Goddess’s of death and rebirth

darkmoon 150x150 Goddess’s of death and rebirth Death is one of the most feared aspects of human existence and also inevitable. Every religious belief will have an aspect of rebirth or at least a sort of life after death. Whether that is a simple, your go to heaven or hell, the Elysian Fields; or Tartarus or more in-depth beliefs such as Karma and reincarnated, these are personal viewpoints and all are valid and part of your own mythologies reinforced by your beliefs and understandings.

When we look at the Goddess (and gods) of death or those connected to it the fall into several basic roles, The Ruler or the judge of the dead such as Hel (Norse), The guides Hecate (Greek) and those that return the dead to back to life such as Meng Po (Chinese).

The goddess’s of death are often depicted as crones or demons (Christian iconology) and are feared by many. Those that dedicate their lives to these goddess’s will often refer to their goddess as the Dark Mother. The dark mother is seen as a high honour as this is the mother who shows her love in a firm handed way, the disciplinarian, the one that see your potential and will not let you slip. But at the same time she offers such rewards and secretes of deeper magicks.

The dark mothers are difficult to petition due to the fact that they do not appear to those that they consider to be unworthy or whose offerings are considered not good enough. For those they considered worthy they will test and test and for those that pass great rewards are granted – and with great power comes great responsibility.

Since dark mothers are not that bothered with the use of darker magicks some of the unworthy can be consumed.

I can remember a young group started to work with Kali and to say the very least the group enjoyed some extra power for a while but the group wanted more and started to become darker and darker. For those that could see they where moving away from goddess and was becoming more like a cult but Kali was patient hoping that they would return so she could slap them back on the right path but they did not listen to her call so she hurt them removed their power and shattered the group to the four winds.

I am always reminded that the dark mother can love or devour her children as she chooses.  There is much to be feared about the dark mother her links to the graveyard, body parts, blood and darkness but these are human fears not spiritual. It only when we can confront and defeat our fears of old age and death, can we truly accept the dark mother into our lives.

The dark mother is associated with the Crone aspect and the dark moon (A dark moon describes the Moon during that time that it is invisible against the backdrop of the Sun in the sky. The duration of a dark moon is between 1.5 and 3.5 days, depending on the orientation of the Earth and Sun.) And samhaine and winter.

One of the most misunderstood aspects of the triple aspect goddess and often forgotten being that most pagan paths focus on celebrating the new moon (originally “new moon” referred to the crescent on the first night it is visible, one or two days after conjunction) and the full moon (moon phase information below).

For the exercise in this lesson write down what you feel about death write down all of the thing that you are scared of. You will find that your feeling are very normal once you have them try meditation on that fear confront it and defeat it if you can. You can also meditate on the dark mother in your path and see if you can communicate with her.

The Three Roads Ritual

HecateWheel The Three Roads RitualIn life we all face choices, some are easy some are hard; some we choose to make while others are thrust upon us. The ones that are thrust upon don’t come as a shock but do leave us feeling like what do we do next…

Now there are always options but sometime we just don’t see the opportunities to advance and find a brighter future. This is normal as we are just humans losing a job / girlfriend / boyfriend or a major change in you life can upset you “mental state” which can cause you to feel depressed and despondent I personally know that this can have an effect on you social and spiritual life.

I can understand why I have never written a specific ritual before to help find the way through this personal upheaval. But it about time I did so after announcing the future of Cyber Cauldron, which was something I need to do I as I could no longer ignore the plain fact that it was not working the way I hope.

I sat down and started working on the ritual through the process of writing I gained much insight as I tested each element of the ritual to see how it would go and fit with the full ritual now the ritual is complete I though I would share the ritual will take place on the next new moon 3rd April 2011 so If you wish to join in feel free.

(Stand for a moment and let the goddess respond)

Place your hand down at the side palms forward in the position of reception and say

I seek thee in order to honour you, to walk in your scared place, to be taught by you! Hail great mother! Hail divine teacher! Hail the barer of light! Hail the Guardian of the ways.

Praise be to the maiden! Praise be to the mother! Praise be to the Crone! And praise be to the cycle of life and death and of rebirth.

I ask you to continue to care for me, reminding me to be mindful of preserving your ways, and that I remain shielded in your honour and remain worthy of your blessings.

