I am not sure when magicks where broken down in to black or white magicks and tell the truth I am not that interested as it seem to polarise magicks in to good and bad magicks.
Magicks by its self is a neutral tool and with any tool it can be used for any purpose. Magicks can as easliy be turned in to a weapons just as any tool can.
I think we colour magicks to give ourselfs the right to do what we want.
The idea that white magicks is pure and that black magicks are negative is such a stupid idea for those who have studied magicks and witchcraft. If we look at magicks, as a symbol the yin-yang is magick, on the white side there is a black dot and on the black side there is a white spot.
Even magick done for the purest of reasons will cause some harm, as magicks done for the darkest of reason will create some good. Anyone who understands the most basic principles of the hermitic rules will see that even on an atomic level the use of magick will always contain some unwanted result.
The one thing we must bare in mind with magicks and the unseen effects and consequences created from the use of spells. When i first started I would use magicks like their where no limited and it was free, and yes they are no limited but they are not free – with time everyone learns that lesson.
Magicks shold not be seen as black and white rather more as gray , ranging from very light to very dark. the lighter the grey the closer to spirit, the darker the grey the closer to darker human needs.. The use of magick to help others falls somewhere around the middle often in the darker greys.
I have a strong belief in karma and belief now! That magicks should not be used on against or for someone unless you are willing to understand that YOUR actions can and will have an effect.
I am not saying that you should give up magicks they are an important part of witchcraft and neo pagan paths and a great aid to personal and spiritual development I just feel that we need to not be reliant on magicks to solve problems. I have know many many witches and neo pagans in my life many of whom use magicks like it was going out of fashion, Someone is sick let do a healing spell, someone needs money let do a wealth spell what ever the problem the wand is out without forethought to the reasons the person is having these difficulties.
If someone is sick let look at the reasons why they are sick, will their illness that they are going through help them will it cause them to change their ways … the likelihood is that their illness will create a change in their life – if you use magicks to improve their health speed healing the lesson that they would of learned could be lost at worse or soften so the changes that they would of made don’t fully happen.
Often causing the person to have a illness that recurs or worse the change that they would of made don’t happen and they end up with something much worse as a result of your interference.
Sometimes the best action a witch can do is to do nothing even know that they have the power to bring about change through magicks. This does two things I allows the witch to see the outcome without magicks and the second and most important thing it teaches that with power come great responsibility know when to wield power is the greatest understanding any person can achieve.
Like all things in life there are times to use magicks and time to use wisdom it is the greatest goal for any witch to gain wisdom and understanding. As with all things wisdom takes a long time gain if you ever do.
Before using magicks think is their another way to solve your problems, is magicks needed or even required. What is the lesson that needs to be learned?

As you learn tarot by whatever means book, from a teacher or off the Internet you will find that you can either work with Tarot or not if you can then stop find another tool for divination that you are better suited to such as runes or crystal balls never force it. If you can work with tarot you are going to want to connect with them one a spiritual as well as personal level. Never read for yourself you will only ever see what you want to see and never use them as a magic eight ball to help you decide what to do. But do use them to help you become a better person and connect fully with the cards there are some excellent techniques to this in the Hallow quest the book that goes with Arthurian Tarot

It is important when connecting with tarot that you show respect and treat your cards well, Insure that when you pick your tarot pack that you choose a pack with imagery and symbology that you can connect to personally. If you’re a bit of a traditionalist then the Waite-Smith or Rider Waite Tarot, If you enjoy and have a big interest in the Arthurian legends then Arthurian Tarot By John & Caitlin Matthews or if you’re a gay man then the Gay Tarot, it does not matter what pack and there are hundreds to choose from just as long as it feels right to you.

Always keep your cards safe and protected, show them respect keep them in a tarot bag or tarot box or both. Keep them away from things that can charge them or drain them of their energy.

One of the easiest times to connect with tarot cards is when you first get a pack this first technique is used on a new tarot deck but can be also used to re energise a tarot deck.

