The stoned witch and wasted wizard

drugs 150x150 The stoned witch and wasted wizard Mind altering substances and practices have always been a part of paganism from the earliest of times, ancient pagan mixed herbs and plants for ingestion or application or even as incense.

These herbs and plants where used by priest, priestess, and shamans too help encourage visions or change their mental state so that they could directly contact the divine source, Higher spirits or spirits on who they could call on the aid in their works.

Many of these herbs and plants where hallucinogenic or have psychotropic properties. These mind-altering substances are used today as recreational drugs or as pharmaceutical drugs to treat illness.

The big question regarding drugs and legal or illegal in neo pagan paths is a matter of ethics. Although as part of reclaiming our heritage we have to understand that these herbs have benefits and a uses.

According to Carlos Castaneda in his books he spent the beginning of his training under Yaqui shaman Don Juan Matus using drugs so that he could learn what is was like to connect the forces and forms of the divine, he claims that the drugs where used just to shift his perception just enough so he could see, after he new what he was looking for drugs where no longer used as he could then reach the state of mind where he could recall the feelings and senses that he experience. He claims that each hallucinogenic induced session was like gaining the pieces of a map to the available natural spirits and powers and once the map was completed the hallucinogens where no longer need to see the pathways.

The oracle of Delphi who was one of the most famous and accurate Oracles is claimed to of gained her insights from hallucinogenic vapours, which emanated from the 2 faults under the temple. There is academical evidence to support the fact that the Oracle was tripping comes from a reported in Geology magazine, which reveals that two faults intersect directly below the Delphic temple and the study also found evidence of hallucinogenic gases rising from a nearby spring and preserved within the temple rock.

It is also claimed that the much of the witchcraft hysteria during the burning times could have been a result of ergot a fungus produced on Rye and other cereals which produces Ergotism in humans and animals.

The symptoms of Ergotism symptoms include painful seizures and spasms, diarrhoea, paresthesias, itching, headaches, nausea and vomiting as well as hallucinations similar to LSD. All these symptoms at the time would have been seen as bewitchments. It is also believed that the reason why many of the accounts of flying of to Sabbats and having orgies with the devil and demons share similar traits is due to the fact that a similar concoction was used similar to a flying ointment, Flying Ointment a highly dangerous concoction of poisonous plants which was mixed with fats and applied to the body and broomstick would give the ware power of flight, In experiments where these potions have been used researchers and have been tested on live subject whom in questioning on their experiences have expressed the feeling of flight or flying or of travelling also they experienced vivid feeling of sexual arousal (this is likely to be due to the fact that this ointment would be applied to or come in contact with the genitals). It was found that subject reports showed similarities to some confessions gained during the witchcraft trials.

Even today many tribal cultures where magicks still has a place in the day to day the shaman / shawoman or holy man or woman will often ingest herbs which will cause a psychotropic effect which when mixed with ritual and drum beat will help the sha-person or holy person reach a state where they are able to communicate with the spirits.

The states that are created when natural drugs (legal and illegal) are used can be recreated to some extent without the help drugs, Things like fasting, cord magicks and dancing to exhaustion can raise the spiritual conciseness to a higher plane in the same sense as drugs.

Drugs play a major part of modern witchcraft and the reclaiming of the traditions and before everyone goes all Mr Mackey (Drugs ‘R’ bad) they bring about change whether as mind altering substances or a healing cures and medicines or poisons. A good witch will know how sometimes by instinct, which plants, or mix of plants should be used for healing purposes.

It is very important for any pagan, neo pagan, witch, Wiccan or any one dealing with plants for healing and other purposed to understand the law and let deal only with natural drugs or what I consider to be a natural drug.

So lets start with natural drugs: what is a natural drug? It is a plant which only requires chopping, blending with other plants, being dried, boiled or burnt / heated to release it benefits an un Natural drug is something that has been chemically reproduced or is designed some drugs can fall into both categories.

