Wicca Beginner’s Guide

If you are thinking about beginning a journey on the Wicca path, it is helpful to know what you will need to get started. This is designed to help as a Wicca beginner’s guide to help you get started on your spiritual journey. Though it is not a complete Wicca beginner’s guide, it is a good start.

The first thing that any witch should learn about and understand are the five elements. The four basic elements are earth, water, fire, and wind. The fifth element is referred to in many different ways including void, akasha, and spirit. These elements represent every physical aspect of our experience in this physical form. The fifth element is the aspect of us that connects and relates, and uses, those other elements. Everything is made up of water, earth, fire, wind, or a combination of those elements. You must learn more about these elements if you wish to develeop any form of power.

The next thing that any person on the path must gain is a library of books. It is helpful for anyone on any spiritual path to have a teacher, and books are the quickest and easiest way to gain those teachers. Sure, people can follow the path on their own, however, a good or a few good teachers is essential to speed up the process significantly.

Any good Wicca beginner’s guide will also tell you that an understanding of plants, herbs, minerals, and colors is also essential. These are used in many different spells and each has it’s own ability. A good understanding of plants and herbs is especially essential. These are what the original Wiccan’s had a great understanding about. In fact, many women were burned at the stake because of their understanding of plants and their naturally healing and useful abilities.

These aspects alone in this Wicca beginner’s guide will keep you busy enough for years, however, if you are going to be a serious practitioner, you must know about and understand the holidays and ritual practices as well. There are four major, and four minor holiday’s through out the year. Though it is far to extensive for this little article, it is well worth your time and effort to study about and learn about.

Blood in the Cauldron

red blood cells 150x150 Blood in the CauldronPagans have a long history of violence not only the fact that human and animal sacrifice where used but even today in the more enlightened times human sacrifice is heard of. The last being this year (2010) in April where a human Head and torso was found in A temple of Kali near Chotomakdampur village in the western district of Birbhuma in West Bengal India

Although many Western pagans and neo pagan groups would not consider a human sacrifice as part of their rituals as they see it as being against the Goddess wishes some tribal polytheistic religions still use animal sacrifice as part of their practice.

Now we all know that during our history (at least 50,000 years of history) across the world that human sacrifices where commonplace as way of appeasing the Gods. Even many of today’s rituals and festivals are link to sacrifices which would of in times past required animals to be slaughter as a minimal offering and this would escalate to humans if crops failed repeatedly or other hardships where faced.

During this time in our history no one was excused from being sacrificed kings and leaders would be scarified to. Even Christianity has a dark past when it comes to blood scarifies the Old Testament is littered with account animal and human sacrifice.

This link with human and animal sacrifice is often glossed over and is not spoke about much today and where possible is dismissed as history of primitive cultures and has no relevance today days pagan which then brings up the debate on blood in rites and rituals.

As we all know that blood and fluids from the body can be used for very powerful magicks and at the same time we have a moral obligation if not a ethical belief that the use of such materials is against the wishes of the divine as all life is sacred to the Goddess and God although there are some goddess and gods who appreciate blood and sacrifice Kali for one (and she is not the only one by far).

This idea of using blood in ritual has always caused much debate among pagans some are completely against the idea where other say a single drop from a pinprick is as much as you need.

Personally the idea of blood in rituals or spells is something that has always baffled me I have spells that require a personal connection to be made for example a healing or cursing poppet will work much better if it contains something that belongs to the person being heal (note this can be a piece of cloth from clothing right up to part of the person themselves ie hair, nail, clippings, spit or blood (blood being the most powerful connection)) which is given freely (for cursing (dark magicks) can be taken or stolen). Or the most common blood ritual that I have taken part in, the ritual of brotherhood commonly known as blood brothers or Blood oath where two people blood is mixed making them the same family. There are even less common blood rituals that I have been involved in which many would not even consider to be a blood rite Tattooing is a blood rite I have a number of tattoos which include pentagrams, god and goddess symbols and the caduceus as these are draw on to the body blood flows and the connection is made in the same way the blood brother rite works the blood and the ink mixing becoming one.

Now I now many Wiccan’s who believe that blood use in spells and rituals is wrong and at the same time have numerous pagan style tattoos and would not even consider them to be apart of a blood rite (but there are some people that you can even argue with as they think they know best).

And I have already said that blood rites baffle me I feel that any rite where the goal is to spill blood is totally wrong but at the same time there are blood rites like blood brothers and tattoos which I have been involved in, so it seem that I am some what hypocritical of blood in rites, but the use of blood is a very tricky subject as it is not black and white. A blood oath (blood brothers etc) is a promise that is bound by ones own essence yes other bodily fluids can be used but have less of an impact, it is common or was common practice to spit on you hand before shaking hand to seal a deal.

If I was to put a limit on how much blood should be used in a ritual or spell I would have to say a single drop from a pin prick was more than sufficient as it is a symbolic gesture of your life energy that is being offered and the important word in all of that is YOUR. You should never offer someone else blood as sacrifice or be part of any ritual where blood of another is spilt in the name of the divine or even offer Your blood to the divine as an offering as this is wrong and against the divine.