(lean forward place palms on the floor and face to the ground and say)

Great Mother Hecate I am your child your vessel! Open my ears so I may hear your words, open my mouth so I may speak your words and sing your praises, open my eyes so I may see your lessons, open my heart and feel my soul. I am your vessel.

(remain in this position until you feel warm and slowly pull your self up to a seated position.)

(light the white candle and say) Hecate great mother my past was bright but past,

(light the grey candle and say) my present is clouding and I am becoming unsure of where to tread.

(light the black candle and say) My future is unsure and I fear what lies ahead mother take my hand and show me the path I should tread.

Now put on some soft music and visualise the Hecate wheel use it as a Mandela until you reach a state of alter consciousness and allow the visions and impressions to come.

When you are ready to return to a normal state after you have gained the insight you require say

Great mother Hecate I thank you

(stand in the pentacle position and say)

You words and vision have filled me your wisdom has mingled with my soul Oh great mother I thank you may I never forget the lessons I have learnt.

Close the circle, thanking the goddess and releasing the quarters

Take offerings and place on the earth outside ground and write up results.

The Moon and her guises

moon phases 150x150 The Moon and her guises Lunar deities can be male or female and these deities can also change to become solar deities and vice versa. For me the moon is a visual representation of the female aspect of the Devine and not “The” or “A” goddess but all goddess’s: the total female aspect.
There are physical representations of “woman” in the moon cycle 29.53 days (29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes) very close to a woman menstrual cycle. Also the  [wikipedia]phases of the moon [/wikipedia] resembles the life cycles with in womanhood, aging,  [wikipedia]pregnancy [/wikipedia] and  [wikipedia]menopause [/wikipedia] and all aspects of life.
The Phase of the moon can also be attuned to the seasons and spell casting as well as your own life. It is a good idea to keep a moon diary and make note of your moods, your menstrual cycle or your own internal cycle.

Below is how I see the phases of the moon as a solitary practitioner I have to attune myself to myself for magickal working while groups attune to the group energy each group or person will have their own view of the moon and every single one is a correct view.
The New Moon
For me the new is the beginning and the end it contains all the hidden mysteries of woman and all the worst aspects of woman the side that when evoked is feared.
First Quarter
For me this aspect relates to the maiden aspect of the goddess because of the new possibilities and the sense of growth and understanding and the potential of new energy.
There is always a sense of silliness for me around this time for me, which I enjoy.
For me this phase of the moon relates to spring the hope of new beginnings, growing in strength, becoming fertile and this will reflect on what spell or rituals I plan to perform during the new moon.
In the first quarter I would cast spells for strengthening will power, health or financial situations.
Full Moon
For me the is very much the mother aspect of the goddess, each time I look on the full moon I can feel the smile of a loving mother watching over me. For me the full moon fills me with a sense that I am protected someone is always lighting my way, and my back is always covered.
For me this phase of the moon relates to the summer and transformations, relaxation, friendship, and taking some personal time. Personally I do not cast spells during the full moon unless there is an emergency but I do perform ritual where the focus is to gain understanding and patience and learn to accept the life that I have been given and that changes what will happens when it is right like a mother waiting to give birth it will happen when it meant to not before or after with whatever results are meant to be.
The last quarter.
This phase of the moon always reminds me of my mother in the last few years of her life. She had found her soul mate had a nice home and mellowed so much as a person and she had become friend and confidant but she still had a vicious side.

She was mother, stepmother and grandmother and dying with an understanding the she was passing away a crone.

This phase for me relates to autumn and the slow death of nature the weakening of the sun the whole winding down.

The rituals and spells I would perform in this phase would be spells or rituals to weaken or end things in healing ritual I would work to lessen the illness (NB; always work to weaken illness never symptoms, weaken or reducing symptoms can make the person worse as your spell will mask the illness).

The New Moon

And we are back to the new moon and in this phase I see the in a number of ways first I see the true crone stepping in to death I see the maiden and the mother I see all the contradiction, life and death, I see the eternity of unknown knowledge, the darkness of fear.

This phase to me is winter the thing that becomes hidden a time for withdrawal and darkness.