Examples

Name Natural version Unnatural version
Aspirin (legal) Willow bark Aspirin tablets
Cannabis (illegal) Cannabis herbal such as Weed, grass, sensi etc Cannabis resins such as soap bar, leb, rocky etc
nb. Legal issues if you prescribe a drug without correct legal right to do so will open you up to prosecution

Each country has its laws on drugs and no matter your views on drugs you will have to abide by that countries laws if you live or visit that country.

Since I live in the UK I will look at the law and it interpretations so let start with a definition:-

1. Drug

a. A substance used in the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of a disease or as a component of a medication.

b. Such a substance as recognized or defined by the U.S. Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.

2. A chemical substance, such as a narcotic or hallucinogen, that affects the central nervous system, causing changes in behaviour and often addiction

In the UK we have 2 laws that cover drugs the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 and The Medicines Act 1968 and without knowledge a witch can end up breaking the law and find themselves open to prosecution and a jail sentence. In the UK as far as the drug laws go there are huge loopholes, which can turn into a noose. Magic Mushrooms! There is not law preventing you picking them but dry them out and you could face 7 years in prison and a fine if you have too many your sentence could be life under the Misuse of Drugs act 1971 and with the same silliness you have a friend who is stress you say drink camomile tea nothing but say I would prescribe camomile tea in the morning and evening one cup when you wake and one before retiring you can face prosecution under the Medicines Act 1968.

When you deal with herbs plants etc for healing purposes you have an obligation not just to the people that visit you but also to your self to be aware of the law ignorance is not a get out.

I hope that this will encourage all you that read that plants have benefits as well as their flaws and the issues of drugs and magicks are not as simples as they seem.

The issue of drugs in the community has an impact on life and that is an issue that should hit every heart.

On a serious note if your casting a circle with a joint rather than a wand you have a problem! drug issues can effect everyone around you and the more you connect with a drug the less you connect with the magicks Carlos Castaneda explains this in his books.

If you need help or advice on drugs in a pagan life or daily lifecontact:-

Vibrational awareness

glinniekindred 150x150 Vibrational awarenessChanging the way we think

Our thoughts travel beyond the limitations of time and space. We can “pick up” other peoples thoughts, and by the same token they can “receive” ours. Telepathy is an extension of this inherent ability we have.

Out thoughts can create harmony, life our spirits and strengthen our life force. They may also be stuck in destructive patterns that create illness and sap our energy.

The thoughts we have and the words we say reflect our inner feelings, the way perceive life our basic beliefs. What we believe comes true for us.

We are not always consciously aware of the thoughts and messages we send to ourselves and others. By putting aside some time every day-to-day dream, do some art or craftwork, meditate, garden or walk, we watch the thoughts that come to the surface. Once we can see them we can choose to change them.

Positive affirmations encourage the growth of positive life affirming thoughts and beliefs. They are simple phrases constructed in the present tense and repeated to yourself as you meditate, walk, drive, garden or as you slip to sleep.

They initiate positive change from within and eventually a new thought pattern takes hold and become a new belief. This is then reflected in the messages we send ourselves and others, and creates a New possibilities for a new future.

The Runic Internal Energy system

yggdrasil 221x300 The Runic Internal Energy systemMuch is written about the Yggdrasil, the world tree that supports the nine worlds on 3 levels of being. The concept of a central pole, pillar, tree that holds the cosmos together, dividing and connecting the heavens and the earth is found all over the world, in many cultures (totem poles, Chinese tree of life, the kabbalah, Yggdrasil, the Saxon Irminsul etc).

All of these can correlate to the human spine( the microcosm of the universes macrocosm).

Starting at the head (where Feorh is generated) and working down the spin to the lumbar area there are 24 vertebrae, equating to the runes Feoh to Doeg. The sacrum is composed of 5 bones fused together equating to the runes Ac to Ear, the coccyx 3 bones equating to the runes Calc to Stan. This gives us 32 runes. As the Sacrum and coccyx are fused together as a single entity they create the final (33rd) rune; Gar. This gives us not 3 aetts but 4, the fourth aetts expanding on the meanings of the others.

By meditation on the rune corresponding to each vertebrate we can engage on internal energy work, moving up or down the spine to explore the runes and the worlds.

