incense and allow the smoke to cover you to remove jinxes. Can be used to return a curse to its sender or used as a herbal tea to protect from the inside.

Nutmeg: Often found in the spice rack, nutmeg encourages the feminine and can be used to honor the Divine. In spells, it can bring about love, money or luck. It is often used in the Winter Festivals.

Oak Moss: This herb has a forest smell about it but it is well regarded for attracting money. It can be carried with you in an amulet or mixed with other ingredients to form potent incense. Used in mixes and spells for money and wealth. Used as an incense for purification and carrying some will ensure good luck especially financial luck

Orris Root: This plant has a beautiful floral scent similar to violets. It can be used for dream work and divination. Sprinkled around a loved one will ensure they return the sentiment. It can also be used in protection spells. Strong and powerful powder used in spells and mixes to bring good luck in love affairs, romance, marriage and passion. Used in baths and washes for protection.

Patchouli: The oil of this plant is often used as a musky fragrance. It is supposedly an aphrodisiac and works well in love and sex spells. It can also be used in money or protection spells.

Used in spells and mixes for drawing love, money and for lust.Sprinkle some in your purse to attract money. Place some under the mattress to encourage lust in women.

Used in herbal medicine as a wash to ease acne, athlete’s foot, chapped and dry skin, eczema and dandruff.

Periwinkle: Periwinkle is used for love and protection spells. It is so well used in love spells that many countries consider it to be the symbol of everlasting love.

Most of my pagan friends will tell you that me and gardening is not a true match in fact a pagan friend of mine (someone who is now running their own coven) was told that I had spent weeks designing my garden to which he replied why did it take him so long to draw a square and write concrete ‘LOL’.

I always lived in London and gardening was a luxury but since I move out in to the middle of the country I have wanted improve my pagan practices with getting back to ground roots pagan life I could not cope with the “good life” (tv version) of going totally self sufficient but I did want to be able to grow a few herbs for spell and potions and some fruit over the last few years I have not had much success (explains the concrete comment), I have had the dog dig them up, slugs and caterpillars eat them and the frost kill them and the few bit that have survived have been never in time for any ritual or rite.

But this year I have managed to grow stuff that will be ready for the 1^st august it not much I have 1 melon a few raspberries a few black currents and 4 or five broad bean come on don’t laugh I know it not much.

This will be the first year that I will be able to perform a harvest ritual where the harvest will be a physical act, will be able to decorate my altar with something that I have grown and harvested on the day.

As I sit and write my ritual for the 1^st August I am so aware that the physical act of the harvest plays such an important of the day, in previous years my harvest was the things that I was successful at I would metaphorically harvest them and use them as seed to grow more successful. Which in its own way lead me to the understanding that my spiritual needs where becoming less important that working daily life part of the reason I moved to the country. I started to realise that I had become caught up in the city and was losing my connection to nature so about 10 or so years ago I decide that I need to be in Dorset or should buy without a prescription I say the lady herself sent signs that I need to be in Dorset so I moved to Bournemouth which was much like the city and although I had the sea to connect with it still was not quite right, it was only when I move to where I am at present did everything full in to place.

Everything we do in that end up harvested sometimes we receive a bounty other times we end up with something that is rotten and spoilt but no matter what we receive we must accept our part in it creation and accept our responsibilities fairly and with understanding.

I hope that by reading this that you will think of the things you have harvested and work into your ritual something that will help you gain a stronger connection to the life the divine has provided you.

Going through my Book of Shadows this morning I came across this and though I would share I hope JR Grover does not mind but it is only 21 years and I am not sure if it is available anywhere.

I used to have this in my office at work as it gave me confidence in my early days in the craft to come out and be a proud witch

You are politely but firmly requested not to discriminate against our pagan and spiritual heritage.

As pagans, witches and Druids, we have every right to express our views and practices. Our traditions with the fall protection of British and international law.

The last remaining laws prohibiting witchcraft in Great Britain were repealed in 1951.

This was necessary to bring British law in line with the United Nations universal declaration of human rights, which states:

Article 18
Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public Private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance.

Article 19
Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.

Adopted and proclaimed by the Gen assembly of the United Nations on 10 December 1948.

Compared to various Christian persuasion is (a religion of Middle Eastern origin), particularly those of its recent forms of fundamentalists and similar sex often seem ill informed, even ignorant of the original and sacred spiritual heritage of the British Isles. We would encourage them to at least learn about our ways; any scientist will inform them that to criticise with out a reasonable comprehensive grasp of the subject renders the criticism invalid. The blind prejudice frequently expressed against paganism by such people is often the result of such gross ignorance. Here are the two basic areas of information which will dispense with many major misconceptions.