A blood rite is for binding YOUR energy to another person (blood brothers) or object (personal talisman or amulet tattoo) and no more and where possible other bodily fluids should replace blood. I can see no reason why blood should be used in any rite apart from Blood Oaths (no more than a single drop is needed) and Tattooing; personal talismans can be consecrated using other bodily fluids.

Other Bodily fluids that can be used: -

Tears – to be used in talisman and amulets to prevent hurt, lose or pain

Sweat – to be used in talismans for hard work and success

Saliva – general replacement for blood and used in protection amulets

Urine – used in bottle spells and charms such as the witches bottle for protection

Semen / vaginal fluid any love charm or spell also for fertility

Menstruation blood only woman  (not for use in blood oaths as it is seen as impure) used the same way as urine

Warning

Blood buying prescription drugs online must never be consumed EVER and you should be wary of blood born diseases, which can be transmitted through contact or can become air born. Never offer blood as sacrifice even your own it to precious.

Final thoughts-

I can only think of two rites where blood is important and both these rites are life time commitments only when you are sure that you are prepared to commit to a life long connection to a person or tattoo should you agree to be involved in a blood rite as the bond you make will remain for your whole physical life and in the case of a blood oath will last for all future life too

As an Individual you will need to make up your own mind about blood in rites and rituals do not be coerced into doing something you do not feel is right morally or ethically

If you know that another will be harmed or is in danger you have an obligation to contact the local police department and inform them even if you are oath bound to say nothing.

Wicca Symbols and What They Can Mean to You

Pentagram2 Wicca Symbols and What They Can Mean to YouWicca symbols have been with us for centuries but are still as relevant to modern day Pagans and Wiccans as they ever were. Although there is some variation in the symbols from group to group, they are more often consistent in the conditions that they represent than not. This is an article on some of the most popular and potent symbols, which I have chosen because to me, they most strongly embody Wicca and what it stands for.

One of the most instantly recognisable of Wicca symbols is that of the pentacle – also known as the Witch’s Foot. It is a 5 point star in a circle and each point represents (going clockwise and starting at the top):

The Spirit

Earth

Air

Fire

Water

The circle around them unifies and binds them all. This Wicca symbol is extremely important and powerful as it represents you and your place within the world and its elements – you are the spirit. Each has equal placing, and to take out one element would be to change the very nature of the union.

This is the symbol that Wiccans wear to identify themselves and others with, making it the most identifiable mark of the Wiccan religion. It is worn with pride, and to mark the wearer’s dedication to, and respect for nature.

However, wearing this Wicca symbol is not without potential issues. There has long been a great misunderstanding that Wicca is somehow connected with dark forces, even Satanism. Fortunately, this could not be further from the truth. In fact, the wearer is stating that they are on a Magickal path, but one which will take them away from evil, not towards it. It signifies their desire to worship and honour natures in all its forms, and with respect for its great power. It is a personal pledge to give to nature and not to take from it unnecessarily.

Very similar to the pentacle, is the Wicca symbol of the pentagram – the 5 pointed star of the pentacle but which stands alone. This dynamic symbol represents the perfection found in nature and may be more familiar to you than you think – think of Leonardo Da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man! Pythagoreans also viewed it as a mathematical perfection. As much misunderstood as the pentacle, it has also been considered connected with dark forces, particularly when inverted.

But there are signs that things are changing and Wicca is starting to shake off these old style views. In April of 2007 in America, it was ruled that the pentacle would be recognised and issued in military cemeteries and for tombstones, where previously this had been denied.

So, what do the individual Wicca symbols that make up the pentagram represent in themselves?

Earth is sometimes formed as a Wicca symbol by using the quartered circle, the perfect cross within the sphere or alternatively as an inverted triangle with a horizontal line half way up. The symbol of earth is a feminine energy – earth and Mother Nature are often one and the same. It is the very foundation of our existence.

The Wicca symbol of air is almost the same as the triangle symbol for earth but the triangle is upright. This element is all around us, essential for life itself but also invisible so an element that we can easily take for granted. This symbol urges us to honour and respect it. On Wiccan altars, incense is often used on the east to represent air.

Water and fire also use the triangle but without the lines through them. Fire is upright and water is inverted.

The force and destructive power of fire cannot be mistaken. It is wondrous to behold when contained, but there is an ever present sense that it could take control from your hands at any time. This Wicca symbol acts as both a reminder and a warning to take seriously the great force that nature can be.

Water is the giver of life as well as deep and mysterious. Many people find that they have a great affinity with water and the sea, more so than the other elements as it seems to personify so many human emotions and characteristics. It is hard not to stand and watch the ocean without feeling at one with it.

These core Wicca symbols are only a few of the hundreds that you can study to further your understanding of both Wiccan and the planet that we inhabit, instilling a respect that will make you feel more complete.