This would be the time to do protection spells; this would also be the time to perform darker magicks such as spells for personal gain, bindings or insuring that people get what is coming to them. If you do decide to work darker magicks beware the rule of three what you send out comes back threefold.

Honour the Goddess in all things and view the moon as a living photo of the mother gaze on it daily and connect with the moon as a huge power source of cosmic female energy and not as a living deity.

 The Moon and her guises

So You Want to Start a Coven

circle 150x150 So You Want to Start a CovenBefore you go a step further, take a good long look at your desires, motivation and skills. What role do you see yourself playing in this new group? “Ordinary” member? Democratic facilitator? High Priestess? And if the last — why do you want the job?

The title of High Priestess and Priestess are seductive, conjuring up exotic images of yourself in embroidered robes, a silver crescent (or horned helm) on your brow, adoring celebrants hanging on every word which drops from your lips…

Reality check. The robes will be stained with wine and candle wax soon enough, and not every word you speak is worth remembering. A coven leader’s job is mostly hard work between rituals and behind the scene. It is not always a good place to act out your fantasies, because the lives and well-being of others are involved, and what is flattering or enjoyable to you man not be in their best interest. So consider carefully.

If your prime motive is establishing a coven is to gain status and ego gratification, other people will quickly sense that. If they are intelligent, independent individuals, they will refuse to play Adoring Disciple to your Witch Queen impressions. They will disappear, and that vanishing act will be the last magick they do with you.

And if you do attract a group ready to be subservient Spear Carriers in your fantasy drama — well, do you really want to associate with that kind of personality? What are you going to do when you want someone strong around to help you or teach you, and next New Moon you look out upon a handful of Henry Milquetoasts and Frieda Handmaidens? If a person is willing to serve you, then they will also become dependent on you, drain your energy, and become disillusioned if you ever let down the Infallible Witch Queen mask for even a moment.

Some other not-so-great reasons for starting a coven: a) because it seems glamorous, exotic, and a little wicked; b) because it will shock your mother, or c) because you can endure your boring, flunkie job more easily if you get to go home and play Witch at night.

Some better reasons for setting up a coven, and even nomination yourself as High Priest/ess, include: a) you feel that you will be performing a useful job for yourself and others; b) you have enjoyed leadership roles in the past, and proven yourself capable; or c) you look forward to learning and growing in the role.

Even with the best motives in the world, you will still need to have — or quickly develop — a whole range of skills in order to handle a leadership role. If you are to be a facilitator of a study group, group process insights and skills are important. These include:

Gate keeping, or guiding discussion in such a way that everyone has an opportunity to express ideas and opinions;

Summarizing and clarifying;

Conflict resolution, or helping participants understand points of disagreement and find potential solutions, which respect everyone’s interests;

Moving the discussion toward consensus, or at any rate decision, by identifying diversions and refocusing attention on goals and priorities; and

Achieving closure smoothly when the essential work is completed, or an appropriate stopping place is reached.

In addition to group process skills, four other competencies necessary to the functioning of a coven are: ritual leadership, administration, teaching, and counseling. In a study group the last one may not be considered a necessary function, and the other three may be shared among all participants. But in a coven the leaders are expected to be fairly capable in all these areas, even if responsibilities are frequently shared or delegated. Let us look briefly at each.

Ritual leadership involves much more that reading invocations by candlelight. Leaders must understand the powers they intend to manipulate: how they are raised, channelled and grounded. They must be adept at designing rituals, which involve all the sensory modes. They should have a repertoire of songs and chants, dances and gestures or mudras, incense and oils, invocations and spells, visual effects and symbols, meditations and postures; and the skill to combine these in a powerful, focused pattern. They must have clarity of purpose and firm ethics. And they must understand timing: both where a given ritual fits in the cycles of the Moon, the Wheel of the Year, and the dance of the spheres, and how to pace the ritual once started, so that energy peaks and is channelled at the perfect moment. And they must understand the Laws of Magick, and the correspondences, and when ritual is appropriate and when it is not.

By administration, we refer to basic management practices necessary to any organization. These include apportioning work fairly, and following up on its progress; locating resources and obtaining them (information, money, supplies); fostering communications (by telephone, printed schedules, newsletters etc.); and keeping records (minutes, accounts, Witch Book entries, or ritual logbook). Someone or several someone’s has to collect the dues if any, buy the candles, chill the wine, and so forth.

