Where Magick come to life

Hecates Supper

On the 13th day of each month it was traditional to provide a plate of food / offerings to the goddess Hecate. These offerings always presented of a plate and left at cross road a sacred place of the goddess Hecate. The offering would be a plate of food.. It was traditional to cook a meal containing the ingredince that would please the Goddess.
Hecate’s favourite offering would include, Eggs, Fish (or fish roe)(Red mullet taboo in must cults), Garlic, bread stuff, milk cheese, mushrooms, honey and cake. Other less common offering for the Hecate Supper would include household waste the heart of a black lamb, or dog or puppy.
Traditionally the feast or supper is prepared and taken to the cross roads and left at the statue of Hecate Tervia and then you would walk away without looking back, Hecate had many roles and just as many names The Hecate ,Tervia is the goddess of the three roads symbolised by crossroads. The three roads represent birth life and death and related to the midwife aspects of Hecate, her role as protector and goddess of the underworld. The Tervia was all a representation of communications we get the word trivia from Tervia. In Greece it was custom for women from different villages to meet at the Tervia to gossip and share information and news.
The special days for hecate are:- Jan and Aug 31st, Nov 16th & 30 and the day before the new moon any one can show Hecate honour by placing a small offering of food and partitioning for help.
Creating the Hecate Supper
I normal start with a recipe, which contains all or at least the ingredince that Hecate likes. I would then go of to pick or buy the ingredince, (if this is your first time creating a Hecate supper go and buy a small plate* from a charity shop (I suggest that you go to one for animals dogs if possible since the dog is scared to Hecate)).
I would then clean the kitchen and cleanse the space at this point the kitchen becomes off limits to any one else from this point. I would then put some music on and create a scared working space. I would then prepare the ingredince blessing them all and charging them as offerings. Once cooking is underway a glass of wine and clearing up sides and stuff should be cleared away (you should cleanse plate of any negativity wash in salt water then run under cold running water should be enough then bless with wine). Put The offering onplate (do not dish anyone else up) add small roll or bun covered in honey decorate with flowers.
I now I would walk down to crossroads and place plate by the side of the road and walk away not looking back go back and dish up dinner recalling the energy from the kitchen.
Now I have not always lived in the country with a very quite road that is 5 minutes walk from a crossroads so I had to come up with some ways of transporting food to crossroad when I lived in the centre of London the first thing is that the crossroads in London are very busy and you could look like a bit of a nutter putting a plate of dinner by the traffic lights so the first solution is to find a quite crossroads, local parks have paths that crisscross it easy to find a quite fork in the paths this works fine. So the next thing is food transport no matter when you live in a city there is always someone around so walking mile with a plate in your hands is not a comfortable feeling so place in a bag use a small plate even from a child’s tea set.
Visualising the Hecate Supper
When it is not practical to create a supper and get to the crossroads it is possible to visualise a feast on a plate and yourself walking to the crossroads you must remember to leave the feast and return the same way you came without looking back.

* plate size can be any size from child’s tea set size to a small saucer plate should be glass or china not plastic even a small wooden disk will do.

A Random thought to a spell

binding love spell 150x150 A Random thought to a spellMagicks cannot be taught as such! Magicks are not a subject! Or a specialty of any practice! It is a way of life, you live magick, and you breathe magick! You don’t need to call on magicks like you would call an old friend over at a party. But for those that know or feel that ritual is important, as this contains your use of it. As magicks uncontrolled can cause problems!

An example of uncontrolled magicks is in the young a dream becomes a wish, a wish becomes a spell and results happen. For very young children their dreams are small normally very small, from I want food to can i have a Barbie, so have very limited negative results, but as they grow as we all do our dreams become filled with doubt reinforcing our expectations, so very few of their dreams become wishes, so less become spells.

Some of our young are very talented in magicks and learn to use their skills, which again drop off when there are in their late teens early 20’s when life’s demands become a priority. Very few of these teens go straight to a magickal life unless they are exposed to magicks through the family or friends at a young age, they will often bounce around looking for answers to questions they do not know.

But when magicks become a part of your daily life your limits are endless magicks can open you up to endless possibilities.

