Where Magick come to life

The Pagan Degrees

Pentagram2 150x150 The Pagan DegreesThere are 5 basic pagan degrees, corresponding to the elemental path towards unity towards the Godhead. Adding to this is the neophyte degree, corresponding to the time the neo-pagan begins to study The Path until the time of his or her initiation. The circle is open to the neophyte but they may not participate in the Eucharist, initiations, or major festivals.

The 5 Degrees are –

First degree – Earth

Second Degree – Air

Third Degree – Fire

Forth Degree – Water

Fifth Degree – Akasha or Spirit

The degrees correspond with the four basic magickal types of man- the thinking, the feeling, the sensing and the intuitional.

  1. Thinking Man (Fire) this type classifies, analyses, synthesizes, argues from premise to conclusion, and traces the reason for this and that.
  2. Feeling Man (Water) This type also makes judgements, but in a totally different way. He is not concerned with reason, but with the values. The standard by which he / she measures us not logic but worth. “This I like” they say, “That I do not. This is good. This is bad. This is morally right. This is morally wrong”.
  3. Sensation Man (Earth) This type, like the intuitional type, works by perception, but works entirely in the field of facts, and nothing but facts. It (perception) sees what is and what is not. Its weakness is that it cannot conceive of any other way in which one may look at life.
  4. Intuitional Man (Air) This type, like the Sensation man, works by perception, but in this case the perception is of something beyond the facts – the imponderable, the intangible important impossibilities, the events beyond the horizon and the shape of things to come.

Spiritual Man is a man / woman who has mastered all facets of the other four aspects. It is true that within ourselves exist all these qualities, but it is the spiritual man who has brought them to the surface, and integrated them into his / her personality, able to command their usage at will.

There are colours assigned to the five degrees. Robes, cords, clothing at festivals and other coordinated items should be the colour of the degree. If black robes are chosen, and they are recommended because of general usage, then Lamens [1], and other items of accent, should be of the colour of the degree.

The Colours of the Degree

Earth – Yellow

Air – Blue

Fire – Red

Water – Silver

Spirit – Black or Indigo

The traditional Tattwa [2] symbols are associated with the degrees: Earth- Square, Air – Circle or Disc, Fire – Triangle, Water – Crescent (points up) and Spirit – Egg shaped.

During the time in the first degree, the pagan must learn what his / her life path is to be and how to keep themselves upon it. It is the degree of the purification of the mind and the body. He / she must set himself / herself on the road of self-understanding and correct all habits and faults that obstruct him /her from uniting with nature as represented in ritual. He / she must harmonise the qualities with in himself / herself so communication is possible with cosmic forces. This is no easy task. For many it is a period of introspection, and for this reason no time is set for the first degree. He / she is expected to know the mythology and to understand it inner meaning to himself / herself, but also to other as the myth apply to humanity as a whole.

Symbols and tools are to be understood, constructed, and used.

Much of the work described above is work that is directed to the inner self, and once the centres are open to power, the motion is set, and the inner self gains much from ritual and from greater outer universe using psychic methods removed from seemingly “actual” work. However, the path must first open directly by the worker, and it is to this that the first degree is dedicated.

[1]Lamen is a general term for a magical pendant worn around the neck so that it hangs upon the breast over the heart.

[2] Tattwa are geometric images From India. they are symbols that can be used in mandala.

Meditation to find your totem animal

witchcat 150x150 Meditation to find your totem animalYourself in a relaxed place sitting or lying and begin to focus on your breath. Create a circle around you for protection. Start by visualising the door and see yourself opening the door as the door opens you can see a beautiful country scene, you can see into the deep green grass the beautiful blue sky you can hear the birds singing and the sweet smell of summer hanging in the air. You notice all around you huge trees you stare up through the branches of trees so high that you can feel your neck hurting as you strain to see the top of the trees so you look down at the trunk of the trees and you notice a small door you notice that every tree at the door so you choose one you feel comfortable opening.

As you open the door you can see a spiral staircase which leads both to the top of the tree and a deep inside the Earth you choose to travel down deep into the earth as you descend make not of any smells, textures that catch your eye when you reach the bottom you’ll be faced with another door this time it’s made from animal skin as you pull back the fur you find yourself in a very very large cave just a short distance from you see a pile stones shaped like a seat walk over and sit down.