When you first open the pack don’t shuffle or look at the cards place your dominant hand below the cards (normally your right hand) and your passive hand on top of the pack find your own internal energy (see playing with understanding and playing with energies) and place it in the centre of your chest around the position of you heart chakra. Allow it to grow and move down your right arm and push it through the cards and back up your left arm until it completes a circle of energy. Keep the energy moving in circular motion seeing your own energies clearing the cards of all negativities and filling the cards with your own energy.

As the cards become infused with your energy your own energy will be able to pass through the tarot deck with much more ease. You will know when the cards are completely clean of all negatives and are attuned to yourself, as the energy flowing through your arms and chest will stabilise into a continuous loop that has a steady pulse. Once you’re at this stage say an incantation or state that you want the cards to guide and show you all you need to know.

Then put the cards to one side and wash hand under running cold water to wash way any remaining negativity the follow instructs on pack or from book.

This next technique for connecting with the cards is an adaptation from the Hallow quest. Centre yourself then pick a tarot card from the tarot deck spend sometime looking at the design of the card the details do this until you can close your eyes and visualise the card as a real place with real people and real animal visualise your self walking around inside the cards talk to the people in the card find out what they are doing their, look behind trees and building look pass the image of the card find out what lie beyond or what is hidden when your ready to leave see the visualisation returning to a flat image then open your eyes and write you feelings and any information you gained. You will need to be very creative with this visualisation and allow yourself to just imagine.

The third way to connect with the tarot cards is a fun way by using the cards to tell a story and is not a new technique pick some cards at random from the pack I would say no more than 10 place the tarot cards in a pile next to you and start to write a story start with a lead person a knight a princess etc and turn a card over and incorporate that card into the story here is an example “Rodger the knight was walking when (turn card = the Hermit) he met a hermit that lived in the woods…” Just fill the stories with as much detail and feeling as you can imagine, and let yourself be inspired by the cards. Although many of your stories will not make it to the best seller list you should when you read them back you should be able to see a relation with your own life giving an insight to yourself.

Do’s

• Keep you cards in a safe place
• Use a Tarot Box or Bag
• Respect them as a tool of your work
• Find a pack that suits you

Don’ts

• Let anyone else use your cards
• Use them as game cards
• Don’t leave them lying around
• Read for yourself.
• Don’t let the cards make your choices for you.
• Don’t read for anyone under influence of drink or drugs

Are any reason that are stopping you from being open to love if there are then you should sort these out before hand. Eclectic witchcraft is a strange form of paganism as although their a few books on the subject these are often subjective based a persons own personal experiences. Unlike those who follow neo pagan paths such as Wicca, Oslac, Celtic Shamanism, druidic etc there is no one to say what you are doing is wrong! The Eclectic witch is someone who embodies the true heart of a pagan and natural magicks learning through books and experimentation creating a personal spiritual path.

The eclectic may be formally trained within one or more pagan path as I was but after many years of group practice may find that they need to find a more personal connection with the divine, one of the reasons the eclectic is a solitary path. The eclectic witch will often blend one or more paths ideologies and practices into a solid effective path, which will work for them alone. Most eclectic witches will often be Wiccan based and eclectic Wiccan’s now out number the Traditional Wiccan.

The eclectic witch focuses on witchcraft rather that ritual and rite – some may say that the eclectic is sloppy and had hock in their practice, but this is far from the truth. The eclectic learns to work on instinct combining magicks and daily life as part of the natural course.

For many neo pagan paths casting of circles / mystic plots and scared spaces is the only place where magicks are preformed for the eclectic this formality to magicks can become a barrier which stifles creativity and the magicks it self.

If you live with magicks as a major part of your daily existence then why create a circles / mystic plots and scared spaces to contain it???

The best way to look at the Eclectic witch is to understand the basic difference between Wicca and other neo pagan paths and witchcraft – Although Wiccan and other neo pagan path may draw from historical concepts of witchcraft they do not embody witchcraft in it true form. Wicca and other neo pagan paths are beliefs with rules and regulation governed by Elders. While witchcraft has been around since time immoral and has been called folk magic, ancestor worship, even goddess worship. It resides in cultural memory and encompasses a variety of methodologies, which enable its practitioners to produce changes in their world using the symbols of their choosing.