The Charge Of The Goddess

MotherGoddessEarth 150x150 The Charge Of The GoddessWhenever ye have need of anything,

once in the month and better it be when the moon is full,

then shall ye assemble in some secret place,

and adore the spirit of me,

who am Queen of all witches.

There shall ye assemble,

ye who are fain to learn all sorcery,

yet have not won its deepest secrets;

to these will I teach all things that are as yet unknown.

And ye shall be free from slavery;

and as a sign that ye be truly free,

you shall be naked in your rites;

and ye shall dance, sing, feast, make music and love,

all in my praise.

For mine is the ecstasy of the spirit,

and mine also is joy on earth;

for my law is love unto all beings.

Keep pure your highest ideals;

strive ever towards them,

let nothing stop you or turn you aside.

For mine is the secret door which

opens upon the Land of Youth,

and mine is the cup of the wine of life,

and the Cauldron of Cerridwen,

which is the Holy Vessel of Immortality.

I am the gracious Goddess,

who gives the gift of joy unto the heart of man.

Upon earth,

I give the knowledge of the spirit eternal;

and beyond death,

I give peace, and freedom,

and reunion with those who have gone before.

Nor do I demand sacrifice;

for behold, I am the Mother of all living,

and my love is poured out upon the Earth.

I am the beauty of the green earth,

and the white moon among the stars,

and the mystery of the waters,

and the desire of the heart of man.

Call unto thy soul, arise, and come unto me.

For I am the soul of Nature,

who gives life to the Universe.

From me all things proceed,

and unto me all things must return;

and before my face, beloved of gods and of men,

let thine innermost divine self be enfolded,

in the rapture of the infinite.

Let my worship be within the heart that rejoicest,

for behold, all acts of love and pleasure are my rituals.

Therefore, let there be beauty and strength,

power and compassion, honor and humility,

mirth and reverence within you.

And thou who thinketh to seek for me,

know thy seeking and yearning shall avail thee not,

unless thou knoweth the mystery;

that if that which thou seekest thou findest not within thee,

thou wilt never find it without thee.

For behold, I have been with thee from the beginning;

and I am that which is attained at the end of desire.

2 Simple Wicca Spells To Make You Successful In Life

Everyone wants success. That is already a given. But the trick is finding it, or, for it to find you. If you want to succeed in life but you don’t know where to start AND you just happen to be just a little bit spiritual, may I suggest that you try several Wicca spells to help get you started. Wicca spells have allowed many a great people find success in life. Good karmic spells allow good positive energies to surround the caster as he/she invokes the power of the spell. If you are new to this, you don’t have to worry. These spells are very simple but it can drastically change the way you think and do things.

A lot of Wicca spells offer the caster certain attributes and qualities up until the spells last. Some of the spells that I’ve read up on are spells that grant the Wiccan caster the power of prophetic visions. Some enable the caster to see inanimate objects or spirits as what some would say. There are other more fantastic spells that are out there like the ability of flight and of an out of the body experience. Today though, we will start with some very simple Wicca spells to help you achieve greater things in life.

Before you continue, I need to remind you that for Wicca spells to work, you must clear your mind of any negative thoughts. Thoughts of violence, revenge, vandalism or theft will just not work. Focus only on what is good. Wicca is a branch of witchcraft that was not meant to inflict harm on anyone or anything. In fact, majority of Wiccan practitioners follow the Wiccan Rede – it is a structured guideline on what can and cannot be done with Wicca spells. The Wiccan Rede has but one very fundamental law: do what you want, just don’t harm others.

Spell of Wisdom

For this spell, you will need a table, a chair, and an object of focus. I would recommend an old book. Leather bound if possible. First, place the book on the table in front of you. Have a seat, and cross your feet. If you are a leftie, the left foot should be in front, and if you are right-handed, the right-foot should be in front. Now concentrate your mind on the book and most importantly, keep your eyes on it. As you begin to concentrate, chant the following verses:

“Concentrate myself on the things above and learning all the things I love.

Wisdom be my guide. Knowledge be my guide. Your Spirit be my guide.”

Of course, the effects of the spell will not be realized until you apply it to something. Try studying after casting the spell. You will find that learning will come so much easier.

Spell Of Health

It is best to invoke the Wicca spell of health during the morning just before breakfast. For this spell you will need to brew a potion. Don’t worry, there are no cauldrons involved here – not yet anyway.

Here are the ingredients of the health potion:

1 cup lemon juice

2 cups drinking water

1 tablespoon brown sugar

1 gram crushed moringa leaves

1 tablespoon virgin coconut oil

a small sprinkle of mint

To prepare the potion, just mix all of the ingredients together in a standard mixing pot and once prepared pour the mixture in a cup or a glass. Before drinking the potion, recite the spell:

“This day I live on given time, to You I give oh most divine

For health and strength to live this day; may Your spirit be mine”

After casting the spell, drink the brewed potion, and that’s it! The spell should allow you to feel a lot healthier the rest of the day. Also, as a side note, Wicca spells like these are rare because it can be done on a daily basis. It will be really beneficial and healthy to the spell caster.

