Book Review: Godcountry

Godcountry by Colleen Drippe Novel Books, Inc., 1591050022, $5.50 Eduardo Sabat was once a slave. Because he does not know the codes which will remove it, he still wears the shackle-like bracelet that once bound him to servitude in a pagan land, and which continues to remind him of his past. Though first instinct for a freed man would be to distance himself as far as possible from the place of slavery, it is not Eduardo’s instinct. Now a for-hire mercenary partnered with the hardy Otto Zeller, Eduardo willingly treks back into the desolate colony called Godcountry, motivated by the job but not entirely aware of the consequences. While the risks involved in returning to Godcountry are given, Eduardo is surprised by the attempts to foil his mission of returning the captured Hermadon Pelanot – son of the colony of Hithia’s leader – to the custody of his stern aunt. His estranged wife is mysteriously murdered, and soon attempts on his own life follow. Nevertheless, Eduardo presses onward with the help of a motley party which includes the devout Christian Wolfbane and a crew of interplanetary religious known as the Star Brothers, whose faith gives Eduardo something to ponder as he discovers the threat to his life is closer than he actually realizes. Godcountry is hard science fiction blended nicely with elements of faith and humanity. This story of a bleak future plagued by religious persecution and interplanetary greed bolstered through human slavery doesn’t offer an immediate resolution to any problems, but offers the reader

The magic of colour

colour-wood colour-wood

Amazingly colour has always fascinated me, not only in magical purposes, but also in design, psychology and science. So what is colour? Well in the most scientific answer I can give, colour is the by-product of the spectrum of light, and is reflected or absorbed and is received by the human eye and processed by the brain. The colour spectrum itself consists of visible light, which can be seen by the human eye and light frequencies that are out of the range of human vision this spectrum, ranging from infrared through to ultraviolet and consisting of seven other base colours which are red, orange, yellow, green, cyan, blue, violet, these seven colours are seeing rainbows, the colours of the seven chakras and contain the three primary colours, from which all colours are made. There are also non-colours. These are the sense and presence of colour, whites being the presence of colour and is created when the three primary colours are equal balance and we have black. The absence of colour. This is no colour or light waves are reflected or absorbed. Within Magic‘s and psychology and science. It is widely accepted that colour has an energy that can affect moods or environments, and we often attributed correspondences to these colours. When colours are used in magic. We attempt to harness the energies that correspond to our needs. We assign colour correspondences to candles symbols closed deities planets Zodiac signs. Days of the week we know from scientific tests that colours give us energy in the

The Goddess Lesson Three

Lesson three goddess school of eclectic witchcraft Lesson three goddess school of eclectic witchcraft

In lesson three we are going to cover the Goddess. If we can all agree on one basic statement during this section it will help in our understanding of the Goddess. Statement:- The Goddess is the female aspect, energy of the “Divine” in manifest or archetypal form in which we find understanding. The goddess is equal to the male aspect whether as opponent, reflection or opposite and no matter how we envisage the goddess “She” does exist. During this lesson I am not looking to change your view it’s designed to give you a broader view of the goddess. Throughout history the role of the Goddess has changed from the Great mother to a consult, betrayer and even demon. She has been portrayed in single form, triple form and part of pantheons. She has been given roles from creator to the great destroyer. The Goddess has many archetypal forms and just as many names. Now certain paths and religions either pay more attention to the goddess reducing the god aspect or pay more attention to the god aspect reducing the goddess role. Christianity (old and new testaments) has reduced the goddess in its belief structure to the lowest form of woman the betrayer, the slut, the murder, the demon with the highest accolades be the virgin mother (a title reduced from the original God barer which was thought to be wrong as this would make a woman the creator of gods) or a Saint Martyred for her beliefs. Wicca on the other hand has place

Getting on the right path

It takes many years (well for me it did) of searching and learning before you truly find your own true path. I was raised in a Christian environment and was baptised Catholic when I was eleven so I could attend a Catholic School. But the concept of a all-powerful male god just never fitted for me. I got interested in the Egyptian, Greek and Roman Gods The Idea that Gods had relationship, families and evolved from other forces made much more sense to me. Being a child I did not have access to books on magic or other paths so much had little knowledge of the possibilities that where out their for me. All I knew was that the Christian God was not enough for me he seemed so small and incapable of doing his job. I started to make up my own belief system it did involve spells, magick and the goddess. Although when I look back on it was a complete mess it contained circles from horror movies Cast in salt badly rhyming spells a [wikipedia]Christian[/wikipedia] god, [wikipedia]Mother Nature[/wikipedia] but it was my first steps. This continued over the next few years the circles changes to just plain circles the pointless spell casting stopped even calling the deities declined and I found that I could connect with the energy of the planet certain places made me feel powerful while others made me feel drained, people would also bring on these changes at the same time I was coming into puberty. With all my