The Cavan is well lit off in the distance you can make how to shiny eyes as you sit there and watch you feel that you are being watched but you sit patiently. in the silence you can hear the animal moving and you feel it watching you ever begin to gain confidence it will move out shadows and move towards you you recognise this animal and you instantly feel a connection with it. Allow the animal to come to you once you and animals have made a physical connection spend sometime getting to know this totem it is very likely you will be able to communicate verbally.

Once you have spent some time communicating and getting to know your totem there will be a point when you will need to leave when you do you will need to retrace your journey but you will find that your totem will follow you out and from that point forward will remain with you. As you need it.

Don’t forget once finished remember to ground yourself and write up any notes

Samhain Ritual

630px Pentagram circle interlaced svg 150x1502 Samhain RitualPlace an apple and pomegranate upon the altar. There should also be a “planted” pot of earth for each participant – these may be arranged on the altar as well, if there is ample space. Instruments of divination may be placed within the Circle perimeter for use during the ritual if you wish. Arrange the altar as usual and decorate with Autumn leaves, pumpkins, etc.

The Circle is cast and purified the Circle in the usual manner. Dancing around the Circle in a shuffle step (deosil), all chant three times:

The Moon is bright, the Crone is old
The body lifeless – the bones so cold
We all live and pay our dues
To die in ones and threes and twos.

Death, dance and play the harp
Piercing silence in the dark
The Woman’s old with withered limbs
Death beckons Her to dance with Him

As She accepts the Dance of Death
The Earth is cooled by ghostly breath
To lie in dormancy once more
To have Her strength and life restored

Go to the Western Quarter and draw an invoking pentagram with the athame to open the gate. Then evoke the dead by saying:

All ye spirits who walk this night -
Hearken! Hearken to my call!
I bid you in our Circle join!
Enter! Enter – one and all!

Come ye, spirits of the dead:
Be ye spirit of plant or pet
Or human being who still roams!
Into this Circle you are let!

Speak to us of things unknown!
Lend your energies to this rite!
To speed your journey, we have joined
On this sacred Samhain night!

All ye spirits who walk this night -
Hearken! Hearken to my call!
I bid you in our Circle join!
Enter! Enter – one and all!

Bestow blessings upon the dead, saying:

Oh Mighty Pan of the Summerlands:
Guardian of the beloved dead
We pour forth love on those you keep
Safely, in your peaceful stead
We bless those who have walked the path
That someday, we as well, shall rove
We offer peace unto their souls
While resting in your arms, below

Now is the time for divination (Ouija Board, pendulum, cards, etc.) and communication with those who have gone on before us. Allow plenty of time for this. [Note: I have found that it is helpful to have a tape recorder handy within the Circle for recording any communications that may be "channeled" during this time. Some people disagree with this suggestion, saying that the metal of this electronic device causes scattered energies in the Circle; however, if the recorder has been cleansed and purified as the rest of the ritual tools, the problem seems to be resolved.]

When the divinatory processes are completed, the Priestess goes to the Western Quarter and draw the banishing pentagram, saying:

Blessings be upon thee, oh wondrous Spirits of the
Summerlands. We humbly thank thee for your presence in our
Circle and honor you in celebration this sacred night. We
beseech thee, oh Pan, keeper of the sacred dead, embrace
once again those souls within your keep and hold tightly
to your breast those which have been lost and wandering.
Grant them safe passage to the Summerland, where they may
rest peacefully in your strength until they are refreshed
and reborn again in perfect love. We bid thee all a fond
farewell. So mote it be!

The gate is now closed.

The Priestess goes to the altar and hold up the pomegranate, saying:

Behold the pomegranate, fruit of Life…

The athame is plunged into the pomegranate, splitting it open to display the seeds. She says:

Whose seeds lie in the dormancy of Death!

The Priestess eats one of the seeds, saying:

I Taste the seeds of Death.

The pomegranate is then passed hand to hand through the participants of the ritual, each eating a seed and saying to the next person:

“Taste the seeds of Death.”

The Priestess then holds up the apple, saying:

Behold the apple: fruit of wisdom, fruit of Death…

She then cuts the apple crosswise, saying:

Whose symbolism rewards us with life eternal!

She holds up the apple, displaying the inner pentagram, and says:

Behold the five-fold star – the promise of rebirth!

Consecrate the fruit and wine. Each person then tastes of the apple and sips the wine, saying to the next person:

Taste the fruit of rebirth and sip from the cup of wine of Life.