Always start at Midgarđ (9th thoracic vertebra) and work up to Asgarđ (the skull) or down to Niflheim (between the 3rd and 4th sacral vertebra. About the level with the pubic bone at the front of the body). ALWAYS leave at Midgarđ too!! Working down the body draws in sky energies whilst working up the body draws in earth energies. Remember balance and harmony! As always ground your self afterward.

Beginners Guide To Create a Ritual

OFFERING 150x150 Beginners Guide To Create a Ritual

Although there are many very good rituals available on line and in books, it is the aim for many solitary witches to create their own rituals. So how do you start? There are two main types of ritual celebratory and magickal. Magickal rituals are rituals where the focus is magickal healing, spell working etc. While Celebratory rituals include the Sabbats and Esbats where the primary object is to celebrate the Gods life and relationships, their rituals that contain both celebratory and magickal elements but for the purpose we will just look at the two main types of ritual as once you have created a few rituals of your own you will soon find ways of combining celebratory and magickal rituals.

Celebratory rituals

Each pagan path will have special days not everyone follows the Wiccan wheel of the year. Start by finding out the reasons, symbols, mythologies and meanings of your feast days, there is plenty of information available online or from books, if it a lunar ritual find out the corresponding aspects are.

Magickal rituals

Each pagan path will have its own deity relating to a desired out, this may be in the form of a god/dess of a particular desire such a deity of healing or love. In monotheistic and duotheistic paths their will be a mythology in which the deity will have grated the desire showing that the deity has supreme power of that aspect of human life. So research what tools are appropriate to carry favour with the deity, will you be using creative visualisation, candle magick, potion brewing or kitchen witchcraft or poppets etc?

Once you feel you have all the information and equipment for your ritual you can start your preparation for your ritual. Since this format for creating a ritual can be used by both the solitary practitioner and by groups the following list contains information for both solitary and group rituals.

Preparing for the ritual

1.      Choose a time that is appropriate and convenient to perform your ritual, solitary practitioners should try to do thing within desired time frames with groups a little give and take on timings for celebratory rituals can be ok few days before or after the day but you know their coming up so try to plan for them, give your group members plenty of time where possible. There are occasions where emergency meetings for healing are needed at which times I would recommend you txt your group ask who is available to do a ritual for…who ever between x o’clock and y o’clock once you have the number do the research as above knowing that your going to have a short group it always handy to ask for some extra energy text your friends explain what has happen briefly “my friend has just had xyz and is in hospital keep my friend in your thoughts and send her some positive thoughts and your prayers” this will help when you direct and release the energy  the other positive energy will be attached to your energy to boost healing energy.

2.      Clear working space and clean it it’s your choice what method, duster and Hoover or a traditional besom broom sweeping east to west. Prepare altar if not already set up (not everyone has the room for a dedicated temple space).

3.      Be wary of your thoughts do not let your mind be come embroiled in negative thinking, avoid things that are likely to agitate your mind or the mind set of the group.

4.      Grounding and centring yourself or group. This is done about 15 minutes before you start your ritual, this is done by meditating on what your about to do and removing the mundane thought of daily life behind. Mythologies of the deity may also be read as a reminder of what can be achieved.

The Ritual itself.

This format is designed with different neo pagan paths in mind so fill free to amend what you need to match your path.

  1. Create your sacred space, whether that is a mystic plot, magick circle or energy bubble always remember you’re creating a space where you can communicate with the deity/s.
  2. Call forth your guardians whether This be a totem spirit, the watchtowers, the four elemental dragons, your ancestors names etc these guardians are called for several reason, to protect, bare witness, help direct and increase the energy that is released or even as keys required to gain access to the deity. The amount and type of guardians you have depends on your beliefs this can range form a single guardian to hundreds but the average is four based on the cardinal points of the compass and or the four elements (Earth, Air, Fire and Water)
  3. The Libation this is interchangeable with the working some prefer to have the libation after working, the libation will normally take the form of food and drink, the food normal bread, cake or biscuits but could include meat or a stew depending on deity
  4. The working this can come before libation the working will depend on what you have planned.
  5. The closing of sacred space for this you will need to thank the deity/s in the appropriate fashion release and thank the guardians and finally draw the energy from the sacred space back. It is advice able to vocally end the rite by dismissing any higher beings attached by your energy a simple “to all those that bore witness this rite has now ended go in peace your presence is no longer required”
  6. Grounding one of the most important aspects of any ritual is to ground your self there is still at lot of extra energy in your systems and if not dispersed correctly can make you unwell the best way to ground your self is to sit on the floor have some thing to eat small biscuit and let the excess energies flow back to the earth think of mundane things and let your self return to the day to day life.