How to Become A Witch in Nine Easy Lessons

In the 1980′s it was fashionable to be interested in the New Age. This is now a dreadful faux pas within the alternative scene, and in order to be accepted in the 1990′s metaphysical social set, one must have an interest in Witchcraft or Paganism. Of course, you don’t have to actually belong to a coven in order to be thought of as a Witch, you can bluff your way into being accepted as a fully fledged Witch simply by knowing a few terms and dressing accordingly. This brings us to… Rule # 1: Image is Everything. After all, what’s the good of being a Witch if nobody knows you are one? You must therefore wear black at all times. If possible, stay out of the sun until you become really pale, as this makes the effect even better. For women (and adventurous males) dark eyeliner and black nail polish can enhance this look. Also wear crystals and cheap occult paraphernalia at all times, and make sure that these are as gaudy and bizarre as possible, as this can only help your image. Wearing a pentacle around your neck is an absolutely necessary accessory – the bigger the better! Capes and cloaks are optional around town – it depends on how much of a visual impact you want to make, but either of these are also crucial apparel at any ritual or gathering that you may attend. Rule # 2: Name Dropping is Good. Every serious student of The Craft (and I’m talking here about

The Descent of the Goddess

In ancient times, our Lord, the Horned One, was (and still is) the Consoler, the Comforter. But men know him as the dread Lord of Shadows, lonely, stern, and just. But our Lady the Goddess would solve all mysteries, even the mystery of death; and so she journeyed to the Underworld. The Guardian of the Portals challenged her: “Strip off thy garments, lay aside thy jewels; for naught mayest thou bring with thee into this our land”. So she laid down garments and jewels, and was bound, as all living must be who seek to enter the realms of Death, the Mighty One. Such was her beauty that Death himself knelt, and laid his sword and crown at her feet, and kissed her feet, saying: “Blessed Be thy feet that have brought thee in these ways. Abide with me; but let me place my cold hands on thy heart.” And she replied: “I love thee not. Why dost thou cause all things that I love, and take delight in, to fade and die?” “Lady,” replied Death, “it is age and fate, against which I am helpless. Age causes all things to wither; but when men die at the end of time, I give them rest and peace and strength, so that they may return. But you, you are lovely. Return not, abide with me. But she answered: “I love thee not.” Then said Death: “An you receive not my hand on your heart, you must kneel to Death’s scourge.” “It is fate, better so,” she

How Spells Work

The first thing any spell or magick needs is a purpose or directs a desired out come. With that in mind then comes the ritual this may be done in or out side a sacred space depending on type of spell being cast. Spells may be in the form of a dance or acting out the desire outcome as in sympathetic magicks, or construction of potions or talismans or even by spoken rhythmic words in the form of Enchantments. The power of the word is very important magicks it is known that ancient god names when pronounced correctly imbue great power into a spell. The aim next is to raise enough energy to caused the desired effect this raising of energy will take many forms such as dancing singing, chanting and mental skills and tools and ingredient. Once the energy has been built to it maximum it is the release or directed to it goal. In Neo pagan and Wiccan groups spell casting is preformed in a magick circle at most coven meetings and although techniques vary the spell is normally written so everyone know what they are doing so that everyone energy is focused on the goal. The act of writing a spell help make it real by giving substance. During these spell casting the quarters would be call the deities invited participants will follow the script of the ritual which would be learned before hand. Singing, dancing, drums will all add to the ritual energy raising and once built the energy would be

Five common ways of raising Power

binding-love-spell binding-love-spell

Many rituals call for power to be raised without saying how. This isn’t a failure to notice on anyone’s part. Raising power is so personal that the idea of “telling” a person or a group of people how to do it seems ridiculous. Their seems to be 5 basic ways to raise energy / power these are by no means the only or the “right” ways to raise power. The Five are flexible, and can be used together in any number of combinations.! 1: Drumming: Drumming is fairly easy to understand. Most people use a “heart” beat, which they increase in speed and complexity as they raise the power. Your own heart rate can increase with the drum, it can be very powerful. It takes training for many of us to become that rhythmic, and the idea that EVERYONE needs to be banging on something for drumming to work is insane. I’ve seen many circles use only one drummer to raise power. Increasing speed and complexity are a common part of power raising, as more power is raised, and the air begins to tingle with expectation, one would have to work harder to not speed up, and they’d diminish their usefulness, so relax and let it go. When the power has reached it peak, the drummers stop, often voicing a monosyllable which pushes the power. “Ra, Ma, Ha, Ho, and Ay” all have special meanings in different Traditions, but research or spontaneity are equally as acceptable. 2: Dancing similar to drumming, dancing is something not

Evaluating the The Wiccan rede

The main rule wiccan adhere to is An’ it harm none, do what you will If we split this rule in it two component parts which are, “harm none” and “do what you want” This is often seen as an easy option against other belief systems which have many laws governing behaviour. But to be honest this is one of the most difficult rules to follow not just for myself but other pagans / wiccan ’s as well. The rule states “do what you want” which is very easy to understand it is what it is it means live free with out control but the first part is the killer “an it harm none”. When we review the harm none the most important word in none. The word none is refering to one self and the harm we can cause to our selves by, by drinking, smoking, driving, shopping in fact everything we do just by being here causes harm not only to ourselves others and the planet. The problem with this law is that it is impossible to life a life with causing some harm. But we should not forget the “Harm None” it is a good guide on how to live your life if we become aware of the harm we are doing we could learn to reduce the damage we done. So how can we reduce the damage we do. We have to look at ourselves learn to live healthier and stop the things that are harming you. Look around and really