Teaching is crucial to both covens and study groups. If only one person has any formal training or experience in magick, s/he should transmit that knowledge in a way, which respects the intuitions, re-emerging past life skills, and creativity of the others. If several participants have some knowledge in differing areas, they can all share the teaching role. If no one in the group has training and you are uncertain where to begin, they you may need to call on outside resources: informed and ethical priest/esses who can act as visiting faculty, or who are willing to offer guidance by telephone or correspondence. Much can be gleaned from books, or course — assuming you know which books are trustworthy and at the appropriate level — but there is no substitute for personal instruction for some things. Magick can be harmful if misused, and an experienced practitioner can help you avoid pitfalls as well as offering hints and techniques not found in the literature.

Counselling is a special role of the High Priest/ess. It is assumed that all members of a coven share concern for each other’s physical, mental, emotional and spiritual welfare, and are willing to help each other out in practical ways. However, coven leaders are expected to have a special ability to help coveners explore the roots of their personal problems and choose strategies and tactics to overcome them. This is not to suggest that one must be a trained psychoanalyst; but at the least, good listening skills, clear thinking and some insight into human nature are helpful. Often, magickal skills such as guided visualization, Tarot counselling and radiesthesia (pendulum work) are valuable tools as well.

Think carefully about your skills in these areas, as you have demonstrated them in other organizations. Ask acquaintances or co-workers, who can be trusted to give you a candid opinion, how they see you in some of these roles. Meditate, and decide what you really want for yourself in organizing the new group. Will you be content with being a catalyst and contact person — simply bringing people with a common interest together, then letting the group guide its destiny from that point on? Would you rather be a facilitator, either for the first months or permanently: a low-key discussion leader who enables the group to move forward with a minimum of misunderstanding and wasted energy? Or do you really want to be High Priestess — whatever that means to you — and serve as the guiding spirit and acknowledged leader of a coven? And if you do want that job, exactly how much authority and work do you envision as part of it? Some coven leaders want a great deal of power and control; others simply take an extra share of responsibility for setting up the rituals (whether or not they actually conduct the rites), and act as “magickal advisor” to less experienced members. Thus the High Priest/ess can be the centre around which the life of the coven revolves, or primarily an honorary title, or anything in between.

Ritual leadership involves much more that reading invocations by candlelight.

That is one area, which you will need to have crystal-clear in your own mind before the first meeting (of if you are flexible, at least be very clear that you are). You must also be clear as to your personal needs on other points: program emphasis, size, meeting schedule, finances, degree of secrecy, and affiliation with a tradition or network. You owe it to prospective members and to yourself to make your minimum requirements known from the outset: it can be disastrous to a group to discover that members have major disagreements on these points after you have been meeting for six months.

I don’t know where it came from or who wrote it, but anyone thinking of starting a Coven or any other type of Pagan group really needs to read this article and carefully think about what it says.

Ritual: In the circle, ground and center. Meditate on all preconceived ideas you have about the perfect partner. You might have a certain person in mind for romance. Release the thought of that person (it would be most unethical to work magick to make a certain person love you and will put you in jeopardy by the law of return). Release all notions of what your perfect lover will look like, or do for a career, or even sound like. These are externals, and if you cling to them you may overlook mate simple because your mind was focused on superficialities.

When your mind is clear and open, hold the candle of your favorite color; this represents you. Meditate and then speak aloud all the qualities and energies you are willing to bring to an intimate relationship, such as “honesty, and the daily expression of affection, and good humor even in difficult times, etc. Replace that candle on the altar and pick up the white one. This represents your ideal partner, whoever he or she may be. Speak aloud the essential qualities you desire in a mate, and ask Aphrodite to bring you together in this lifetime.

Then place the two candles in their holders at opposite ends of the alter. Draw a heart in the center with the red chalk, large enough for both candleholders. Each day thereafter, meditate on the perfect loving relationship for a few minutes, and move the two candles an inch closer together. If you started on a new moon, then by the full moon, the candles should be touching in the middle of the heart. When they meet, draw two more hearts around the first one, raise energy by singing your favorite love song, (or singing with a recording of it) and charge the candles.

So mote it be!