For example when I thought about writing this (I was and still am having a bad day due to my illness) I was lighting a fire and my eye flicked to the black candle on the mantle and within a micro second a chant began in my head – “In this fire I do see the burning of my negativity”. Within a second I thought about carving my problems on the candle. I must make a note here I have been working on some healing spells for my condition if only to make myself better and before any one mentions personal gain they have been avoided as much as they can be.

Then as I thought well you can’t just scrape some words in to a half burn black candle that was only use to make the sconce look good and on a just lit coal fire, but also, as I thought this just Doesn’t feel right the magicks are not complete some things missing or maybe all that needed is to be open to the possibility that was all, that was required to achieve my goal!

Within a second I got the urge to write it down as I knew it needed more work, so i opened word, and began to jot my notes down, and went off to think! BTW the ritual begins the first moment you start thinking about it!!!!

Then my muse started whispering to me “share the basics” to which I thought was the basics of the chant and let others grab what they liked from our facebook page! so I started with a title “A Random thought to a spell” and i started to write… Not what I expected so in hindsight would like to have change the title but muse says NO!

Here are my original note:-

Black candle

Fire

Right what you see as negative

Throw in to fire and chant

In this fire I do see the burning of my negativity

What is Magick

bnw1 247x300 What is MagickMention magic to most people and they immediately start thinking about Wicked Witches, Wizards and Sorcerers conjuring up evil sounding spells and poisons from boiling bubbling cauldrons sat on blazing smoking fires. Others imagine comedians on stage with funny pointy hats and black and white wands. Still others think of Illusionists making people disappear then re-appear from boxes and other contrived stage props.

Since time immemorial magic has been used in witchcraft, and many myths and evil associations have been attributed to its use. Here I shall concentrate on magic and how it is perceived by witches of today. Not everybody agrees and there are many theories on the subject, so this is my theory, based on my opinion and my experiences. At the end of the day you shall have to form your own.

So what is magic really? (Or “magick” as those in the craft would term it). How, what, where and when should it be used? These are the questions I aim to answer here.

First let us destroy the myths of wizards throwing around lightening bolts doing battle with evil sorcerers, and all other such nonsense’s. Magick is a force utilising power, wisdom and knowledge. It is both more and less powerful than the ignorant can suppose. Magick can only be used to change the changeable, for instance – it can be used to cure a sickness but not to replace a lost limb. Magick is not a power to be used in place of our other powers, meaning those of our physical, mental or emotional abilities. Nor is it a crutch for the weak or an ego-boost for the inadequate. Magick is an art and skill unto itself. It needs to be learned then trained to develop, and that takes time and patience.

If we believe that everything and all originate from the same source, then the ability for using magick must be retained within us all. Magick then is a forgotten art passed down through aeons of reincarnations and it resides inside us all. Therefore magick is a skill that needs to be re-learned and trained if it’s to be used well, effectively and wisely.

In modern days magick is used not only in ritual ceremonies, but also on a daily bases during spiritual communication with the Goddess and God. It is used daily for healing purposes and perhaps more frequently for personal purposes like reducing negativity, protection and improving the self. It can also be used for many other purposes as determined by the individual while bearing in mind “The three fold law”.

Power

Magick in essence is the use and control of natural energies or power to produce and effect needed change. There are three basic sources of natural energy or power used: Personal Power, Earth Power and Divine Power.

Personal Power:

Is the life force that sustains us and protects our earthly existence. It’s the power that resides within our own bodies; some may call it “willpower”. As we go about our daily business we are constantly absorbing energy, be it from the sun during the day or the moon during the night or the food and drink we consume. This energy we store and release during movement, exercise, sex, and even through our emotional states. This we all do quite naturally.

In magick we learn to harness and arouse this personal power, infuse it with a particular purpose, release it and direct it towards it’s goal.

Earth Power:

Is the power that resides within our planet and its natural products.  Such things as: Stones, Trees, Wind, Fire, Water, Crystals, Oils and Scents. All these things and more possess unique powers and give out specific energies that can be harnessed and used during ritual and magick.

Hold a stone in the palm of your hand (receptive hand), concentrate on your hand and visualise the stone. Feel it’s force tingling? A crystal can be charged and then held against the forehead to clear up migraine or headaches with it’s healing properties. Like-wise herbs and oils can be charged then rubbed onto the body to effect internal changes. These are just a few examples of earth power and it’s uses.

