Persephone

persephone and hades 202x300 PersephoneThe myths surrounding Persephone has always been my favourites, the mix of love and revenge, of life and death and rebirth.

Persephone is the queen of the Underworld wife to Hades (her uncle) she was the daughter of Zeus and Demeter.

The Myth of Persephone and the Underworld is a myth that if wrote today would probably be a best seller, it is a mix of kidnap, arranged marriage, mental instability and Horror. Not only dose it contain all that it contain the ability to read your own story into it.

One of the biggest questions to ask when looking at Persephone is did she love Hades? Was she in on it? Did she choose a life in the underworld rather than returning to an over baring mother?

The Basic story states that Persephone was playing with her nymphs in a flowery meadow when the earth opens and out rides Hades and grabs Persephone and carries her to the Underworld.

The Goddess Hecate heard Persephone’s cries and informs Demeter and together the search the Earth using Hecate’s torches to light the way. When they cannot find her Hecate suggest the Demeter asks Helios. Helios informs Demeter what happens and Demeter then partitions Zeus to intervene.

Zeus refuses to help and lets it slip he assisted by giving his permission for the abduction to place. In a blind rage Demeter refuses to let anything grow on earth until Persephone is returned to her, at that moment all the plants withered on earth. Some say Demeter wander the earth going madder and madder with grief.

During this time Persephone grow in to her role of wife and Queen of the Underworld although it is said that she missed her mother. While Persephone was in the Under world the Earth was racked with famine and Demeter’s grief continued to grow seeing this Zeus heart softened and he relented he summons Hermes and informs him that Persephone is commanded to return to her Mother.

Hermes then travels to the Underworld and informs Hades and Persephone of Zeus command. Knowing that no God or mortal can refuse a command from Zeus. So as she was leaving to return to her mother Hades offers her a pomegranate. Persephone new that if she ate any of the food from the underworld she would be bound to the Underworld and Not even Zeus could force her to leave, So she are 6 (some say 7 others 4 I like 6 as it make more sense) pomegranate seeds.

Hermes Knowing he could not complete his task and knowing that Zeus would be most upset that his commands where not completed. So he opens a negotiation between Demeter and Hades after what must have been a very difficult negotiation it is agreed that because Persephone did not eat the whole pomegranate that she could return to her mother for part of the time.

Some stories say the 4 months of winter while other say six months for myself I like the idea that she leaves in autumn and returns in spring, the trees drawing back in to the earth the earth slowly dying a way in time with Demeter’s lose and as time moves on Demeter grief increases just like any mother with their child away. Well until the mind set change from my babies going to be a way for x number of weeks to my babies back in x weeks. I often see the solstice as this point of change as it part of our nature soon as the solstice arrives people start saying x number weeks to spring.

As I start preparing for Imbolc my thoughts always focus on Persephone and that first daffodil just poking out of the ground heralding her arrival.

The abduction of Persephone is but one of the legends of Persephone and in each myth she is a kind and giving goddess. Persephone was willing to help Psyche pass Aphrodite’s tests so that Psyche could be reunited with her beloved husband she also helped Heracles (Hercules), loaning him Cerberus, the ferocious three-headed dog that guarded the entrance of the underworld, so that he could complete the Twelve Labours he’d been assigned to make retribution for the death of his wife.

Persephone is the keeper of dark knowledge and sometime is part of the triple goddess that includes Hecate as maiden, Persephone as bride and Demeter as crone sometimes called the Dark Demeter.

Winter Deities

winter 150x150 Winter DeitiesAs the year turn we move through the four seasons; spring filled with new hopes, and our thoughts turn to the maiden aspect of the Goddess, Summer and the time of warmth and love and our thought turn to mother aspect of the Goddess then Autumn the time of harvest and the crone aspect of the goddess and winter the time of death and rebirth and our thoughts turn to the dark aspect of the goddess.

Winter is a time of darkness, coldness and in older times fear of not surviving through this period. Amongst all of this harshness there is hope and this hope is found in the Yule festival the point where the darkness begins to turn back to light and we face the promise of better days.

Many of the deities associated with winter are also associated with death and rebirth in one form or another. While others deities are related to gift giving and hope of better days.

Here is a list of deities and legendry figures associated to the winter and the Yule festival.

Alcyone (Greek): A Greek demi-goddess, sometimes regarded as one of the Pleiades. More often she was thought of as the daughter of Aeolus and wife of Ceyx, son of Eosphorus and the king of Thessaly. They were very happy together, but then Ceyx perished in a shipwreck and Alcyone threw herself into the sea. Out of compassion, the gods changed them into the halcyon birds. Since Alcyone made her nest on the beach, and waves threatened to destroy it, Aeolus restrained his winds and made the waves be calm during seven days in each year, so she could lay her eggs. These became known as the “halcyon days”, when storms never occur. The halcyon became a symbol of tranquillity. (Ovid XI, 410). The name means something like “Queen who wards off (storms)”. Alcyone is the Kingfisher goddess. She nests every winter for two weeks, and while she does, the wild seas become calm and peaceful.