Many neo pagans will see the eclectic as a sort of poor relations or black sheep or even wild child working blindly with out structure. Often saying that the eclectic has chosen their path out of convenience for a single spiritual path or that it does not match historical evidence to support prescription drugs without the path. The fact that modern pagans try to recreate a version of witchcraft based of historical evidence and call it a belief is a smack in the face to our heritage – witchcraft is not about historical recreations through book learning it about learning through experience and understanding, which can only be gained truly connecting to oneself and the divine.

An eclectic witch like all pagans will find their path through personal discovery and guides, and studying the old and new ways – This does not mean that every eclectic witch is pagan I have know over my many years of Christians, Catholics and Jews who practice witchcraft along side their beliefs making them eclectic witches although they would never call themselves that.

So how does one be come an eclectic witch?

You must first start with yourself find out what is important to you and your world what inspires your heart in art /history /mythology and other subjects. You must connect with yourself and any mythology that you feel connected to. There will be a lot of trail and error (one of the reasons that the eclectic maybe formally trained in one or more path) find out what works and what does not. You have to also examine your ethics and understand why you are choosing this path.

Ethics of the Eclectic Witch.

The problems with ethics is a matter of personal nature so it can be difficult, no impossible to come up with a set of ethics that will suit all eclectics but hopefully good judgement and an awareness of consequences and abiding by the laws of the land and the divine will be at the heart of every eclectic witch. I know personal that the Wiccan “Do what you will but harm none” does not work for the eclectic neither does Crowleys “do what you want be the whole law” for myself I use my own personal credo “do the best with each action and if harm be done let it be done for the right reasons with divine blessing swiftly so healing can begin”.

Final thoughts

The eclectic witch does not choose to be eclectic it’s a process that takes many years of personal and spiritual development. Some solitary practitioners of other paths may not even realise that they are eclectic as over the years they have added and changed things from their path to suit a solitary existence.

Mind altering substances and practices have always been a part of paganism from the earliest of times, ancient pagan mixed herbs and plants for ingestion or application or even as incense.

These herbs and plants where used by priest, priestess, and shamans too help encourage visions or change their mental state so that they could directly contact the divine source, Higher spirits or spirits on who they could call on the aid in their works.

Many of these herbs and plants where hallucinogenic or have psychotropic properties. These mind-altering substances are used today as recreational drugs or as pharmaceutical drugs to treat illness.

The big question regarding drugs and legal or illegal in neo pagan paths is a matter of ethics. Although as part of reclaiming our heritage we have to understand that these herbs have benefits and a uses.

According to Carlos Castaneda in his books he spent the beginning of his training under Yaqui shaman Don Juan Matus using drugs so that he could learn what is was like to connect the forces and forms of the divine, he claims that the drugs where used just to shift his perception just enough so he could see, after he new what he was looking for drugs where no longer used as he could then reach the state of mind where he could recall the feelings and senses that he experience. He claims that each hallucinogenic induced session was like gaining the pieces of a map to the available natural spirits and powers and once the map was completed the hallucinogens where no longer need to see the pathways.

The oracle of Delphi who was one of the most famous and accurate Oracles is claimed to of gained her insights from hallucinogenic vapours, which emanated from the 2 faults under the temple. There is academical evidence to support the fact that the Oracle was tripping comes from a reported in Geology magazine, which reveals that two faults intersect directly below the Delphic temple and the study also found evidence of hallucinogenic gases rising from a nearby spring and preserved within the temple rock.

It is also claimed that the much of the witchcraft hysteria during the burning times could have been a result of ergot a fungus produced on Rye and other cereals which produces Ergotism in humans and animals.

