Neo Paganism a history

pagan20pride pagan20pride

Paganism is really an umbrella term, which covers many paths and traditions and often used in historical context, referring to Greco-Roman polytheism as well as the polytheistic traditions of Europe before Christianisation. The term neopaganism is used to describe pagan paths, which have a strong link to magick, which seemed to emerge during the later part of the 1800’s and the early 1900’s with the most famous of these being Wicca. But historical data shows that neopaganism was beginning to form as early as the renaissance (Florence 14th to the 17th century) were  the interest in science and magick was at its highest point. With the rise in scientific developments and understanding which was feared by the church and more times or not would cause scientist to face charges of heresy and recant their findings. During this time of scientific discovery and religious upheaval new spiritual ideas formed some using ancient pagan influences, others based on their understanding of science and how the universe worked to form understandings of the divine others giving up on the God, and purely relying on the self as a moral compass such as Humanism. During the Renaissance, and the reintroduction of Classicism, which gave rise to an interest in Greco-Roman polytheism and Greco-Roman magick, which was practiced along side Renaissance magick helped to revive the philosophy of the pagan. It is when we reach the Romantics (18th Century) that they re-discovery of Old Gaelic and Old Norse literature and poetry, which helped provide more about the pagan past of

The Wheel Of The Year

wheel_of_the_year wheel_of_the_year

The Wheel of the year is basically a calendar of the 8 festivals called Sabbats celebrated by Wiccan’s and some other pagan paths. The wheel looks like a cartwheel with 8 spokes marking the sections of the year. The wheel is in 2 sections the first is the Quarters know as “the lesser Sabbats” or “quarter days”, these quarters mark the movement of the sun through the year with the vertical spokes marking the solstices and the horizontal spokes marking the equinoxes The second section represents the cross quarters “cross-quarter days,” “fire festivals,” or “Greater Sabbats”, these are a mix of Gaelic and Germanic festival but basically or from my understanding the cross quarters are the cycles of life and death. The truth be told the Wiccan Wheel of the Year as been made up and in fact at the very starting of Wicca only the Cross quarters where celebrated online pharmacy without prescription it was the Bricket Wood Coven that added the quarter days basically because the wanted more meeting They did this while Gerald Gardner was away although he did not object to the additions as this brought Wicca closer to Gardner’s Long time friend Ross Nichols’s Neo druidism groups the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids. Although this Wheel has no historical value in terms of reclaiming the Craft it is a valued addition to Wicca and in other pagan paths. For me the wheel is a great source of meditation, understanding of life and death, a reminder of the cycles in

Defending Eclectic Neopaganism

real-witch real-witch

There is a trend among some Reconstructionist Neopagans to dismiss Neopagans who are admitted Eclectics in their religious practice and philosophy. Recently, Sannion wrote an editorial titled “Defending Reconstructionism” to address the conflict and to present some of the arguments from a Reconstructionist’s viewpoint. Sannion’s editorial can be found on the web in the September 2002 issue (#27) of the Cauldron and Candle email newsletter, available at http://www.ecauldron.com. Sannion begins by saying that those who challenge Reconstructionism are “fluffy.” It must be pointed out that Neopagans who are not following specifically Reconstructionist paths are not necessarily “fluffy” by default. The term “fluffy” has come to mean Neopagan practitioners who are largely ignorant of their own religion’s history, sources, and often core issues. “Fluffy” Neopagans are thought to be involved in alternative religions for shock value or as a fashion statement rather than out of a desire for spiritual understanding and discipline. “Fluffy” Neopagans are those who accept any claim at face value — apparently lacking critical skills to distinguish objective reality from fantasy. “Fluffy” Neopagans generally lack credibility except amongst other “Fluffy” Neopagans, because they often can’t provide any evidence to support their claims. By clarifying what “fluffy” Neopagans are, it’s easier to recognize that there are indeed Neopagans who aren’t Reconstructionists who are also not “fluffy.” Doreen Valiente, Janet Fararr, Vivianne Crowley, Margot Adler, Starhawk — are these Neopagans “fluffy” because they aren’t specifically Reconstructionists? They are all Wiccans, and Wicca is outside the Reconstructionist category by most determinations. There are undoubtedly some individuals