Nature Vs Supernature In Wicca

wicca 235x300 Nature Vs Supernature In WiccaWhether it is being lovingly described by its adherents, tallied as a social movement by impartial statisticians, or even decried as “Satanic” by Christian apologists, Wicca is almost universally (alongside its many modern neo-pagan cousins) labeled an “Earth Religion.”Wicca is most certainly, in practice, a religion closely aligned with the Living Earth and Her seasonal changes, which lie at the root of our most important celebrations, the Sabbats. But to call Wicca an “Earth Religion”and stop there is to seek the whole of Wicca’s thealogical foundation in, and to limit the scope of its meaning and applicability to, the details of human existence on this one tiny planet floating like an anonymous raindrop in the vast ocean of stars, quasars, nebulae and galaxies we now know the universe to be.

Our ancient ancestors did not share our modern understanding of cosmology, as evidenced by the tendency of pretty much every pre-science religion on Earth, pagan or otherwise, to locate this one tiny planet at the center of physical reality (where it surely appears to be to earthbound humans observing the circular movements of stars in the night sky), rather than where we now objectively know it to reside – on the insignificant edge of a minor galaxy nowhere near the center of anything.

Any religion that hopes to maintain its relevance in the age of quantum physics and the Hubbell Space Telescope must be able to offer meaningful spiritual insight into the real grandeur of our universe, on the smallest and largest scales, as it is revealed by modern science, as well as the Earth’s place in that grand universe, and Humanity’s role – not only in the life of the Earth, but also in that of the real physical Heavens the Earth inhabits, and of everything existing between Heaven and Earth as well. Such a religion must be flexible enough to incorporate new discoveries about Humanity, the Earth and the universe into its beliefs without surrendering its credibility, to welcome new scientific discoveries as puzzle pieces to be fit into a continuing revelation of an infinite spiritual truth.

I believe that Wicca is the one religion on Earth most uniquely equipped to face this challenge of modernity, for, in spite of even well-intentioned misrepresentations, Wicca is not now, nor has it ever been, solely an “Earth Religion.” Wicca is a religion that is centered in and reveres Nature – whether that Nature be expressed in the teeming life and wind and water of our planet’s biosphere, in the nuclear processes that energize our sun, or in the swirling push and pull of gravity that spins our (and every other) galaxy into being.

Wicca acknowledges that there is only one Nature, and it is everywhere. There is not anything, anywhere – not in galaxies rushing at breakneck speed through the depths of space, not in the Earthly water cycle that brings Alaska’s glaciers raining down on China’s croplands, not in the invisible bustle of bosons zinging this very moment through my computer’s micro-processor, or anyplace in between – that can be rightly labeled un-natural, outside of Nature, whose processes are determined by any force other than Nature’s sovereign power.

Wicca is not a supernatural religion like Christianity, Islam or Judaism, although it is often condemned as supernatural by these very institutions. These major Middle Eastern religions all posit a God who exists outside of the physical universe, a male “Creator”deity who is said to have fashioned the universe from dead matter just as a stonemason “creates”a solid wall by gluing together rocks, and who is believed to reside in a “Heaven”located somewhere “outside”the physical universe He created. How much more supernatural can you get? Every aspect of this belief violates the evidence to be found in real, physical Nature as to how things are and came to be – beginning, and very much to the point here, with the supposition of an un-observable “outside”to the physical universe. Wicca, being a natural (as opposed to supernatural) religion, posits no such “outside,”or any deity inhabiting such an unlikely space.

Nor does Wicca posit any such wildly supernatural notions as male-only deity or, really (though many Wiccan authors use the term – in my opinion, quite thoughtlessly), a Created universe or an implied building-block Creator of any kind. Referring to the physical/natural world as Creation immediately centers the discussion in a masculine, Judeo-Christian context, and I feel all Wiccans everywhere should stop using this term at once.

The central deity of the Wiccan religion is the Great Goddess, and we see concrete evidence for Her reality and presence in every living particle of the real natural world. If there is not one single living thing on the Earth, from amoebas to human beings to the whole spectrum of life between them, that can be observed being “created”by anybody out of the “bricks”of “dead matter”(and there’s really not – think about it!), then why should we assume that an opposite rule applies to anything else in the universe – let alone to everything else, as is posited by those Middle Eastern religions?

Everything alive, here on Earth, is born of a woman, of a female creature of its own species. In Wicca, we see everything that is – from the sub-atomic particles that make up atoms, to the molecules atoms come together to form, to all matter and energy (and the water and rocks and gases and plants and people and suns and galaxies that arise from their eternal, cosmic dance) – as alive and conscious, varying only in degree. For Wiccans, the physical universe is not a dead thing constructed for Man’s pleasure or control by some distant male god. It is Her body, the real, physical, sensually vibrant, lush and beautiful body of the Great Goddess, the Mother of All, and everything we believe as Wiccans flows from this understanding. We exist within Her and participate in the intimate processes of Her being, alongside every other living thing in the universe that, like us, and following the observable pattern to be found in real Nature (as opposed to some unlikely, imagined “super-nature”), was never created at all, but that is rather continually born within Her, and who is composed, just like us, of the real physical substance of Her body.