The symptoms of Ergotism symptoms include painful seizures and spasms, diarrhoea, paresthesias, itching, headaches, nausea and vomiting as well as hallucinations similar to LSD. All these symptoms at the time would have been seen as bewitchments. It is also believed that the reason why many of the accounts of flying of to Sabbats and having orgies with the devil and demons share similar traits is due to the fact that a similar concoction was used similar to a flying ointment, Flying Ointment a highly dangerous concoction of poisonous plants which was mixed with fats and applied to the body and broomstick would give the ware power of flight, In experiments where these potions have been used researchers and have been tested on live subject whom in questioning on their experiences have expressed the feeling of flight or flying or of travelling also they experienced vivid feeling of sexual arousal (this is likely to be due to the fact that this ointment would be applied to or come in contact with the genitals). It was found that subject reports showed similarities to some confessions gained during the witchcraft trials.

Even today many tribal cultures where magicks still has a place in the day to day the shaman / shawoman or holy man or woman will often ingest herbs which will cause a psychotropic effect which when mixed with ritual and drum beat will help the sha-person or holy person reach a state where they are able to communicate with the spirits.

The states that are created when natural drugs (legal and illegal) are used can be recreated to some extent without the help drugs, Things like fasting, cord magicks and dancing to exhaustion can raise the spiritual conciseness to a higher plane in the same sense as drugs.

Drugs play a major part of modern witchcraft and the reclaiming of the traditions and before everyone goes all Mr Mackey (Drugs ‘R’ bad) they bring about change whether as mind altering substances or a healing cures and medicines or poisons. A good witch will know how sometimes by instinct, which plants, or mix of plants should be used for healing purposes.

It is very important for any pagan, neo pagan, witch, Wiccan or any one dealing with plants for healing and other purposed to understand the law and let deal only with natural drugs or what I consider to be a natural drug.

So lets start with natural drugs: what is a natural drug? It is a plant which only requires chopping, blending with other plants,being dried, boiled or burnt / heated to release it benefits an un Natural drug is something that has been chemically reproduced or is designed some drugs can fall into both categories.

Examples

Each country has its laws on drugs and no matter your views on drugs you will have to abide by that countries laws if you live or visit that country.

Since I live in the UK I will look at the law and it interpretations so let start with a definition:-

1. Drug

a. A substance used in the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of a disease or as a component of a medication.

b. Such a substance as recognized or defined by the U.S. Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.

2. A chemical substance, such as a narcotic or hallucinogen, that affects the central nervous system, causing changes in behaviour and often addiction

In the UK we have 2 laws that cover drugs the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 and The Medicines Act 1968 and without knowledge a witch can end up breaking the law and find themselves open to prosecution and a jail sentence. In the UK as far as the drug laws go there are huge loopholes, which can turn into a noose. Magic Mushrooms! There is not law preventing you picking them but dry them out and you could face 7 years in prison and a fine if you have too many your sentence could be life under the Misuse of Drugs act 1971 and with the same silliness you have a friend who is stress you say drink camomile tea nothing but say I would prescribe camomile tea in the morning and evening one cup when you wake and one before retiring you can face prosecution under the Medicines Act 1968.

When you deal with herbs plants etc for healing purposes you have an obligation not just to the people that visit you but also to your self to be aware of the law ignorance is not a get out.

I hope that this will encourage all you that read that plants have benefits as well as their flaws and the issues of drugs and magicks are not as simples as they seem.

The issue of drugs in the community has an impact on life and that is an issue that should hit every heart.

Changing the way we think

Our thoughts travel beyond the limitations of time and space. We can “pick up” other peoples thoughts, and by the same token they can “receive” ours. Telepathy is an extension of this inherent ability we have.

Out thoughts can create harmony, life our spirits and strengthen our life force. They may also be stuck in destructive patterns that create illness and sap our energy.

It takes many years (well for me it did) of searching and learning before you truly find your own true path.

I was raised in a Christian environment and was baptised Catholic when I was eleven so I could attend a Catholic School. But the concept of a all-powerful male god just never fitted for me. I got interested in the Egyptian, Greek and Roman Gods The Idea that Gods had relationship, families and evolved from other forces made much more sense to me.