Ameratasu (Japan): In feudal Japan, worshippers celebrated the return of Ameratasu, the sun goddess, who slept in a cold, remote cave. When the other gods woke her with a loud celebration, she looked out of the cave and saw an image of herself in a mirror. The other gods convinced her to emerge from her seclusion and return sunlight to the universe.

Baldur (Norse): Baldur son of Odin is associated with the legend of the mistletoe. His mother, Frigga, honoured Baldur and asked all of nature to promise not to harm him. Unfortunately, in her haste, Frigga overlooked the mistletoe plant, so Loki – the resident trickster – took advantage of the opportunity and fooled Baldur’s blind twin, Hod, into killing him with a spear made of mistletoe. Baldur was later restored to life.

Bona Dea (Roman): Bona Dea (“the Good Goddess”) is a Roman fertility goddess, especially worshipped by the Roman matrons. She presided over both virginity and fertility in women. She is the daughter of the god Faunus and she herself is often called Fauna. This fertility goddess was worshipped in a secret temple on the Aventine hill in Rome, and only women were permitted to attend her rites. Her annual festival was held early in December.

Cailleach Bheur (Celtic): The Cailleach Bheur was a blue hag, said to frequent parts of the Scottish Highlands. Associated with winter, she was reborn on every All Hallows Eve and returned to bring the winter and the winter snows. She carried a magical staff, which froze the ground with every tap. She was also guardian to animals throughout the winter, and returned to the earth by turning to stone on Beltane Eve. In Scotland, she is also called Beira, the Queen of Winter. She is the hag aspect of the Triple Goddess, and rules the dark days between Samhain and Beltaine.

Demeter (Greek): Demeter is a daughter of Cronus and Rhea and sister of Zeus by whom she became the mother of Persephone. When Hades, lord of the underworld, abducted Persephone Demeter wandered the earth in search of her lost child. During this time the earth brought forth no grain. Finally Zeus sent Hermes to the underworld, ordering Hades to restore Persephone to her mother. However, before she left, Hades gave her a pomegranate (a common fertility symbol). When she ate from it, she was bound to spend a third of the year with her husband in the infernal regions. Only when her daughter is with her, Demeter lets things grow (summer). The dying and blossoming of nature was thus connected with Demeter.

Through her daughter, Persephone, Demeter is linked strongly to the changing of the seasons and is often connected to the image of the Dark Mother in winter.

Dionysus (Greek): A festival called Brumalia was held every December in honour of Dionysus and his fermented grape wine. The event proved so popular that the Romans adopted it as well in their celebrations of Bacchus.

Frau Holle (Norse): Frau Holle appears in many different forms in Scandinavian mythology and legend. She is associated with both the evergreen plants of the Yule season, and with snowfall, which is said to be Frau Holle shaking out her feathery mattresses.

Frigga (Norse): Frigga honored her son, Baldur, by asking all of nature not to harm him, but in her haste overlooked the mistletoe plant. Loki fooled Baldur’s blind twin, Hod, into killing him with a spear made of mistletoe but Odin later restored him to life. As thanks, Frigga declared that mistletoe must be regarded as a plant of love, rather than death.

Holly King (British/Celtic): The Holly King is a figure found in British tales and folklore. He is similar to the Green Man, the archetype of the forest. In modern Pagan religion, the Holly King battles the Oak King for supremacy throughout the year. At the winter solstice, the Holly King is defeated.

Horus (Egyptian): Horus was one of the solar deities of the ancient Egyptians. He rose and set every day, and is often associated with Nut, the sky god. Horus later became connected with another sun god, Ra.

La Befana (Italian): This character from Italian folklore is similar to St. Nicholas, in that she flies around delivering candy to well-behaved children in early January. She is depicted as an old woman on a broomstick, wearing a black shawl.

Lord of Misrule (British): The custom of appointing a Lord of Misrule to preside over winter holiday festivities actually has its roots in antiquity, during the Roman week of Saturnalia.

Mithras (Roman): Mithras was celebrated as part of a mystery religion in ancient Rome. He was a god of the sun, who was born around the time of the winter solstice and then experienced a resurrection around the spring equinox.

Odin (Norse): In some legends, Odin bestowed gifts at Yuletide upon his people, riding a magical flying horse across the sky. This legend may have combined with that of St. Nicholas to create the modern Santa Claus.

Saturn (Roman): Every December, the Romans threw a week-long celebration of debauchery and fun, called Saturnalia in honor of their agricultural god, Saturn. Roles were reversed, and slaves became the masters, at least temporarily. This is where the tradition of the Lord of Misrule originated.

Spider Woman (Hopi): Soyal is the Hopi festival of the winter solstice. cheap Propecia It honors the Spider Woman and the Hawk Maiden, and celebrates the sun’s victory over winter’s darkness.