To view the reality of the Great Goddess of Wicca for ourselves, we need look no further than our own bodies, our own planet, our own universe. Our Goddess is not some distant, invisible, disembodied spirit, nor is she “supernatural”in any way, shape or form. Our Goddess is Nature, in all its manifestations. From the inconceivable whole of the vast, living universe to that universe’s tiniest constituent particle, She is physically, spiritually, energetically and personally everywhere. All the time. The Great Goddess of Wicca is All That Is, past, present and future, here on Earth, in every distant corner of the physical cosmos, and in all the seen and unseen spaces in between. There is nothing you can look to that is not Her, that is not born of Her, that does not bear the imprint of Her essence, or that fails to play its assigned role in Her life.

Sex, sexuality and magick

SexSpells SexSpell 175x3002 Sex, sexuality and magickThe god is the symbol of male potency he is often portrayed a horned figure his symbols are the male penis erect, the woods horned animals such as the stag, the Athame and the sword. While the goddess is the symbol for the feminine mysteries and her symbols are the vagina, the cup and the cauldron.

In the Wiccan tradition groups are normally male / female, male / female with the group being head by a High Priest and Priestess, and one of the most important rituals in Wicca is the Great Rite. During this rite, which celebrates the union of the God and Goddess. The High Priest will assume the part of the God and the Priestess will assume the role of the goddess.

The God aspect in ritual is the Goddess’s consult and their union is played out in the Great Rite in some groups this ritual is acted out and in other groups the rite is a full or partial sexual act between the high priest and priestess. Sex is something pagans and Wiccan’s treat as sacred and is always done in great reverence and where the rite is physically performed a couple in a relationship that are shielded from the group or they withdraw and return after the act.

Although pagan enjoy sex … a lot! it is sacred act to us in magicks and in life and would never, rape, abuse children or have sex with animals. All pagans will agree to very basic ethical rules when it comes to sex.

  1. Sexual partners must be of legal age.
  2. Sexual partners must consent and be a willing participant.
  3. Sexual partners must be of the same species.
  4. All acts of sex are gifts from the goddess and should be enjoyed not endured.
  5. Homosexuality is normal many of the gods are gay or enjoy same sex relations.
  6. Sex should never invoke fear, pain or distress

Wiccan and pagan rituals contain a lot of sexual symbology the Athame being plunged in to a Chalice is a representation of intercourse. Wiccan’s and pagans believe that sex energy is very powerful and potent and will often use sex in spell casting. The basic idea is that the rhythm of sex raises energy to climax when it is release just like building a cone of power.

Single people, couples or groups can preform sex magicks and there are many books on the subject of sex magick. Sex magicks should only be preformed by willing and knowing partners as it one of the most sacred act a Wiccan or pagan can perform.

Why Did the Neo-Pagan Chicken Cross the Road?

humor 208x300 Why Did the Neo Pagan Chicken Cross the Road? Alexandrian/Gardnerian: To reveal this would be to break my oath of secrecy. I can say, though, that it really is an ancient rite, dating far back in time, back even before 1951, and I have learned it from an unbroken lineage. As Gerald said, it takes a chicken to make an egg.

Asatru: First, we don’t believe in a “One Chicken” or a “Hen and Rooster.” We believe in many chickens. Second, “crossing the road” is part of the three levels, or worlds, and the chicken simply crossed from one level to another. Hail to the Chickens!

British Traditional: The word “chicken” comes from a very specific Old English word (“gechekken”), and it only properly applies to certain fowl of East Anglia or those descended therefrom. As for the rest, I suppose they are doing something remotely similar to crossing the road, but you must remember that traditional roads are not to be confused with the modern roads….

Celtic: In County Feedbeygohn on Midsummer’s day, there is still practiced St. Henny’s Dance, which is a survival of the old pagan Chicken Crossing fertility rite. Today, modern pagans are reviving the practice, dedicated to the Hen and the Green Rooster.

Ceremonial: “Crossing the road” is a phrase that summarizes many magical structures erected and timed by the chicken to produce the energy necessary for the intention of the travel across the road. For example, the astrological correspondences had to be correct, the moon had to be waxing (if the chicken intended to come to the other side of the road) or waning (if the chicken intended to flee to the other side of the road), and the chicken had to prepare herself through fasting and proper incantations. Note certain forms of invocation (summoning an egg inside your chicken self) can produce abnormal or even dangerous eggs and should only be conducted inside a properly erected barnyard.

Chaos: Thinking in terms of “roads” and “crossings” is simply looking at the formal, typically perceived structure of chicken crossing space-time. We, instead, focus on the possibility of chicken crossing itself; what appears to be a random act is thus actually the norm — it is the road which is the freak of chance. Indeed, quantum mechanics now demonstrates what we knew all along two roads can simultaneously exist in the same place at the same time. Thus, by attuning ourselves to the dynamic energy (called “crossing”), we can manifest the road. Of course, to the unknowledgeable, this appears as a chicken crossing the road.