After libation, the Priestess presents each member of the group with a small pot of earth, planted with three seeds [preferably rue or lavender]. She briefly explains to the group that this is the season of the seed – it is a time of dormancy, but also a time of re-generation for growth. Further, as the seed rests in the earth, they should also take time to rest and re-evaluate their lives, metaphorically planting only those values which will enrich and enhance the growth within the Divine Self. She then instructs them to name the seeds within their pots with three values they wish to incorporate into their lives, knowing that as the seeds sprout with new life, their lives will be new, as well.

After the presentation, all join hands and hold them skyward.

PRIESTESS:

Thus is the Circle of Rebirth.
All pass from this life through the great god, Pan
But through My love you are all reborn
In the cycles of nature – through the Cosmic Plan.

In living we die – in dying we live
The fruit is first seed, yet seed comes from the fruit
In the mystery of life and death and rebirth
The Circle turns ever, and I am its root.

ALL RESPOND:

The Sun conceived in Darkness, cold
In the Shadow of Death, a Life unfolds
A shred of Light begins to burn
From Death comes Life – the Circle turns.

Dismiss Quarters and Dissolve Circle.

PRIESTESS:

The rite is ended.

ALL:

Merry meet and merry part and merry meet again!

Outdoor libation to the Lord and Lady, and the spirits of the dead.

By

Dorothy Morrison

This ritual was written at a time when I did not have a qualified Priest in my group. However, it may easily be adapted for those groups in which the Priestess and Priest work together. It may be just as easily adapted to solitary work.

Healing Basics of Oslac

thor2 Healing Basics of OslacWithin the Oslac path, Healing (hælan – to make whole) isn’t just about the body, but is a complete, holistic process. An individual takes responsibility for himself or herself by taking an active role concerning their well-being. This is in direct contrast to the moden attitude of abusing our bodies, then rushing off to a doctor for some ‘magic’ pill.

The 6 underlying aspects of health, as seen by the Oslac healer are as follows.

Strǔtian (to exert oneself) – exercise. Cardio-vascular, resistance and flexibility training should be a part of everyday life, as well as Rune Stancing and Wigráden (these are similar to martial arts)

Æt (food) – a healthy eating plan low in fats and refined sugars, high in carbs and moderate protein and ensure to drink 2-3 liters of water a day.

Geondđencan (contemplate) – Meditation is as important as the other two aspects. In Oslac meditation is a part of everyday life.

Hlinian (rest) – Sounds obvious, but enough rest is vital, sleep is necessary for mind and body. Meditation is o use in resting but sleep, however, is vital, Most people need around 6 to 8 hours a night.

Gedœlan (‘share) –Having someone to share the ups and downs of your life with is a preciouse gift. The expression ‘No man is an island’ is a valid one. The isolation of self can lead to all sorts of emotional problems. Love and laughter are powerful.

Gesundgedigan (healthy benefit) – i.e. Therapies, massage, acupressure, dancing, chanting and drumming, Galdor Stancing etc, are all-therapeutic they allow human expression, emotive interactions and relaxation.

There is a time and a place for everything, a balance to find and perpetuate, that promotes health and well being.

There is a time to feast and a time to fast. A time for companionship and a time to explore the pleasures of solitude. We need life to be full and active, but we also need rest and relaxation.

One example of this cycle of balance is the Lunar Cycle, Since the moon as an effect on us creating changes in our moods and feeling as the moon has an effect on the tides it also has an effect on us.

New Moon:- time of renewal , good time fast and detox

Waxing Moon:- the body strengthens and builds, weight gain can occur

Full Moon:- emothional time, bleeding may also take longer to stop.

Waning Moon:- Fast detox can be more effective,.

Tree Lore and the tree calendar

yggdrasil 221x300 Tree Lore and the tree calendarTrees have always played a great part in the lives of human beings, and in magic’s they represent the symbol of life regeneration and rebirth and to some said to contain sacred knowledge. Trees are used, from everything from a source to creating shelters heat and tools.

The wood from the trees has been also used as a sign of authority. Many kings and queens priests and priestesses would carry a staff of rowan , oak, Birch or beach. These trees were considered to be incarnations of the gods, and by carrying the staff would show others of their authority, and that their power was directed from the gods themselves.

The image of trees in the pagan in a neopagan faith has always been considered to be magical and the symbol of the tree is used to connect the three rounds (roots), the underworld, (trunk of tree). The earthly realm, and (the branches) the heavens and the worlds beyond.

