Ritual purification is not a new thing but someone somewhere can prove it all began way back when by pagans. But many religions have dedicated purification rituals including Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Bahá’í Faith, Hinduism, Shinto, Buddhism, Indigenous American religions, Kalash (polytheists in the mountains of Pakistan), some of which are just general while others relate to different aspects of life.
There are rituals for birth and birthing death and dying as well as rituals for sex (before and after), sickness, and menstruation and of course there are purification rituals for contacting the divine whether that be prayer or formal ritual.
There are even purification ritual that have invaded normal life such as wash hand before eating or after going to the toilet now today we know that these minor acts of purification have health benefits but where originally done to be seen pure in the eyes of the divine a sign of respect.
Now a day cleaning has become a common activity in most homes, now we all rush around with the duster and Hoover if we know that some one is turning up this is ritual purification at it most basic. The act of cleaning removes unwanted items from your home (if only the visible parts lol) but we all get that spring cleaning bug at least once a year not always at spring where we do the big clean we move furniture and clean the tops of paintings and door frames no where is let unclean.
For many pagans the act of cleaning is just cleaning myself included it has no special purpose apart from to make the home look tidy and smell nice. While at the same time we (i) take ritual cleaning / Purification very seriously. For me there are Four major forms of purification The House / Home, The Sacred Space, The Body And Mind.
The Mind and Body must be pure before doing any other form of purification, The act of cleaning the body and meditating on the purpose before embarking on your task is important. It is not unheard of taking several purification rituals during very heavy working. For example if you have a very important ritual you may need to do an extra big cleaning of the home before creating the sacred space so you would meditate on cleaning home bath or shower clean then repeat the meditation focusing on the ritual ahead.
Purifying the body also has extremes the simple form of washing may be sufficient enough for most workings but sometimes you need deeper purification so you may fast to purify the insides as well.
The basic form of personal purification is washing so run a deep bath (for those that don’t have baths and have showers I cover in a mo) add oils (choice of oils is left to individual although some say use sea salt) to the water, rose petals burn incense I always use some thing I really like and slowly wash your body every inch of it while focusing on cleaning your body. For those that have showers it can be hard to gain that inner sense of peace that a bath creates I have been known to use a paddling pool on occasion but in most cases I will take a few herbs fresh when possible and place in a cloth and tie into a bag I will always include herbs know for their cleaning properties such as Angelica Root, Bay Leaves (Laurel),etc I then use the bag as a cloth to wash body with adding some soft music helps create the state of mind.
For purifying a home or sacred space there are a number of different ways to do it,
Smudging
With smudging, you can use sage, sweetgrass, or other herbs. You can also use incense, if you like. The purpose of smudging is to use smoke to carry negative energy out of the area. When you light sage or sweetgrass, allow it to flame for a moment and then blow out the flame. This will leave you with a burning herb bundle, which will create smoke.
As you walk room to room you would chant – (use this for all cleansings of space or create your own.)
“Negativity that invades my sacred place
I banish you away with the light of my grace
you have no hold or power here
For I stand and face you with no fear
be gone forever, for this I will say
this is my sacred place and you will obey”
Asperging
Asperging means using liquid — the power of water — to purify the area. Although sprinkling consecrated water around the perimeter of the space is common, you can also asperge with milk, wine, or either of these blended with honey.
Now to asperge you will need 3 basic items the liquid, a container and something to sprinkle the liquid the container should be class or pure metal and you can use anything your finger, bunch of flower or herbs, feathers or a mixure of flowers and feathers and herbs .
The best liquid to use is one that is made from pure water with pure sea salt added is Wiccan holy water although you can create an infusion of herbs such as Angelica Root, Bay Leaves (Laurel),etc and exorcise and charge in the same way as holy water
Making Wiccan Holy Water
Fill a small bowl or glass with water. Hold your hands over it and say:
“I exorcise thee, oh creature of water,
of all negativity both seen and unseen,
and bless thee in the name of the spirit.”
Imagine a small blue-white light filling the water. Take your time. Hold your hand amount of salt and say:
“I exorcise thee oh creature of salt
Of all negativity both seen and unseen
and bless thee in the name of the spirit.”
Envision the same blue-white light covering the salt. Add three pinches of salt to the water stir three times. Hold the bowl/glass at eye level with both hands and say:
“I cleanse and consecrate this water in the name of spirit,
May this liquid enhance and purify all that it touches.
So mote it be!”
Sweeping
Typically, the broom is associated with cleaning and purification. You can use a broom or besom to go around the edges of the space, sweeping negativity away as you goes. It’s a good idea to start and finish near a door, so that negative energy can literally be swept outside. You should sweep east to west following the path of the sun
Salt
Salt has been used for purification for thousands of years. Use a bowl of sea salt, sprinkled around the area, to cleanse the space and make it sacred.
Fire
In many cultures, fire is used to ritually purify and cleanse a space. You can do this by lighting a candle and walking the area, or sprinkling cooled ashes around the perimeter (although this can be messy to clean up if you’re inside!).
Below are a couple of spells / ritual which I have use in the past although creating your own will make in much more effective and personal
A basic spell used in home purification is
Items you will need
1 table spoon pine needles
1 table spoon juniper
1 table spoon cedar
Make sure all ingredients are completely dry.
Grind ingredients together and burn on self-igniting charcoal or on open fire. You can either leave to burn in fireplace or on charcoal (if using charcoal you can move clockwise around room or home) as it burns chant-
Spirits of the corners,
Winds of the quarters,
You who stand watching,
And you who hear my voice,
Guard well my home tonight
Cleansing Spell for a Home
Take a large bowl of salt and sprinkle a pinch or two over the exterior doorways and windowsills of your home. Make certain you get each and every one.
Choose the room that has the strongest negative feel to it. Light a white candle. In a large fire proof bowl combine the following:
1 tablespoon powdered garlic,1 tablespoon peppermint, 1 tablespoon ground clove, 1 tablespoon dried/powdered thistle, handful or two of sweetgrass, sage or dried oak leaves
Carefully light the mixture so that it smoulders, giving off an aromatic smoke. Leaving the candle lit, carry the bowl in to each room and repeat the following:
In the name of the Eternal Lady and Lord I bid thee part.
I consecrate and clear this space.
Let nothing but joy linger here.
When you have done each room, return to the first, set the bowl beside the candle and wait for the remaining mixture to burn out. Take the ash outside and sprinkle it over the grass/flowerbed/etc, thereby returning it to the Mother.