Dianic: The chykyn (“chicken” is term of patriarchal oppression) sought to reclaim for herself the right to be on the other side of the road, after it had been denied to her for centuries. By doing so, she reawakened the power of the Hen within herself.

Discordian: cock-a-doodle-doo!

Druid: To get to the sacred grove, of course! Keep in mind that 99% of everything written about chickens-crossing-the-road is pure hogwash, based on biased sources. Yes, there were a few unfortunate chicken sacrifices in the past, but that is over now…

Eclectic: Because it seemed right to her at the time. She used some Egyptian style corn and a Celtic sounding word for the road and incorporated some Native American elements into her Corn-name, Chicken-Who-Dances-and-Runs-with-the-Wolves.

Faery: In twilight times and under sparkling stars, those properly trained can still see the chickens crossing the roads. Reconnecting with these “fey-fowl” as they cross is crucial to restoring the balance between the energies of modern development and living with the earth.

Family Traditional: Growing up, we didn’t think much about “crossing the road.” A chicken was a chicken. It crossed the road because that was what worked to get her to the other side. We focused on what worked, and we worked more with the elders of the barnyard and less with all this “guardians of the chickencoop” business. We didn’t get our concepts of “chickens” or “the other side” from Gardner, either. You can choose not to believe us since we did not “scratch down” on paper what was clucked to us orally (which, at certain times in history, was the only way to avoid becoming Easter chicken soup!), but that doesn’t change the facts there were real chickens, and they really did cross the road!

Kitchen Witch: The chicken crossed the road to get food, to get a rooster or to get away from me after I decided to have chicken for supper!

Left Hand Path: White, fluffy chickens prancing across the road ! Do you think that is all there is to crossing the road? Do you dare to know the dark side of crossing the road and the other path to self-development?

New Age: The chicken crossed the road because she chose this as one her lessons to learn in this life. Besides, there was so much incense and bright, white corn to explore on the Other Side.

Newbie: well, ’cause I read in this really kewl book that said, like, chickens are supposed to cross the road, right?

Posting on an Online Discussion Group: What the hell do you mean ‘why did the chicken cross the road?’ ???!!!??? Haven’t you read any of the previous posts? We’ve been [expletive deleted] debating every word of that question, painstakingly trying to come to some kind of answer. I know you wrote ‘all i wanted to know was why chickens cross the road, im not looking for any chicken spells’ but I’m fed up with newbies who can’t even bother to REEEEEEEEAAADDD the posts on that very topic! No, this is not a flame. But, I and several others here have the maturity to properly explore and respond to this question, and we were properly trained; we didn’t just read a book and think we were full-fledged chickens.

“Sethian”/Jane Roberts: Session 666; Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1969; 9:00 p.m. Now, you create your own chicken, each of you individually and en masse. Your physical senses fool you into believing you are seeing a chicken crossing the road, when instead, the chicken has already crossed the road, and hasn’t even begun to cross the road. There is a probable chicken that never crossed the road as well. Further, because you each perceive a chicken, there is not only one chicken but, in fact, many different chickens. As I have said before, time is simultaneous. All probable versions of the chicken–past, present and future–exist at once in the spacious present. It is only because you believe [emphatically] that time is linear, with each moment followed by another in one-line kind of fashion, that you perceive the chicken taking chicken steps to get to the other side of the road. It does no good to ask “Which came first, the chicken or the egg,” either, for they both exist at once in simultaneous time. [910 p.m.] Now, there are families of chicken consciousness. All life seeks value fulfillment, for consciousness is consciousness. What you perceive as a chicken may be something far different in another reality. The chicken may, for example, be a fragment personality of your entity. The chicken is no less than you are, however, simply because it is a chicken. Now, the chicken has its reality, and you have your reality. But the chicken is more than a chicken [emphatically], and you are more than you think that you are! [Pause one minute] The chicken crosses the road because it believes it can, and it does. It knows that it is sacred and that it will not die. You (underline ‘you’) also are sacred and you will not die. But as long as you believe that it is unsafe to cross the road, you must take chicken steps and obey the laws that you have agreed upon to get to to the other side safely. [End at 9:30 p.m. Jane came out of trance easily. She didn't remember a word she had spoken as Seth.]

Solitaire: The chicken didn’t want to be part of a coven or an oven.

Shaman: Crossing the road is a way to reconnect with the healing, visionary lifeways of the past. Chickens have long known this, but increasingly the Rooster’s Movement is adding more roosters to the crossings too.

Snert: Hey, are you guys really chickens? Can you giveme a spellthat will make a chicken cross the road?

Wiccan: The chicken crossed the road because she felt like she was finally “coming home.” She could do it alone or with others, but she had to call to the Guardians of the Watchtowers of the Barnyard first … uhm, after casting the circle.

