Where Magick come to life

Rowan Berry Protection Charm

mountain ash tree or rowan tree sorbus aucuparia Rowan Berry Protection CharmThe rowan tree or mountain ash has always been a popular tree for witches and druids and the Celts.

Know for the it healing properties, Rowan berries are a laxative, and can also be used for sore throats, inflamed tonsils, hoarseness, even diarrhoea. A decoction from the bark is used as an astringent. as well as for its nutritional properties berries provide vitamins A and C, carotin, pectin and essential oil, and stimulate the immune system.

The rowan makes great protection charms one I use myself is made from silver wire and 18 berries although size can be increased by multiples of (3) 9 (18, 27, 36 etc).

Thread the berries on the wire and create a circle by tying the two ends together and triming.

Now empower this charm using Galdor http://www.cybercauldron.co.uk/galdor-taufe or you own form of empowering an objects to life.

Now hang above the front and back door and say this chant on the full moon.

When the moon is round and bright,
Mark this as your magick night,
Take your berries in their ring,
These words of magick gently sing.

Rowan berry grant to me,
Protection of the Rowan tree,
As you hang above my door,
Keep all from harm for evermore

By all the power of the Three,
As you will, So Mote It Be

This Charm makes the perfect house-warming gift but is a very powerful warding charm.

Smudging How to do it – how not to do it

smudge 300x289 Smudging How to do it how not to do itI came across a very interesting article from “Shaman’s Drum” which was reprinted for Vision Quest Bookstore. I will attempt to convey the gist of it, along with my views, as a student of the Ways of the Teneh, about it. Smudging is a way of using the smoke from burning herbs as a way to cleanse the body, an object, or a given area of negative influences. I myself use smudging to “cleanse” crystals before using them in jewelry projects I may do, and for protecting my home from some recent “bad vibe”-producing events. (landlord troubles!) I imagine that the skillful use of the proper herbs could help in warding and banishing ceremonies as well, if used properly and with reverence. The three most used plant material for smudging are sage of all types, cedar and sweetgrass.

Sage

There are two major genii and several varieties of each genus of Sage that are used for smudging. Salvia, or the herb sage used for cooking, comes in two major varieties: S. officinalis, commonly known as Garden Sage, and S. apiana, commonly known as White Sage. Salvia varieties have long been acknowledged as healing herbs, reflected in the fact that its genus name comes from the Latin root word salvare, which is the verb “to heal” or “to save.” Artemisia is the genus commonly considered “Sagebrush”, and is more common in the wilds out here in California. There are two major varieties to the Artemisia genus: A. californica or Common Sagebrush, and A. vulgaris or Mugwort. There are many other varieties of both Salvia and Artemisia, and all are effective in smudging. Sage is burned in smudging ceremonies to drive out evil spirits, negative thoughts and feelings, and to keep Gan’n (negative entities) away from areas where ceremonials take place. In the Plains Sweatlodge, the floor of the structure is strewn with sage leaves for the participants to rub on their bodies during the sweat. Sage is also used in keeping sacred objects like pipes or Peyote wands safe from negative influence. In the Sioux nation, the Sacred Pipe is kept in a bundle with sage boughs. I would think special crystals could be so protected this way as well.

Cedar

True cedar is of the Thuja and Libocedrus genii. Some Junipers (Juniperus genus) are also called “cedar”, thus complicating things some. Some Juniper varieties are cleansing herbs, especially J. monosperma, or Desert White Cedar. But for smudging, the best is Western Red Cedar (Thuja occidentalis) and California Incense Cedar (Libocedrus descurrens). Cedar is burnt while praying to the Great Spirit (Usen’, the Source — also known to Plains nations as Wakan Tanka) in meditation, and also to bless a house before moving in as is the tradition in the Northwest and Western Canada. It works both as a purifier and as a way to attract good energy in your direction. It is usually available in herb stores in chipped form, which must be sprinkled over a charcoal in a brazier. I like a piece of charcoaled mesquite for this purpose, rather than the commercial charcoal cake.

Sweetgrass

Very important to the Sioux and Cherokee nations, its botanical name is Hierochloë odorata. In these tribes, the sweetgrass is braided like hair braids. It could be burnt by lighting the end of it, or (more economically) by shaving little bits of it onto charcoal in a brazier. Again, use charcoaled Mesquite (I believe it comes packaged for barbecue use under the brand name “Red Arrow”) to burn it, not pressed charcoal tablets. Sweetgrass is burnt after smudging with sage, to welcome in good influences after the bad had been driven out. Sweetgrass is very rare today, and traditional Plains people have been attempting to protect the last of it. Myself, I believe that Cedar, which is not endangered, can safely be used this way. Also Piñon pine needles (used more frequently by the Southwest Teneh, like the Navajo and Apache as well as the Pueblo people and the Zuni) and Copal (used by the Yaqui and in ancient times by the Azteca and the Maya) have similar effect. The three mentioned here are readily available either through gathering yourself or, in the case of copal resin, from any good herb shop.

