Where Magick come to life

Do Pagans pray

binding love spell 150x150 Do Pagans prayPagans do pray but not in the Christian way with palms pressed on bended knee. For many neo pagans the Christian way is considered pleading rather then praying. For a pagan a pray is a direct correspondence with a deity /spirit / or divine and are used mostly for gaining wisdom, and that being said many pagans will prepare to pray.

Preparation will include ritual cleansing or bath or shower, preparing sacred space have the appropriate offerings for the deity / spirit.

A circle or sacred space is created and then the deity is called to attend offering are offer to encourage the presence of the deity / spirit.

The person once they have felt the presence of the deity / spirit the person would state who they are and by what right they have to call the deity / spirit in question. This can often be a long process of speaking your history, training and anything that the person thinks the deity would like to know.

If the deity / spirit sees the person as worthy they will stay the person would the petition the deity / spirit for what they require listing the reason why they need or want and how it will be used. Only the very foolish will try to strike a bargain offering personal favours in return for what they require.

If the deity / spirit has been duly impressed by your petition the answers will come to you it almost like speaking with the words of the spirit or deity you will know whether your going to get what you need or not if you are going to get the you will be told what you need to change to create the successful or the reasons why your not going to receive what you what.

Prays can be combined with creative visualisations which are used to increase the experience and spiritual connections to the deity /spirit. Prays to the element are often used to allow a new student of the art to connect with the elemental forces,

Here is an example of a pray please feel free to adapt any way you wish

Pray to air

I <insert name> stand here before you almighty element of air, I am a child of air with out you I cease to exists, and I call you as your child you touch me inside and out you who are my life’s breath the gentle breeze on my skin, my wild natures are your wild winds, my thought are your words and wisdoms.

I inhale you and you fill me you touch each and every cell in me we are one connected I carry you in me.

Air I honour you Air am I worthy….

… I <insert name> who seen as worthy, petition that you almighty air to share your understanding How do I <insert name> become more at one with the elemental for of air what do I not see what do I not know where do I need to go to connect with you. I ask this of you as I need to have greater understand of you air so I may grow as a person both in my daily life and my spiritual path.

(Silent meditation comes now as you share the connections when ready to continue and you will no what and when to say what you answer will be you would normal assume the element of air similar to drawing down the moon)

I am Air the breath of life the gentle winds the soft breeze the wild gales and hurricanes…. (just say what feels right )

Always end prays by thanking the spirit /deity releasing sacred space in your normal way.

I have not come across any other formal for pagan prays although their must be a few prays are also associated with spells and ritual work as a whole each of them are a pray but are seen as performing magicks rather than pray work.

Chanting is also another form of pray but is referred to as energy rising and as I sit here and think very few pagan books mention pray and if they do they are very under played although their are books on pagan pray. I not sure if its more to do with the neo pagan paths that remove Christian terms from the text that pray seems to be a little under rated. But whether we pray or do ritual we must remember that we are communicating with spiritual beings and we should show them honour in our words and our deeds.

So mote it is one of the common ways of ending communications with spiritual beings in ritual which means the same thing as amen “so it be” so we it truth much of what pagans do is pray it just that we call it by a different name.

The Seven Hermitic Laws

3dec2syns4 150x1504 The Seven Hermitic LawsAs I a bit of a science geek as well as being a Witch when I came across the 7 hermitic laws I was fascinated on how these 7 basic rules applied to life the universe and the principles of  magick . The  seven Hermitic laws  are; Mentalism, Correspondence, Vibration, Polarity, Rhythm, Cause and Effect and finally Gender.

From my point of view these laws can, when applied together correctly can produce outstanding results. The laws themselves have long drawn out explanations so I have come up with a simple one line statement and explanation.

1st Law “Mentalism

The god is the mind; the universe is the mental projection.

For me this means that everything can be perceived or imagined can become real and we all have the power since we are all part of the divine force which gives us the power of the gods. All you need is to declare yourself a god/dess then you are a god/dess.

2nd Law “Correspondence

As above so below, as below so above,

This is a weird one as it can be taken in lots of ways, but for me it a reminder that everything is inter-connected. Nothing is separate everything belongs to something else if something is removed then the whole ceases to insist.

3rd Law “Vibration”

Nothing rests, everything moves everything vibrates.

This one for me is relies on quantum physics and the understanding that even at the smallest particle is in motion and that the motions causes a vibration at a sub atomic level.

4th Law “Polarity

Everything is dual everything has a pole & opposite

Polarity for me is easy to comprehend I just have to think of a magnet it is equally negative and positive and if that balance shifts then it stops being a magnet- this law is basically is everything has its equal and opposite.

5th “Rhythm”

Everything flows everything has tides all things rise & fall

In its basic form everything has a beat, rhythm or ebb and flow. These rhythms are easy to detect the heartbeat, the pulse of a quartz crystal, the ebb and flow of the tide are easy to detect but some rhythms are very slow or very fast that they are over looked or dismissed such as the rhythms of the seasons or the rhythm of a electron flowing around a nuclei.

6th Law “Cause & Effect”

Every cause has an effect & every effect has a cause

For me this law reminds me to be ethical in magickal and daily life. And the everything has an equal and opposite reaction, when casting a spell for what ever reason their will be a reaction. I can explain this with an analogy “be careful for what you wish for you just might get it”

7th Law “Gender”

Gender is everything, everything is masculine & feminine gender manifest on all plane.

This is the final reminder that sexual values such as male and female are ways to divide things in two, and by polarizing gender we upset the vibration of the true whole. In everything is both male and female although this balance is not always equal as explained by the play write Aristophanes  in the Origins of Love (see youtube video below.)

The hermitic laws are studied in greater details in  Hermeticism  or the Western Hermetic Tradition  is a set of philosophical and religious beliefs or [ gnosis based primarily upon the Hellenistic  Egyptian pseudepigraphical writings attributed to  Hermes  Trismegistus who is the representation of the conflation of the Egyptian god  Thoth with the Greek Hermes. These beliefs have heavily influenced the Western Esoteric Tradition and were considered to be of great importance during the Renaissance