History of Witchcraft

Thebaans Schrift 211x3006 History of WitchcraftAs I am trying to put this all together, I hope to bring about an understanding that Witchcraft, like any religion, has undergone it’s changes throughout the centuries. It is my personal feeling, however, that the religion of Witchcraft has undergone far fewer changes than any other in history.

As the song sung by Neil Diamond starts:

“Where it began, I can’t begin to knowin…”

Witchcraft, sorcery, magic, whatever can only begin to find its roots when we go back as far as Mesopotamia. With their deities for all types of disasters, such as Utug – the Dweller of the Desert waiting to take you away if you wandered to far, and Telal – the Bull Demon, Alal – the destroyer, Namtar – Pestilence, Idpa – fever, and Maskim – the snaresetter; the days of superstition were well underway.

It was believed that the pharaohs, kings, etc. all imbued some power of the gods, and even the slightest movement they made would cause an action to occur. It was believed that a picture, or statue also carried the spirit of the person. This is one of the reasons that they were carried from place to place, and also explains why you see so many pictures and statues of these persons with their hands straight to their sides.

In the Bible, we find reference to “The Tower of Babel” or The Ziggurat in Genesis 11. “Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. As men moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar (Babylonia) and settled there. They said to each other, `Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.’ They used brick instead of stone, and tar instead of mortar. Then they said, `Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth.’ But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower that the men were building. The Lord said, `If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.’” It goes on to say that the tower was never finished.

In other references, we find that the “Tower” was in fact finished, and that it was a tower that represented the “stages” between earth and heaven (not a tower stretching to the heaven in the literal sense.) From this reference, it was a tower built in steps. A hierarchy on which heaven and hell were based. It was actually a miniature world representing the Mountain of Earth.

Each stage was dedicated to a planet, with its angles symbolizing the four corners of the world. They pointed to Akkad, Saburtu, Elam, and the western lands. The seven steps of the tower were painted in different colors which corresponded to the planets. The “Great Misfortune:, Saturn, was black. The second was white, the color of Jupiter. The third, brick-red, the color of Mercury, followed by blue, Venus; yellow, Mars, gray or silver for the moon. These colors boded good or evil, like their planets.

For the first time, numbers expressed the world order. A legend depicts Pythagoras traveling to Babylon where he is taught the mystery of numbers, their magical significance and power. The seven steps often appear in magical philosophy. The seven steps are: stones, fire, plants, animals, man, the starry heavens, and the angels. Starting with the study of stones, the man of wisdom will attain higher and higher degrees of knowledge, until he will be able to apprehend the sublime, and the eternal. Through ascending these steps, a man would attain the knowledge of God, whose name is at the eighth degree, the threshold of God’s heavenly dwelling.

The square was also a “mystical” symbol in these times, and though divided into seven, was still respected. This correlated the old tradition of a fourfold world being reconciled with the seven heavens of later times.

It is thought that here was the start to numerology, but for this to have developed to the point where they had taken into consideration the square as the fourfold world, it would have had to have developed prior to this.

From Mesopotamia lets move over to Persia.

Unlike the Mesopotamians, and Egyptians, who believed that all was done with either the favour or lack thereof of the Gods, the Chaldean star religion taught that luck and disaster were no chance events, but were controlled from the heavenly bodies (planets/stars) which send good and bad according to mathematical laws. It was their belief that man was incapable of fighting the will of the planet divinities. Though, the more this system evolved, the more the wise men read ethical values into man’s fate. The will of the stars was not completely separate from man’s behaviors. The stars were important, but not omnipotent in deciding man’s fate. It was believed that the star Sirius would carry messages to the higher gods and he returned to announce their will.

Around the 7th Century BC Zoroaster, the Median prophet was preaching the doctrines that evil could be avoided and defeated. He brought about the principles of the good and evil spirits. Below, we will look at the beliefs and influences of this man’s life which created the religion named after him.

The first of the belief structure had to do with Ormazd (Ahura-Mazda) king of light, and his twin brother Ahriman (Anro-Mainyu) prince of darkness.

Zoroaster brought about the belief in the “holy war” (that between good and evil.) In this faith, the archangels (the spirits of Divine Wisdom, Righteousness, Dominion, Devotion, Totality, and Salvation) and the demons (the spirits of Anarchy, Apostasy, Presumption, Destruction, Decay, and Fury) were constantly at battle with one another. The archangels were controlled by Ormazd and the demons by Ahriman.

This religion had it’s belief that in the end, Ormazd and his demons would prevail, but until then, Ormazd would keep the world safe.

It is interesting that the last of the demons (the demon of Fury) holds such a hard and fast thought that it was incorporated into the Hebrew and Christian belief structure. The last arch-demon’s name is Aeshma Daeva also know to the Hebrews as Ashmadai and to Christians as Asmodeus.

Asmodeus was the “chief of the fourth hierarchy of evil demons”, called “the avengers of wickedness, crimes and misdeeds.” He appears with three heads, a bull’s, human, and a ram. He has goose feet, and a snake’s tail. To appear more frightening, he also exhales fire and rides upon a dragon of hell.