Using Smudging

Burn clippings of the herb in a brazier… not a shell as some “new age” shamanic circles do… it is an insult to White Painted Woman (The Goddess) to do this, especially with the abalone shell which is especially sacred to Her. If the herb is bundled in a “wand”, you can also light the end of the wand that isn’t woody and use that. I like the latter way. Direct the smoke with your hands or with a Peyote (feather) wand over the person or thing you wish to smudge. If you can see auras, look for discoloured places in the aura and direct the healing smoke towards those places on the patient’s body. For cleansing a house, first offer cedar smoke to the four directions outside the house. Then, take a sage bough and go throughout the inside of the house, making sure the smoke penetrates every nook and cranny of the house. It might help also, if you have a power animal, to visualize your animal doing these things, to also dance your animal, and if you have a power song, to sing that too. Then finally, run through the house with a white candle that is well protected, to “light up” the house. Careful not to burn it down when you do it!!!

Final Thoughts

Smudging should be done with care, with reverence, and in an attitude of LOVE. Show your respect and honour to the plants that Usen’ has given us for our healing, and they will return the favour by keeping us well and free from disease and negative energy. Aloe Vera plants, though not to be burnt, are good for the cleansing angle as well. Keep one or more potted Aloe Veras in the house (modern varieties are too tender to plant in anything but full shade outside) in organic (wood or ceramic, never plastic or metal) pots. To honour the plant when you transplant it, sprinkle the roots with corn meal and smudge it with cedar once it is transplanted. The spirit of Aloe Vera is a good protective spirit, and if you burn yourself, can also be used to heal your skin. Be sure to ask the plant’s permission before cutting part of the leaf off for the healing juice. If you don’t, the protective power of the plant will cease, and you will be left with but an inert houseplant… and perhaps some bad karma to boot.

Hi-dicho, it is finished…. ENJU!

Grannies Flu Remedies

granny smoking 227x300 Grannies Flu RemediesAs I sit here with a running nose and a banging head my mind turns to days past when granny would make her lemon drink and make me stand in the road where tarmacking was going on as she said the fumes would clear my chest.

Now over the years I have never been one to take chemical remedies unless I really have to and always seem to full back on grandma drink.

Now this is a very simple drink to make but I have made adjustments adding my own special twists but the basic is as follows-

Ingredince

4 large lemons

8 tsp brown sugar

¼ tsp of Coleman’s English mustard powder (don’t use pre mixed mustard if cant find use adaptation)

2 tbsp of clear honey

Large pan of water

Extra water to top up

Recipe

Place the lemons in a bowl and cover with boiling water then remove wipe and slice in to thin disc and place in saucepan cover with just enough cold water so that all of the lemon is submerged.

Boil until reduce by half add honey and mustard and sugar stir top up original level and bring to the boil once more stirring to insure that it does not burn once the fluid had reduced by half again top pan up to ¾ full and bring back to boil then simmer for a few mins and pour into a cup and drink. And turn off heat

Keep drink the liquid throughout the day you can always top up pan with more water if necessary remembering to reheat before drinking.

Some of the adaptations I have used are

To replace mustard powder use chilli powder or fresh chillies the hotter the better.

I have also added herbal teabags to brew including feverfew and camomile to add an extra dimension.

Other remedies I can remember was her cough juice not very pleasant but effective if there was no tar macking going on.

She would take a large Spanish onion slice in half place on a plate of sugar and cover in cling film and place in fridge the next day all the liquid that had come from onion and mixed with sugar would be drunk and the remaining sugar would be mixed with warm water and drunk.

But my favourite is probably the most simple and was used to get a good nights sleep was a glass of warm milk with a shot of whiskey

NB these are old family remedies and are not to be used as cures and should not be giving to anyone as a prescribed medicine if you are unwell you should seek your doctors advice.

Ritual purification

smudge 150x150 Ritual purificationRitual purification is not a new thing but someone somewhere can prove it all began way back when by pagans. But many religions have dedicated purification rituals including Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Bahá’í Faith, Hinduism, Shinto, Buddhism, Indigenous American religions, Kalash (polytheists in the mountains of Pakistan), some of which are just general while others relate to different aspects of life.

There are rituals for birth and birthing death and dying as well as rituals for sex (before and after), sickness, and menstruation and of course there are purification rituals for contacting the divine whether that be prayer or formal ritual.

There are even purification ritual that have invaded normal life such as wash hand before eating or after going to the toilet now today we know that these minor acts of purification have health benefits but where originally done to be seen pure in the eyes of the divine a sign of respect.

Now a day cleaning has become a common activity in most homes, now we all rush around with the duster and Hoover if we know that some one is turning up this is ritual purification at it most basic. The act of cleaning removes unwanted items from your home (if only the visible parts lol) but we all get that spring cleaning bug at least once a year not always at spring where we do the big clean we move furniture and clean the tops of paintings and door frames no where is let unclean.

For many pagans the act of cleaning is just cleaning myself included it has no special purpose apart from to make the home look tidy and smell nice. While at the same time we (i) take ritual cleaning / Purification very seriously. For me there are Four major forms of purification The House / Home, The Sacred Space, The Body And Mind.