Rituals can and are enhance with drumming, music, chanting, dancing reading poetry or mythologies related to your working as you write your ritual out you will know where to put these things. Keeping notes in your book of shadows, journals etc will help you develop these rituals to the point of perfection.

Write it secrete

runes 150x150 Write it secrete { W722B946DRV4 }Since keeping a book of shadows has change from being a book of recipes created by families, which contained fokelaw and superstition to at it most extreme version ,  a digital diary containing spells and rituals.

During the Burning Times these books would be used as evidence of witchcraft so other forms of passing information on where developed. Information was passed on via oral stories and rhythms and pictures.

Codes where created to unlock these secrete and sadly many have been lost but that being said it as allowed neo pagan to find and develop new skills and rituals.

As part of the reclaiming of the old tradition some Neo Pagan paths will use a “Magickal Alphabet” these are ancient or made up alphabets which are used to hide information contained with in.

The Most common being Theban or  “the Witches alphabet” was created by Honorius in the 12th century as a way to encode other writing (likely Latin at the time).

The other alphabet that are common are Enochian is also referred to as Angelic Script and is used in ceremonial magick Legend has it that the magicians Edward Kelly and Dr. John Dee were given this language by an angel and Ogham which is an alphabet used by the Druids, and each letter corresponds to a sacred tree. And finally the best known of all ancient alphabets, runes which are also associated with divination. The alphabet is called the Futhark, Runic writings have been found throughout northern Europe and date mostly around the 11th century AD.

If your going to use a magickal alphabet then you need to be able to read and write in that alphabet it will take much practice to be able to form the letters accurately and does take a long time to master for that reason I have provided some free pagan fonts. What I personally do these days is type up my rituals on PC and once it has been spell checked Change the font to lets say Theban print and add to my book of shadows. Since these alphabets are available now at the click of mouse books of shadows can be translated with ease so there is no real good reason to use any alphabet other than the alphabet you us. The only reason to use magickal alphabets is to make your Book of shadows look more magickal, which in it own way is the best reason to use such alphabets if you feel that your book of shadow has magicks then it will have.

There is no reason why you can not create your own magickal alphabet I personally have one that me and my partner share which we use to send personal message to each other when we are apart, these alphabets can be used on the back of post cards so your message is only understood by sender and the intended recipient but also can be used to hide spells for magickal purposed such as talismans and amulets.

Whether you use a magickal alphabet or not it is always a good idea to be familiar with them knowing what they look like is a good idea.