It is even said that the phrase “ as above, so below” comes from trees, due to the fact that way trees grow their branches and roots seem to be of similar shape and size, the as above, refers to this almost identical shaping of roots and branches, whilst the so below, refers to the idea that whatever is created in the heavens manifests itself in the one of the major principles behind all kinds of magic.

The trees are also appeared in folklore and mythology as places where gods have sacrificed themselves or have been used to imprison or track, evil spirits. Trees are also said to be the homes of nature spirits, including those of Sylphs, fairies and Gnomes.

Trees have always been considered sacred in one form or another, although much of this is credited to Druids and the Celts; the Druids have gone on to develop tree magics most particularly in healing practices, and the art of divination. The ancient Celtic Ogham alphabets and the Celtic calendar has been standardised by Druids by allocating the 13 new moons four seasons and the winter solstice to 13 sacred trees. The Beth-luis-Nion calendar, which was reconstructed by Robert Graves (author of the book. The white) is a contemporary version of the ancient calendar and alphabet and was reconstructed from an ancient poem called the song of Amergin.

Starting at the winter solstice, the Beth-luis-Nion calendar has 13 lunar months, which starts and ends with a new moon with one extra day being added to the calendar for the winter solstice. Below is the Beth-luis-Nion three calendar.

It is impossible to check the authenticity of the Beth-luis-Nion calendar due to the fact that Druids. Do not write down information, and only ever passed information on already, although if Canada is a contemporary version it dance remained in line with modern Pagan practices and festivals. How I found my beautiful goddess

groups goddesses 150x150 How I found my beautiful goddess A candle is lit for many purposes; to enlighten a dark room; to provide a sense of warmth, to place by the altars in a church during mass, or on the mantle in remembrance of loved ones who passed away. Perhaps; to accompany an artist in his writings or the composition of its music, To inspire romance, or for some to just be there simply lit for no apparent reason.

How can something so simple as a candle, be so profound and special, How can a lit candle be an object of reverence, How can a lit candle invoke magickal powers?

For a witch a candle is more than a candle, the fire of the candle is life, it is the goddess herself, no matter what color, form or size, the witch invokes her goddess from the moment this candle is lit.

A witch learns about herself by the guiding light of the goddess, for that its warmth is the goddess love, its heat it’s the goddess heart in passion and will power, and the might of the fire is the goddess magicks, the energy of all that is. At least that is how it is for me.

It took me a while to find myself, I have spent years seeking guidance on reason, on doctrines and dogmas, I found my spirit held hostage of misbelieve, my heart crunched by manipulation, and a meaningless life full of depression, darkness and emptiness.

I’m not exactly sure how but I found my self urging to break the chains, to become a libertine of my own desires, to break free of all that I have planted in my head for so many years. I felt the need to shake it all off, within this need there was that moon, always staring at me, many nights I found my self sitting just watching the moon without any apparent reason.

Sometime; around two years ago, I fell in love perhaps hypnotized by that moon this love made me understand all possible emotions one can feel, the good ones, the hurtful ones, the painful choices, as well as; the happiness in the simple gestures of love. I also found an unacquainted love, which broke my heart, such a painful event almost cost me my sanity, my family, and my life. (I’m still dealing with the letting go part, but that is another chapter)

At the realization of this loss, the  goddess came to my rescue, I looked up, and there she was on that full moon, that night I felt an overwhelming urge to cry, and in all drama queeny sort of way fell on the grass, sobbing painfully with my face up to the sky, I’ve never cried like that before that nite, and at that exact moment on a summer night, there she came to me blowing gentle but steady breeze making me feel the warm loving sensation of a mothers caress consoling her daughter.

As I felt her I closed my eyes in awe, I stood up in belief and disbelief, immediately wiping my tears off I felt joy, I felt taken care of, I asked myself “ is this possible?” I felt the presence of a woman maybe the virgin Mary? Or  Maybe a spirit?, oh my I am going insane!!.

In the midst of my inner argument, the breeze paused, the clouds left the sky, and I felt joy, I saw mother moon  as full as it could be, in its brightness and I felt creation, life, the love of a mother, of a woman who has loved as I loved, who has suffered what I have suffered, my best friend, my confidant, I found My Goddess Divine.  I stood there in the middle of my backyard with wet cheeks, opened my arms, and from this divine inspiration I said “like god gives energy to the sun, like the sun gives light to the moon, like the moon gives light to earth, like earth gives life to my body, the sun light to my soul and the moon power to my spirit, let me be one with you oh mother divine”. Yeah, I know it was my first invocation so a bit amateur, but it was a genuine first attempt to connect to my goddess divine.