Being a child I did not have access to books on magic or other paths so much had little knowledge of the possibilities that where out their for me. All I knew was that the Christian God was not enough for me he seemed so small and incapable of doing his job.

I started to make up my own belief system it did involve spells, magick and the goddess. Although when I look back on it was a complete mess it contained circles from horror movies Cast in salt badly rhyming spells a [wikipedia]Christian[/wikipedia] god, [wikipedia]Mother Nature[/wikipedia] but it was my first steps.

This continued over the next few years the circles changes to just plain circles the pointless spell casting stopped even calling the deities declined and I found that I could connect with the energy of the planet certain places made me feel powerful while others made me feel drained, people would also bring on these changes at the same time I was coming into puberty.

With all my biological changes and the growing awareness that my sexual tendencies where not normal (at the time I thought that) and a feeling of being an outsider I question all aspects of my life especially my beliefs I still kept reading books on [wikipedia]magick[/wikipedia] and [wikipedia]witchcraft[/wikipedia] the first book that influence was Complete Book of Witchcraft (Llewellyn’s Practical Magick) I worked through every lesson learning but still I was still alone a really had no idea what to call myself.

Then I can across the book that changed my life Power of the Witch – a Witch’s Guide to Her CraftIt where I first came across the word [wikipedia]Wicca[/wikipedia] and I final knew what I was and I declare myself [wikipedia]WITCH[/wikipedia]!.

Finally finding the word Wiccan gave me something to start looking for I then came across [wikipedia]The Pagan Federation[/wikipedia], which had so much information on paths and meetings. It gave me the opportunity to meet like-minded people so I started to attend the local moot and begin chatting to a few people who help become a Wiccan I learn the ways and finally ended up running my own group. Although I enjoyed working in and running a circle I much preferred working alone or with my partner who is northern tradition so about 15 years a going I went totally solitary.

If I were to give any advice about choosing your path I would say read as much find your local moot chat to people ask questions if possible find a circle that you find comfortable working a learn. Contact the pagan federation, look on line find sites that are about your desired path and keep notes. And the most important rule be true to your heart.

Much is written about the Yggdrasil, the world tree that supports the nine worlds on 3 levels of being. The concept of a central pole, pillar, tree that holds the cosmos together, dividing and connecting the heavens and the earth is found all over the world, in many cultures (totem poles, Chinese tree of life, the kabbalah, Yggdrasil, the Saxon Irminsul etc).

All of these can correlate to the human spine( the microcosm of the universes macrocosm).

Starting at the head (where Feorh is generated) and working down the spin to the lumbar area there are 24 vertebrae, equating to the runes Feoh to Doeg. The sacrum is composed of 5 bones fused together equating to the runes Ac to Ear, the coccyx 3 bones equating to the runes Calc to Stan. This gives us 32 runes. As the Sacrum and coccyx are fused together as a single entity they create the final (33^rd) rune; Gar. This gives us not 3 aetts but 4, the fourth aetts expanding on the meanings of the others.

By meditation on the rune corresponding to each vertebrate we can engage on internal energy work, moving up or down the spine to explore the runes and the worlds.

Always start at Midgarđ (9^th thoracic vertebra) and work up to Asgarđ (the skull) or down to Niflheim (between the 3^rd and 4^th sacral vertebra. About the level with the pubic bone at the front of the body). ALWAYS leave at Midgarđ too!! Working down the body draws in sky energies whilst working up the body draws in earth energies. Remember balance and harmony! As always ground your self afterward.

Although there are many very good rituals available on line and in books, it is the aim for many solitary witches to create their own rituals. So how do you start? There are two main types of ritual celebratory and magickal. Magickal rituals are rituals where the focus is magickal healing, spell working etc. While Celebratory rituals include the Sabbats and Esbats where the primary object is to celebrate the Gods life and relationships, their rituals that contain both celebratory and magickal elements but for the purpose we will just look at the two main types of ritual as once you have created a few rituals of your own you will soon find ways of combining celebratory and magickal rituals.