Neo Paganism a history

pagan20pride 150x1504 Neo Paganism a historyPaganism is really an umbrella term, which covers many paths and traditions and often used in historical context, referring to Greco-Roman polytheism as well as the polytheistic traditions of Europe before Christianisation.
The term neopaganism is used to describe pagan paths, which have a strong link to magick, which seemed to emerge during the later part of the 1800’s and the early 1900’s with the most famous of these being Wicca.
But historical data shows that neopaganism was beginning to form as early as the renaissance (Florence 14th to the 17th century) were  the interest in science and magick was at its highest point.
With the rise in scientific developments and understanding which was feared by the church and more times or not would cause scientist to face charges of heresy and recant their findings.
During this time of scientific discovery and religious upheaval new spiritual ideas formed some using ancient pagan influences, others based on their understanding of science and how the universe worked to form understandings of the divine others giving up on the God, and purely relying on the self as a moral compass such as Humanism.
During the Renaissance, and the reintroduction of Classicism, which gave rise to an interest in Greco-Roman polytheism and Greco-Roman magick, which was practiced along side Renaissance magick helped to revive the philosophy of the pagan.
It is when we reach the Romantics (18th Century) that they re-discovery of Old Gaelic and Old Norse literature and poetry, which helped provide more about the pagan past of Europe. Giving rise to one of the earliest known neopagan paths Neo-druidism or neo-druidry, commonly referred to as Druidism or Druidry (1717).
It is only when we reach the end of the 18th and early 19th century do things start to move faster for the neopagan’s. During this time there is an increase interest in the occult. With more occult based groups starting to emerge into the public arena including the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and the Ordo Templi Orientis, which had it’s magickal practices rooted in Egyptian cosmology as well as the Kabbalah.
This interest in the occult was on such a rise that anything supernatural was in fashion, card readings, and mediums etc. Their where also social changes happening at the this time which may have been influenced from the writings of the romantics which focused on sexuality, feminism and pacifism which help the neopagan’s in their next step.
It was in the year 1920 when the historian Margate Murray theorised based on the evidence she had gained from studding the witch trials that she claimed that witchcraft religions existed underground and in secret and where still present today. It was in 1940 when Gerald Brousseau Gardner amateur anthropologist and archaeologist, writer, weaponry expert and occultist claimed to have been initiated by a witchcraft coven in the new forest.
It was Gerald Gardner who is seen as the father of Wicca and for developing the modern versions of witchcraft. Gerald Gardner formed his own coven the Bricket Wood coven were he initiated a number of women as priestess which included Doreen Valiente, Lois Bourne, Patricia Crowther and Eleanor Bone who went on to run their own covens and initiate new members who in time would hive off and create covens of their own.
From this original idea of witchcraft, Wicca when on to develop away from Gardner’s path into new if only slightly different paths creating 2 main pagan paths “Gardnerian” and “Alexandrian” Wicca and many other smaller traditions such as Gay Wicca, Dianic Wicca (women only) Celtic Wicca and Solitary Wicca the list goes on.
Across Europe there was also a rise in the interest in the occult especially in Germany and in Switzerland. There was a high rise in the use and development of runic magic and development in the area of Germanic mysticism. it was with the rise of Nazism when Germanic mysticism began to become absorbed into Nazi occultism. This hick up in Germanic mysticism would take years to recover from and even today there is still debate to whether Germanic mysticism is linked to the nazi’s.
It was during the 1960’s and 70’s when there was a re-emergence in Neo-druidism as well as the rise of Germanic Neopaganism and Ásatrú in the USA and in Iceland also at this time their was a rise in feminism which gave rise to Dianic Wicca and eclectic Wicca. Eclectic Wicca is a personal belief structure based on Wicca (sometimes very loosely) but may contain any number of pagan and religious ideologies.
During the late 1970’s and 1980′s a large number of books where published giving Wicca and other neo pagan paths a chance to educate and explain what they believed in, which in turn leads to a public interest in magick and healing,  Wicca, Dianic Wicca and Ásatrú are to name, but a few.
During this period many new ways of spiritual understanding became of interest, helping to develop new pagan paths. During the 1980’s and 90’s there was a rise in serious academic research and Reconstructionist Pagan traditions, which spore more neo pagan paths, and now with the emergence of the Internet and information being freely available neopaganism is again on the rise and creating new paths and traditions as time moves on the newest of this paths is the cyber pagan or cyber witch a pagan who finds all their information from the web and builds a tradition based on their findings a totally individual way of connecting with the divine.
Neopaganism is a growing spiritual belief and in the 21st century the more common paths of paganism have moved from the group to the individual and the personal understanding of the divine, which helps to create a singular and personal idea of the divine away from a ordered spiritual path which is built through a personal connection with the divine rather than through doctrine.
The basic rule is see the divine in the form you see it, worship in the way you feel is right, and live as purely as you can, each personal image of the divine force is personal, as your relationship with the divine, should you be lucky enough to find others that believe the way you do, then your path will grow if not die and fade this is natures way it never means you are wrong it just proves that your connection is totally pure and a personal one! No one has the right to say what you do is wrong.