1 Satanism, and the devil
Satanism is an offshoot of that Judaic Christian. the pagan heritages of all nations are the original roots from which the modern religions sprang. These religions usually arose from a significant or, divinely inspired person capable of seeing the armed. Our quaint and beautiful symbolic minutes, ceremonies and deities, allegories the processes of nature and existence, and celebrate the existence of humanity as part of the whole. After all, your existence is a result of the evolutionary nature, despite absurd creationist modern sects born of inward looking religious self-delusion. We are happy to coexist with other spiritual paths, and perfectly willing to discuss their validity of each other as core beliefs and morals and natural supernality.
As inheritors of the pagan knowledge, we conceive of Jesus Christ as a magnificent example of a middle eastern known scientific folk of their 2160 year Piscean age, now ending As we enter the Aquarian age. As starch, we have due respect for this figure, and his true followers who wish to peacefully coexist with other spiritual traditions, but not for the Christian churches with their appalling record of genocide, torture, material acquisition suppression of other spiritual traditions, including those from which they descend, their involvement with fascists and various oppressive governments, their suppression of winning, their coal industry a dark and murky politics, and perhaps above all, their doctrinal denial of every human being is divine right to seek spirituality. Based on reality, not confined by an enforced dogma. Nowadays, we do not live under the tyranny of an enforced belief system. Paganism is currently the fastest growing spiritual cosmology. In this land, at least, and a dogmatic religions are declining as progressing human knowledge about our universe, its origins and ours are no longer censored by religious dogma. This is because the pagan principles are absolutely appropriate in a word, where environmental concerns focus attention on the necessity of looking after this beautiful Earth, and of course, there is no contradiction between the experimental concepts underlying pagan knowledge and the knowledge developed through scientific discovery.

After 2000 years of oppression. We say never again! We feel we have the right to express our freedom with the support of decent people throughout the Wales. If you have come across discrimination against pagans weather, which is truth or others including Third World pagan folk. Please inform the perpetrator that they are in violation of internationally enforceable law against religious discrimination and are liable to arrest and prosecution because the civilised governments of the world regards such prejudices as immoral and unacceptable.

To help hurry along a person’s recovery from an illness, write their name on a human-shaped candle (based on gender). While anointing it with myrrh or mint oil, visualize healing energy in the form of white light, flowing from your fingers into the candle. Recite:

“In the divine name of the Goddess

who breathes life into us all

I consecrate and charge this candle

as a magickal tool for healing.”

Place the charged candle on top of a photograph of the sick person, and then light the wick. As the candle burns down, concentrate on the person, willing them to be healthy, and chant this incantation:

“Magick mend and candle burn,

sickness end; good health return.”

Many Neo-Pagans and Wiccan adopt at least one new name as a sign of the new person that they have become and as a sign of their belief. A neo pagan and Wiccan will normally have at least 3 names their birth or legal name, the public pagan name that is a name used at public meetings and the final name is the private name a name only known to members of the coven or group that they belong to.

The public working name is a name that a person chooses for himself or herself which can just be made up or contains the names of animals or crystals or magickal symbols or runes.

The private name is normally given by the high priestess to a new member this name will contain information that that person must seek out, you are called that name for a reason sometimes to bring humility and understanding other times to inspire greatness.

During the first few years a neo pagan may change the public name till they find a name that truly fits.

I choose my public name “Draco of the Dragonstar” as I have a very close affinity to dragons and their magicks and I wanted to honour the great dragon who has been my guide for many decades now. Although I do shorten it to draco in letters and emails many people think that my name comes from Harry Potter.

My Private name was given to me and I was a little disappointed that it was not something big and proud like Raven Hunter Hawk but as I sort out my name if found it fits me like a glove.

So how do you start to pick your own pagan name?

Well you can start with the archetypal gods and goddess names choose a deity whose strengths and attributes you would like to embody although I would research any deity you may wish to be called by as you will assume some of their traits positive and negative.

You could also choose mythical beasts or cultural hero as part of the name as well as animals precious stones or even a particular attribute you wish to embody.

If you having difficulties finding a name there are a few techniques such as meditation and asking the divine directly or even forms of divination such as (Tarot, Runes, Ouji Board, Lots, *Numerology and your power numbers, I-Ching) no matter how you find your name it has to be right for you their no wrong name.

Only perform this ritual if you’re in a stable emotional state of mind, as this ritual is design to invoke personal discoveries some of which can be painful so having someone to be with you after ritual can help.

Timing.

Waning moon to black moon (note the closer to the black moon the stronger the results so start with baby steps start just after full moon and work towards a black moon do not perform day after day unless you have done some practice I could take a year or mores practice before you can do the whole waning moon).

Deity

This requires one of the dark deities those that deal with the realms of the dead, it is advisable to choose one you are familiar with or one of your own gender.

Preparation

Take a look at your life and you will see that you repeat the same mistake over and over again, it could be with relationships or work life you will need to question your self why doe relationships fail or why do I never get promoted once you have found the question you are ready to start

Cleansing

As the door opens you can make out a small boat on the banks of a river it is dark as you and the deity step in to the boat the boat moves in to the current and you start to travel on the river you look behind you and you can see the candle in the door way getting further away.