Celebratory rituals

Each pagan path will have special days not everyone follows the Wiccan wheel of the year. Start by finding out the reasons, symbols, mythologies and meanings of your feast days, there is plenty of information available online or from books, if it a lunar ritual find out the corresponding aspects are.

Magickal rituals

Each pagan path will have its own deity relating to a desired out, this may be in the form of a god/dess of a particular desire such a deity of healing or love. In monotheistic and duotheistic paths their will be a mythology in which the deity will have grated the desire showing that the deity has supreme power of that aspect of human life. So research what tools are appropriate to carry favour with the deity, will you be using creative visualisation, candle magick, potion brewing or kitchen witchcraft or poppets etc?

Once you feel you have all the information and equipment for your ritual you can start your preparation for your ritual. Since this format for creating a ritual can be used by both the solitary practitioner and by groups the following list contains information for both solitary and group rituals.

Preparing for the ritual

1.      Choose a time that is appropriate and convenient to perform your ritual, solitary practitioners should try to do thing within desired time frames with groups a little give and take on timings for celebratory rituals can be ok few days before or after the day but you know their coming up so try to plan for them, give your group members plenty of time where possible. There are occasions where emergency meetings for healing are needed at which times I would recommend you txt your group ask who is available to do a ritual for…who ever between x o’clock and y o’clock once you have the number do the research as above knowing that your going to have a short group it always handy to ask for some extra energy text your friends explain what has happen briefly “my friend has just had xyz and is in hospital keep my friend in your thoughts and send her some positive thoughts and your prayers” this will help when you direct and release the energy  the other positive energy will be attached to your energy to boost healing energy.

2.      Clear working space and clean it it’s your choice what method, duster and Hoover or a traditional besom broom sweeping east to west. Prepare altar if not already set up (not everyone has the room for a dedicated temple space).

3.      Be wary of your thoughts do not let your mind be come embroiled in negative thinking, avoid things that are likely to agitate your mind or the mind set of the group.

4.      Grounding and centring yourself or group. This is done about 15 minutes before you start your ritual, this is done by meditating on what your about to do and removing the mundane thought of daily life behind. Mythologies of the deity may also be read as a reminder of what can be achieved.

The Ritual itself.

This format is designed with different neo pagan paths in mind so fill free to amend what you need to match your path.

1. Create your sacred space, whether that is a mystic plot, magick circle or energy bubble always remember you’re creating a space where you can communicate with the deity/s.
2. Call forth your guardians whether This be a totem spirit, the watchtowers, the four elemental dragons, your ancestors names etc these guardians are called for several reason, to protect, bare witness, help direct and increase the energy that is released or even as keys required to gain access to the deity. The amount and type of guardians you have depends on your beliefs this can range form a single guardian to hundreds but the average is four based on the cardinal points of the compass and or the four elements (Earth, Air, Fire and Water)
3. The Libation this is interchangeable with the working some prefer to have the libation after working, the libation will normally take the form of food and drink, the food normal bread, cake or biscuits but could include meat or a stew depending on deity
4. The working this can come before libation the working will depend on what you have planned.
5. The closing of sacred space for this you will need to thank the deity/s in the appropriate fashion release and thank the guardians and finally draw the energy from the sacred space back. It is advice able to vocally end the rite by dismissing any higher beings attached by your energy a simple “to all those that bore witness this rite has now ended go in peace your presence is no longer required”
6. Grounding one of the most important aspects of any ritual is to ground your self there is still at lot of extra energy in your systems and if not dispersed correctly can make you unwell the best way to ground your self is to sit on the floor have some thing to eat small biscuit and let the excess energies flow back to the earth think of mundane things and let your self return to the day to day life.

Rituals can and are enhance with drumming, music, chanting, dancing reading poetry or mythologies related to your working as you write your ritual out you will know where to put these things. Keeping notes in your book of shadows, journals etc will help you develop these rituals to the point of perfection.