The Horned God

hgd 150x1502 The Horned GodWicca as a religion is a duotheistic theological system, which has a goddess / the lady in triple aspect and a horned god / lord.
The name the horned god / lord comes from a pan-european witchcraft based cult and was brought to life in 1921 by Marharet Murray. There is no real evidence that the Horned god / lord has any true historical evidence of being a deity it his own right but is consider to be the god / lord of nature and the opposite and equal of the goddess / the lady.
We all understand that Wicca is a modern pagan path created by Gerald Gardner, Doreen Valiente and Robert Cochrane, in attempts to reclaim the traditions of the pagans of old and to reclaimed the traditions of witchcraft.
Wiccan’s understand that the god / lord forms are more that the divine, but agree that their archetypal forms are imagery use to understand the divine. The Horned god / lord is the personification of the life force energy in animals and the wild” and is associated with the wilderness, virility and the hunt and the carrier of the dead to the underworld.
Has Wicca has developed and grown in to different paths some paths have placed more empathise on the goddess / the lady leaving the god / lord as a less involved deity.
In Wicca the wheel of the year is divided into 8 sections marking the relationship of the god / lord and goddess / the lady.
In Wicca the god / lord seems harder to contact than the goddess / the lady and the Horn god / lord is portrayed as an intermediately between humans and Dryghtyn (Which is a impersonal diety similar to theTao of Taoism). And has many different name depending on which neo pagan path your following.
The horned god / lord has been studied by many pychologists as the Archityple of the male pyche. And since wicca knows where it stands in the terms of its limitation and in the terms of the the Horn god / lord things are a bit wolley, when it come to the understanding of the horned god / lord, and since I am wiccan trained even I can see that this article can be taken the wrong way.
My explaination for this is that at the time Gerald Gardner wanted to disempower the “god / lord” as the almighty , the one true god / lord and wanted to reclaim the feminine aspect of the divine in attempt to restore the balance as any true pagan does, for me Wicca and witchcraft are a part of life a universal balance based on the hermitic laws.
One of the first and mojor of shots of wicca is alexandrian wicca founded by Alex sanders The roll of the horned god / lord has changed from being the wild male aspect to a consult to the goddess / the lady.So when we take a closer look at the horned god / lord you can see that he is made up from influences from literature, historical gods and occult symbology. This Construct of the god / lord form is meant to contain the best and worst aspects of a man from his most gentle to most violent. To me the horned god / lord is the primal force that all the gods are created from or should I say the archetypal male god / lord forms, which all gods are created from. Since Gardner created or recreated Wicca since his understanding of female nature was limited he felt the need to explain more about the triple goddess / the lady than then the god / lord, many Wiccan paths /covens grow and off shoot as the off-shoots start new groups they take with them previous knowledge and new understanding that they have gained and I doubt that any group still follows the Gardner original Book of shadows to the letter if they do then they are not doing what wiccan’s buying drugs online should be doing they are not growing and learning.
Most images of the horned god / lord are related to Pan or Cernunnos both wild and loving gods.
The masculine energy That Gardner portrayed is an untameable spirit filled with sexual desire but also a father. Since I am not a psychologist and their have been a lot of studies by Jungian psychologist on the Horned god / lord I can only give my view of what the horned god / lord means to me as a Wiccan and a Witch the Horned god / lord referred to as the Lord is all male gods with out an aspect applied to them. Since now my path is not predominantly Wiccan, But Wiccan based during Sabbats I would call on the Horned god / lord (a god / lord with no name) as the god / lord-form but for spell working etc I would choose a god / lord whose archetypal form meets my requirements for the spell(etc for example spell work for understanding I would use mercury (from my lip to the god / lord ears and vice versa)).
To be a true Wiccan you have to understand that for each of us the god / lord will show a face and you have to name it and find your path but if you work in a group you will need a archetype god / lord and goddess / the lady form visualise on for successful magicks if you have confusion over god / lord and goddess / the lady for you need to study a little Jung as this will add insight to your understanding, but simple analogy a pack of cards contains many images and if you turn on card and see an image that image is part of a pack of cards alone it has no value apart form its face value the horned god / lord is the pack the card is the male deity of your choice.