It is said that Asmodeus is not to be feared. When you say to him: “In truth thou art Asmodeus,” he will give you a wonderful ring. He will teach you geometry, arithmetic, astronomy and mechanics. When questioned, he answers truthfully.

The other demons tempt people away from the true worship of Mazda. They are Paromaiti – Arrogance, Mitox – The Falsely Spoken Word, Zaurvan – Decrepitude, Akatasa – Meddlesomeness, Vereno – Lust.

Much of the current day Christian beliefs were taken from this man’s religion. (That of good and evil forces, the redemption, the “savior” factor, etc.)

From here, let us move on to Egypt where we will look at other mystical symbols and more history of magic and the craft.

The Sphinx was a mythological creature with lion’s body and human head, an important image in Egyptian and Greek art and legend. The word sphinx was derived by Greek grammarians from the verb sphingein (to bind or squeeze), but the etymology is not related to the legend and is dubious.

The winged sphinx of Boeotian Thebes, the most famous in legend, was said to have terrorized the people by demanding the answer to a riddle. If the person answered incorrectly, he or she was eaten by the sphinx. It is said that Oedipus answered properly where upon the sphinx killed herself.

The earliest and most famous example in art is the colossal Sphinx at Giza, Egypt. It dates from the reign of King Khafre (4th king of 4th dynasty; c. 2550 BC.)

The Sphinx did not occur in Mesopotamia until around 1500 BC. when it was imported from the Levant. In appearance, the Asian sphinx differed from its Egyptian model mostly in the addition of wings to the leonine body. This feature continued through its history in Asia and the Greek world.

Another version of the sphinx was that of the female. This appeared in the 15th century BC. on seals, ivories and metalworkings. They were portrayed in the sitting position usually with one paw raised. Frequently, they were seen with a lion, griffin or another sphinx.

The appearance of the sphinx on temples and the like eventually lead to a possible interpretation of the sphinx as a protective symbol as well as a philosophical one.

The Sphinx rests at the foot of the 3 pyramids of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkure. It talons stretch over the city of the dead as it guards its secrets.

The myth goes that a prince who later became Thutmose IV, took a nap in the shadow of the half-submerged Sphinx. As he slept, the Sun-god (whom the Sphinx represents, appeared to him in a dream. Speaking to him as a son, he told the prince that he would succeed to the throne and enjoy a long and happy reign. He urged the prince to have the Sphinx cleared of the sand.

In his book on Isis and Osiris, Plutarch (AD 45-126) says that the Sphinx symbolizes the secret of occult wisdom, though Plutarch never unveiled the mysteries of the Sphinx. It is said that the magic of the Sphinx lies within the thousands of hands that chiseled at the rock. The thoughts of countless generations dwell in it; numberless conjurations and rites have built up in it a mighty protective spirit, a soul that still inhabits this time-scarred giant.

Another well know superstition of the peoples of Ancient Egypt was that regarding their dead.

They believed that in the West lies the World of the Dead, where the Sun-god disappears every evening. The departed were referred to as “Westerners.” It was believed that, disguised as birds, the dead soar into the sky where in his heavenly barge Ra, the Sun- god, awaits them and transforms them into stars to travel with him through the vault of the heavens.

The Charge of the God

Cernunnos 150x150 The Charge of the GodListen to the Words of the Horned God,

Who was of old called among men:

Adonis, Tammuz, Dianus, Herne,Bran, Beli, Lugh, Gwyn,Dionysus, Osiris, Cernunnos, Pan,

And by many other Names.

O Secret of Secrets,

That art hidden in the being of all that lives,

Not Thee do we adore,

For That which adoreth is also Thou.

Thou art That, and That am I.

I am the Flame that burns in the heart of every being,

And in the core of every Star.

I am Life, and the Giver of Life,

Yet therefore is the Knowledge of Me

The Knowledge of Death and Resurrection.

I am alone, the Lord within ourselves,

Whose Name is Mystery of Mysteries.

I am the Horned God.

I am the Lord of the Universe,

The Father of all living,

The All-Devourer and the All-Begetter.

I am He Whose Seed lies strewn

As glittering Gems across velvet darkness

Within the Womb of the Mother.

I am the Lord of the Shadows

In the darkness of the Underworld,

For I am the Midnight Sun.

I am the Light of the Stars,

And the Spark of the Spirit Eternal,

For I am the God Within.

I am the Horned Leader of the Hosts of Air,

The Leader of the Wild Hunt,

The Judge of Gods and of Men.

I am the Hidden God,

Who ever yet remains,

For I dwell within the secret seed.

I am the seed of grain,

I am the seed of flesh,

I am the Seed of the Stars.

I am the Lord of the Heights,

I am the Lord of the Depths,

God of forest, of flock, and of field.

I am the Hunter and Hunted,

I am the wolf and the Shepherd,

I am the vine and the grain.

I am a Guiding Star above you,

I am a bright Flame before you,

I am a smooth Path beneath you.

I am the Light of Life.

I am the Flame of Love.

I am the Horned God!