That night my life changed, although I knew that all my problems weren’t  solved,  I didn’t feel lonely anymore, I felt a sense of purpose and hope. I knew that I was being prepared for something I yet had to understand. While there is still so much to learn, I have found an inner power that is difficult to explain, but one thing I know is that as I grow stronger, all around me falls into place, I find myself in this state of awe, in peace, with a resilient heart that is no longer aching in damaging pain, I am still healing, and growing into my  goddess wisdom, preparing for that mission that in time will reveal itself.

I’ve learned in this short time that  to seek light and knowledge one must always remember, that there is a reason for everything, and the path to the goddess is as simple as breathing, the only catch is that we must be aware that there is a purpose, to accept it in humility, and become pure of heart, keeping a level of innocence and respect to  the power we are given, because it  is not for personal gain, we will receive what is due to us through the realization of the immense love from the goddess,  her teachings are sacred, our healing is the world’s healing, our mother can see us, she will guide us and discipline us,  she is with us, within us, with many names, maiden, mother, and crone, within the cycles of the moon, or within the life energy of the universe, in the core of the earth she is all that is.  May the goddess guide us through this purpose, in perfect love, perfect trust, and perfect harmony.  Brightest Blessings to all!!

Creation a Pagan View

creation Creation a Pagan ViewAs pagans we know that the Universe was created by the big bang and we accept the rules that science and the universe provides. We also understand that there is much more to learn about the universe, and ourselves both academically and spiritually.

We also accept that our understanding of the divine is in line with our current understanding of what the divine really is. And at the same time also know that once we pass this form we will gain a greater understanding and our journey will one day return us to the divine its self.

Like other belief systems pagans have their creation myths and stories but unlike other beliefs we treat them as stories often finding different stories to use at different festivals or feast days. Many of our stories have a link with the deities of their path or come from stories told by native tribal cultures such as the Native American Indians, aboriginals of Australia. Some stories are about the universe being formed other about the god or Goddess being created or how the earth was created.

Here are 2 of my favourite creation myths-

Before Time Was

Before time was, there was The One;
The One was all, and all was The One.

And the vast expanse known as the universe was The One,
all wise, all pervading, all powerful, eternally changing.

And space moved. The One molded energy into twin forms,
equal but opposite, fashioning the Goddess and God
from The One and of The One.

The Goddess and God stretched and gave thanks to The One,
but darkness surrounded them.
They were alone, solitary save for The One.

So they formed energy into gases and gases into suns
and planets and moons; They sprinkled the universe with whirling
globes and so all was given shape by the hands of the Goddess and God.

Light arose and the sky was illuminated by a billion suns.
The Goddess and God, satisfied by their works,
rejoiced and loved, and were one.

From their union sprang the seeds of all life,
and the human race so that we might achieve incarnation upon the Earth.

The Goddess chose the Moon as her symbol,
and the God the Sun as his to remind the inhabitants of Earth of their creators.

All are born, live, die and are reborn beneath the Moon and Sun;
All things come to pass thereunder, and all occurs
with the blessings of The One, the Goddess and God,
as has been the way of existence since before time was.

The Goddess Creation Story

Alone, awesome, complete within Herself, the Goddess, She whose name cannot be spoken, floated in the abyss of the outer darkness, before the beginning of all things. And as She looked into the curved mirror of black space, She saw by her own light her radiant reflection, and fell in love with it. She drew it forth by the power that was in Her and made love to Herself, and called Her “Miria, the Wonderful”.

Their ecstasy burst forth in the single song of all that is, was, or ever shall be, and with the song came motion, waves that poured outward and became all the spheres and circles of the worlds. The Goddess became filled with love, swollen with love, and She gave birth to a rain of bright spirits that filled the worlds and became all beings.

But in that great movement, Miria was swept away, and as She moved out from the Goddess She became more masculine. First, She became the Blue God, the gentle, laughing God of love. Then She became the Green One, vine-covered, rooted in the earth, the spirit of all growing things. At last She became the Horned God, the Hunter whose face is the ruddy sun and yet dark as Death. However, always desire draws Him back toward the Goddess, so that He circles Her eternally, seeking to return in love.

All began in love; all seeks to return to love. Love is the law, the teacher of wisdom, and the great revealers of mysteries.