Why Did the Neo-Pagan Chicken Cross the Road?

humor humor

Alexandrian/Gardnerian: To reveal this would be to break my oath of secrecy. I can say, though, that it really is an ancient rite, dating far back in time, back even before 1951, and I have learned it from an unbroken lineage. As Gerald said, it takes a chicken to make an egg. Asatru: First, we don’t believe in a “One Chicken” or a “Hen and Rooster.” We believe in many chickens. Second, “crossing the road” is part of the three levels, or worlds, and the chicken simply crossed from one level to another. Hail to the Chickens! British Traditional: The word “chicken” comes from a very specific Old English word (“gechekken”), and it only properly applies to certain fowl of East Anglia or those descended therefrom. As for the rest, I suppose they are doing something remotely similar to crossing the road, but you must remember that traditional roads are not to be confused with the modern roads…. Celtic: In County Feedbeygohn on Midsummer’s day, there is still practiced St. Henny’s Dance, which is a survival of the old pagan Chicken Crossing fertility rite. Today, modern pagans are reviving the practice, dedicated to the Hen and the Green Rooster. Ceremonial: “Crossing the road” is a phrase that summarizes many magical structures erected and timed by the chicken to produce the energy necessary for the intention of the travel across the road. For example, the astrological correspondences had to be correct, the moon had to be waxing (if the chicken intended to come to the other

The wheel has turned full circle

Now we have travel through all the major Sabbats and returned back at Beltaine. A year ago I launched the Cyber Cauldron with the hopes and dreams of earning enough money to survive as well as provide some information on witchcraft and paganism, which was informative and fun, a great start for the newbie. This journey allowed me the time to reflect on the things I have learned over the years. As well as giving more time with my goddess and sort out the person I really want to be. I have face new discoveries and have learned much about what it is to be a true pagan and a witch and have become friends with some very wonderful people. So as we close this year we will have to decide what to do next. Now the one thing that was always difficult was making the Cyber Cauldron a success but my view of what a success was at the time based on income, number of Facebook fans any thing that could be quantified “In a real sense”. So much so that as I looked to the figures I would get depressed and frustrated and begin to feel a failure. I would see other pages and site grow and grow some where total rubbish people claiming to be hereditary witches or claming to teach witchcraft in 5 easy steps and beat myself up on why I was not doing as well. So I decided to give the site up at the end of the year

Eclectic witchcraft

MagicCircleL MagicCircleL

Eclectic witchcraft is a strange form of paganism as although their a few books on the subject these are often subjective based a persons own personal experiences. Unlike those who follow neo pagan paths such as Wicca, Oslac, Celtic Shamanism, druidic etc there is no one to say what you are doing is wrong! The Eclectic witch is someone who embodies the true heart of a pagan and natural magicks learning through books and experimentation creating a personal spiritual path. The eclectic may be formally trained within one or more pagan path as I was but after many years of group practice may find that they need to find a more personal connection with the divine, one of the reasons the eclectic is a solitary path. The eclectic witch will often blend one or more paths ideologies and practices into a solid effective path, which will work for them alone. Most eclectic witches will often be Wiccan based and eclectic Wiccan’s now out number the Traditional Wiccan. The eclectic witch focuses on witchcraft rather that ritual and rite – some may say that the eclectic is sloppy and had hock in their practice, but this is far from the truth. The eclectic learns to work on instinct combining magicks and daily life as part of the natural course. For many neo pagan paths casting of circles / mystic plots and scared spaces is the only place where magicks are preformed for the eclectic this formality to magicks can become a barrier which stifles creativity and
