Ludd as an official of the Alka Antam in Cambridgeshire, England, Order of Baphomet (OOB) has compiled the basic introductory rites for initiation through the third degree of his Order. This manual is written with the premise, “If you tend to focus and draw upon the light forces of nature and the universe, then strictly speaking you have no place in the Baphomet Rule.” As that indicates this is dealing with Dark Arts. There is a structure and hierarchy that is well defined and used throughout the detailed rituals written here.

The use of the term “pagan” is a little misleading to a non-pagan, since this is about a specific group that is pagan in the general sense but not representative of all pagans. Ludd explains the relationships between the basic elements, fire, water, air, and earth and then elaborates with the interactions with “Gallas” which are spirit beings more commonly referred to as demons in other groups.

Ludd’s explanations of the history of the Order he belongs to is illuminating for both practitioners and students of religion. While that would suffice for many he continues by covering the steps to advance within this Order. Throughout the terms Order, craft and lodge are almost interchangeable, referring to the structure and practice of OOB. All these details are clear and precise with sufficient explanation for anyone to use the rites in practice. Since this is a spell book or ritual manual, the structure is in dialog form with descriptions or peripheral information interspersed.

There is a glaring inconsistency that could cause a reader a few problems. Early on Ludd claims that no one should reveal these secret rites to anyone else; then he promptly fills the remainder of the book with details about those rites. Another is that he initially harangues persons claiming to understand this without the sanction of the OOB then proceeds to state that these should be adapted to the individual’s and group’s needs.

How can a book go wrong with a resounding introduction by blogger Publius Redux? He claims this book is a novel analysis of the undercurrent of urgency and irrationality characteristic of climate doomsayers’ prophecy and that it explains the haunting familiarity of the preaching and proselytizing we have endured from the climate change fearmongers.

Publius is introducing The Green Dragon by Dr. James Wanliss, a book about how environmentalism is committed to the reconstruction of a pagan world order and rejection of Christian spirituality.The author argues that the environmental movement is a religion with a vision of sin and repentance, heaven and hell. It even has a special vocabulary, with words like sustainability and carbon neutral. He says its saints are Al Gore and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

That would certainly add to Al Gore’s list of accomplishments, Vice President, acclaimed movie director, Nobel Prize Winner, now possibly a Saint. I’m not sure how you can Canonize the entire IPCC, or Al Gore while he is living, but reality is apparently not a problem here.

Dr. Wanliss is upset by the strength of the Christian environmental movement, which is based upon good stewardship. He blames the National Council of Churches as both professing Protestants and Roman Catholics bear a burden of guilt for the current political mess we are in with the global warming and other hysterias. He thinks that if the church had not turned from the gospel of Jesus Christ, it is unlikely the Green Dragon would have been able to so deeply sink its fangs into our lives.

Perhaps that’s a bit dramatic, but he also claims there has been, in past decades, a cosmic shift towards a social climate that begins to favor the environment – polar bears, trees, and bugs – over human beings. Well, where would we be without the bears, trees, environment, and umm bugs?

He also thinks that environmentalists have infiltrated Christian higher education by careful placement of teachers and teaching materials on environmental activism in schools associated with the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities. He says that little by little, the wolves try to douse Christian resistance and lead sheep by troubled waters to accept the inevitability of a divine environmental movement to synthesize a Christian environmentalism that can succeed only by exorcising truth, and ultimately, by expelling Christianity.

It’s hard to argue with that. Instead, let’s try to imagine the reception Dr. Wanliss, Pablius, prescription medicine and their followers may get on Judgment Day, when they stand before the Pearly Gates.

St. Peter: Why are all of you here?

Dr. Wanliss: We exposed the Global Warmists as pagans. We have saved Christianity from their influence. We’re here to claim our rightful place in heaven.

St. Peter,looking into a large black book: Hmmm. It says under Dr. James Wanliss – Poor stewardship, led a movement whose followers damaged the Earth that God hath given man.

Dr. Wanliss, looking nervous: We didn’t know it would turn out that way. Pollution is invisible – the changes to the Earth were so small at first – and we thought CO2 was only a plant food.

St. Peter: We gave you Science so you would understand those things. Didn’t you study it?

Dr. Wanliss: You know how those Global Warming scientists are, always going around casting doubt on our beliefs. You can’t be a Global Warmist scientist and be a Christian.

St. Peter, peering over his glasses: I don’t know. We’ve let a lot of them into Heaven. Who are you to judge them? And, he thundered, God is a little upset about that damage to the Earth.

Dr. Wanliss, looking distraught: Are you going to send us to, to…?

St Peter: No, no. That’s not the punishment for poor stewardship. We’re going to send you back to Earth so you can clean up the mess you helped make of it.

Dr. Wanliss: But, but.. it’s hot down there and it’s certainly not a pleasant place to live anymore. How would we know what to do?

St Peter, with a dismissive gesture: Some of you were scientists. Maybe you’ll get it right next time. We’ll check on you in 50 years. Poof!

The [wikipedia]Stabenfeldt publishing house[/wikipedia] has decided it will not publish the Sweep series of books in Finland, Sweden, and Norway, following an outcry over content related to the because it contains content that relates to the Wicca religion.

The Books, which are fantasy in nature, were to have been targeted at children aged 9 to 13 in Finland, Norway, and Sweden.  The printers have all ready received the first part.

 [wikipedia]Leena Rauhala[/wikipedia] a MP for Christian Democratic Party submitted a written question to the government on Friday, stating the view that the books should not be published in Finland.

Rauhala also mentioned that the content of the book, including drug use, nudity, smoking, alcohol, and strong language.

The publisher has removed the references to tobacco and alcohol, as well as the strongest language from the translation. As for drug use, the publisher said that the books portrayed illegal drugs in a negative light.

The Wicca religion proved to be the deciding factor in the matter.

 “We do not want to promote any individual religion or political ideology in the books that we target toward children”, says the publisher’s CEO [wikipedia]Jens Otto Hansen[/wikipedia].

He said that the publisher was not familiar with [wikipedia]Wicca[/wikipedia].

 “I only learned on Monday morning that such a thing as Wicca exists.”

Hansen sees the case as an “industrial accident” for the publisher.

“Our own routines have failed in this. We have acted too quickly.”

Hansen himself learned about the [wikipedia]Wiccan[/wikipedia] content only on Monday, but admits that already last week one of the company’s employees had raised the issue of the books’ content.

 “Clearly one of our employees has raised the issue outside our company as well. It is not pleasant for our matters to come into the public eye in this manner.”

Hansen does not agree with Ms Rauhala point of but has withdrawing the book from the publishers

 “An enthusiastic politician has latched on to this and tried to turn it into something different. I cannot share her views in any way.”

 Hansen has made it very clear that he made the decision of his own back

 “We are not forced by those who want to protect their own beliefs any more by those who want to advance freedom of expression. We decide ourselves what kinds of products to produce.”

There is historical information and timelines on each major religion. In addition to key principles and beliefs there are profiles of the primary leaders. New groups are explored and there are opinions and commentary on controversial issues. The pictures may not be necessary but they break up the text and make the book more readable. There’s a vast amount of information but glossaries and an index simplify usage. The recommended reading is helpful if you want to investigate further.
 
I believe this is a must have for students and teachers of religion but the easy to read format makes it a good resource for a layperson like myself. It certainly helped me to accomplish my goal of understanding people of other faiths and what they believe. Anyone with a curiosity and desire to be enlightened will benefit from reading this book. My copy has already been borrowed by a friend and I expect I won’t see it back for awhile.