Your guide explains that you’re travelling to the underworld as the boat travels deeper you notice that the river is getting thicker and blacker and just off in the distance you can make out a large jetty and a very large house. In no time at all you find yourself along side the jetty your guide offers standing on the jetty offering you a hand to get out of the boat.

Your guide leads you up the path towards the house; the house has so many windows and you marvel at its size, once your at the door your guide warns you of what you will find inside, he warns you that although you can view and feel events they can not harm you

You guide will ask you if you are ready to face your fears if you are not ready you will be returned to the boat and the doorway and you will leave. If you stay, the door will open and you step through.

Inside you find a large hall with many doors you are asked to walk freely around the house and if you feel a door calling to you open it step through and you will find yourself in a part of your past you will be able to rewind, stop and ask yourself questions such has why did you say that what are you feeling you will get to observe your actions and feelings as an outsider seeing ever action as if it was a movie of your life. Once you have got all you can from this room find another door to which to walk through, you may enter another event in your life to which you do the same ask questions and view or you may find yourself back in the boat travelling back to the doorway (ant time you want to leave think boat and open a door and you will find yourself back in the boat) once their step through and prepare yourself for next step.

Next step

A path working sometimes called a path walking is a guided meditation in which the subject is guided through a journey in an attempt to gain hidden knowledge. Path workings are normally done in groups lead by a high priest/ess, elder or an experience member of the group.

A session will normally start with members getting comfortable either sitting or laying (although lying down can encourage sleep – their will always be one that drops off). The leader will then get everyone to breath rhythmical normally in through nose the out through mouth in a slow circular motion. The subjects are asked to visualize a scene in most cases the will something that stairs or a lift the subject are asked to descend either by walking down the stairs or watching the floor numbers descend, this is done to deepen the meditative state.

Most pagan path workings / guided meditations are designed to teach subjects are given great details about surrounding and the journey. At the completion of journey the subject will find themselves in a sacred place, room, etc where they are shown a table, altar or stone and they are asked to look at it ad see what is on it. The leader at this stage will give no information on what they are looking at allowing the subject to connect to their own inner guide who will show them what they need once the subject has had enough time to find out what they need the elder will lead them back along the path reinforcing the journey in the subjects mind so they can return alone or show others the journey.

In shamanic traditions path working are created to teach the training shaman the journey to desired spirits and gods and the correct ways to climb the world tree.

Path working and guided meditations can be used not just for spiritual development but have been used to help people quit an addiction or improve the way they see themselves.

Pathworking has been around since the dawn of time in the form of telling stories to relay information ancient hunter world regal their victories in great detail unknowing or not passing on the techniques to the next generation. Path working in modern day neo pagan paths are used in much the same way elders and leader who have had profound spiritual enlightenment will condense their journey into a guided experience.

Creating your own path working

When I create a path working I start at the end what is the out come going to be, then I work how do I get there is it an easy or hard journey, the harder the journey the greater reward.

I will often draw a map mark the signs along the path I will then travel the path several time using meditation and visualisation noting anything new or not in the correct place. Once I am happy that it correct the goal is correct I will write it up in to a formal pathworking.

When giving a pathworking session I would always read the formal version as a script to keep its integrate although if I am receiving a pathworking from someone else due to the way that pathworking are design to be remembered and retraced I would practice their pathworking until it felt correct and everything is in place then write it up making mine slightly different from original.

Example of a pathworking

(Start with relaxing and breathing)

Visualise your self standing at the top of a hill next to a large oak tree as you walk around the tree you can fill your self getting smaller and smaller and continue to get smaller and smaller, and smaller and smaller till you’re the size of a mouse as you continue to walk around you notice a door something you would never of noticed unless you where the size of a mouse you walk over to the door and it opens welcoming you step inside.

As you step through the door you find yourself in a very large room with pillars down the left and right side the pillars must be at least 100ft high the ceiling is purest white the wall in front of you seems very far away and you can just make out the shape of a statue. You start to walk towards the statue as you get closer it begins to look familiar your trying to recollect where you have seen it before. The closer you get the more the statue seems to become more and more familiar you now can work out it gender its flowing robes seem to be moving but from this distance you can see the full features and can see that it’s a statue of the divine. As you get closer you can see that this statue is smiling and you stand in wonder of the divine. The statue smile deeper as speaks your name (you are not afraid) you replied yes “ you have questions “ the statue says you ask your question and hear the answers, (the subject is left for a few minutes before continuing).

You thank the divine for their insights an turn around walk back to the door noting the pillars and floor once outside the door you walk in the opposite direction around the tree until you are back to your normal size then begin to dissolve the hill as you return your focus to your breath once your focus is on your breath open your eyes and ground yourself.