The Mind and Body must be pure before doing any other form of purification, The act of cleaning the body and meditating on the purpose before embarking on your task is important. It is not unheard of taking several purification rituals during very heavy working. For example if you have a very important ritual you may need to do an extra big cleaning of the home before creating the sacred space so you would meditate on cleaning home bath or shower clean then repeat the meditation focusing on the ritual ahead.

Purifying the body also has extremes the simple form of washing may be sufficient enough for most workings but sometimes you need deeper purification so you may fast to purify the insides as well.

The basic form of personal purification is washing so run a deep bath (for those that don’t have baths and have showers I cover in a mo) add oils (choice of oils is left to individual although some say use sea salt) to the water, rose petals burn incense I always use some thing I really like and slowly wash your body every inch of it while focusing on cleaning your body. For those that have showers it can be hard to gain that inner sense of peace that a bath creates I have been known to use a paddling pool on occasion but in most cases I will take a few herbs fresh when possible and place in a cloth and tie into a bag I will always include herbs know for their cleaning properties such as Angelica Root, Bay Leaves (Laurel),etc I then use the bag as a cloth to wash body with adding some soft music helps create the state of mind.

For purifying a home or sacred space there are a number of different ways to do it,

Smudging

With smudging, you can use sage, sweetgrass, or other herbs. You can also use incense, if you like. The purpose of smudging is to use smoke to carry negative energy out of the area. When you light sage or sweetgrass, allow it to flame for a moment and then blow out the flame. This will leave you with a burning herb bundle, which will create smoke.

As you walk room to room you would chant – (use this for all cleansings of space or create your own.)

“Negativity that invades my sacred place
I banish you away with the light of my grace
you have no hold or power here
For I stand and face you with no fear
be gone forever, for this I will say
this is my sacred place and you will obey”

Asperging

Asperging means using liquid — the power of water — to purify the area. Although sprinkling consecrated water around the perimeter of the space is common, you can also asperge with milk, wine, or either of these blended with honey.

Now to asperge you will need 3 basic items the liquid, a container and something to sprinkle the liquid the container should be class or pure metal and you can use anything  your finger, bunch of flower or herbs, feathers or a mixure of flowers and feathers and herbs .

The best liquid to use is one that is made from pure water with pure sea salt added is Wiccan holy water although you can create an infusion of herbs such as Angelica Root, Bay Leaves (Laurel),etc and exorcise and charge in the same way as holy water

Making Wiccan Holy Water

Fill a small bowl or glass with water. Hold your hands over it and say:
“I exorcise thee, oh creature of water,
of all negativity both seen and unseen,
and bless thee in the name of the spirit.”
Imagine a small blue-white light filling the water. Take your time. Hold your hand amount of salt and say:
“I exorcise thee oh creature of salt
Of all negativity both seen and unseen
and bless thee in the name of the spirit.”
Envision the same blue-white light covering the salt. Add three pinches of salt to the water stir three times. Hold the bowl/glass at eye level with both hands and say:
“I cleanse and consecrate this water in the name of spirit,
May this liquid enhance and purify all that it touches.
So mote it be!”

Sweeping

Typically, the broom is associated with cleaning and purification. You can use a broom or besom to go around the edges of the space, sweeping negativity away as you goes. It’s a good idea to start and finish near a door, so that negative energy can literally be swept outside. You should sweep east to west following the path of the sun

Salt

Salt has been used for purification for thousands of years. Use a bowl of sea salt, sprinkled around the area, to cleanse the space and make it sacred.

Fire

In many cultures, fire is used to ritually purify and cleanse a space. You can do this by lighting a candle and walking the area, or sprinkling cooled ashes around the perimeter (although this can be messy to clean up if you’re inside!).

Below are a couple of spells / ritual which I have use in the past although creating your own will make in much more effective and personal

A basic spell used in home purification is

Items you will need

1 table spoon pine needles
1 table spoon juniper
1 table spoon cedar

Make sure all ingredients are completely dry.

Grind ingredients together and burn on self-igniting charcoal or on open fire. You can either leave to burn in fireplace or on charcoal (if using charcoal you can move clockwise around room or home) as it burns chant-

Spirits of the corners,
Winds of the quarters,
You who stand watching,
And you who hear my voice,
Guard well my home tonight

Cleansing Spell for a Home

Take a large bowl of salt and sprinkle a pinch or two over the exterior doorways and windowsills of your home. Make certain you get each and every one.

Choose the room that has the strongest negative feel to it. Light a white candle. In a large fire proof bowl combine the following:

1 tablespoon powdered garlic,1 tablespoon peppermint, 1 tablespoon ground clove, 1 tablespoon dried/powdered thistle, handful or two of sweetgrass, sage or dried oak leaves

Carefully light the mixture so that it smoulders, giving off an aromatic smoke. Leaving the candle lit, carry the bowl in to each room and repeat the following:

In the name of the Eternal Lady and Lord I bid thee part.
I consecrate and clear this space.
Let nothing but joy linger here.

When you have done each room, return to the first, set the bowl beside the candle and wait for the remaining mixture to burn out. Take the ash outside and sprinkle it over the grass/flowerbed/etc, thereby returning it to the Mother.