Divine Power:

Is spiritual power, that which is charged and channelled by the Goddess and the God. Personal power and earth power are both manifestations of divine power. Divine power is the force of life, the source of everything, the power of the universe that created existence.

To use divine power the Goddess and God need to be invoked to bless the magick being prepared, this is normally done inside a properly constructed circle. For instance during ritual, personal power may be used to effect some personal change, then directed to the deities asking for a specific need to be met.

Other Associations

Magick is not just about the use of power; one cannot just stand up, call out to the Goddess and God and demand that magick be done – “So Be It”. A lot of work is involved in preparation for the use of magick. Once a need for the use of magick has been identified, careful consideration needs to be given to other associations if a successful outcome is to be achieved. Other associations cover such things as – Time, when should the magick be performed. Tools, which tools are best employed for the task. Then we need to consider co-ordinating – Colours, Candles, and Incense. All these influences when combined together increase the power and lend added effect to the spell or rite.

Magickal Days:

When planning magical workings, consideration needs to be given as to when the work needs to be performed for best effect. We need to ascertain the best time or day for when to perform it. Days have their own magickal associations, which are similar to and connected with the other tables. Thus creating harmony during ritual and generating increased power when all are working together. Days in general are associated with and influenced by the Sun and six of the Planets.

Tools:

As with most other religions, tools are used in Wicca to aid and enhance ritual worship. Tools have no powers within themselves save for that which we pass through them, though they do have powerful symbolic significance’s, which help us to focus our will and concentration. Tools are used to invoke deities, banish negativity, and direct our energies though touch and intention. Thus we need to know and understand the properties and symbolism of our tools in order to use them properly and correctly.

Candles:

Candles have long been used in association with magick, as indeed they have been adopted and used by many other religions for spiritual communication.

Candle magick is probably the oldest and simplest form of ritual magick still performed today. Ever since fire was discovered, the naked flame has been regarded as sacred. In ancient times lighted touches were used to invoke the Goddess and Gods. Today we symbolise those acts by utilising candles. The naked flame remains the finest and easiest means of focusing in on power and energy.

The use of differently coloured candles symbolises the nature of intent and ultimately can influence the outcome of a particular spell. Coloured candles are therefore used to pinpoint our focus on a particular deity or planetary association. We need to understand the colour properties and other associations of candles to make our magick work for best effect.

Colours:

Colour plays a powerful role in ritual Witchcraft and Magick. Colours are carefully considered and assigned to all aspects of spell making, ritual magick and festivals.

Colours have symbolic associations representing occult powers, and have their own energy frequencies that emanate specific influences. Careful consideration needs to be given to colour associations when used with Candles, Clothing, Symbols, Deities influences, Planetary influences, Causes and Effects, Zodiacal influences and Magickal Days.

Incense:

Incense like candles have long had associations with magick, and like candles are used commonly by many other religions. The use of incense in witchcraft is threefold:

(1) It conditions the mind by stimulating our senses of smell.

(2) In connection with spells, it draws down the spirits through its magickal association with the elements of Air.

(3) According to ancient beliefs, when a spell is done. It raises the spell up into the ether and sends it on its way.

In magick, the type of incense used needs to correspond with the nature of the spell being worked. Most spells require incense associated with a particular planet or deity. Many types of incense are used for their purification and cleansing properties during ritual.

There are of course other associations and considerations I haven’t mentioned. These include zodiacal associations and planetary associations; even hourly associations can have an effect. But then how far would you wish to take it? Like anything else you can go overboard. Consider that by trying to include everything in your preparation, would you ever have time for the actual working? It’s often been said that the most effective magick is simple magick. Leave the complicated stuff for the adept’s or until such time as you have been trained and gained considerable experience.

Magick then is a process in which we work closely and in harmony with the divine power source. This is envisaged as the Goddess and God with whom we communicate through the use of earth power and personal power. Magick begins within us. By learning to harness and control our personal power, so then can we use magick to produce and affect needed change for others and ourselves.

The Mind

Magick begins within us, its already there, an intuitive knowledge and instinctive ability passed down to us through aeons of regenerated reincarnations, it sits there deep in the back of the mind waiting to be used. The mind needs to be trained in the techniques of meditation, visualisation, concentration and imagination if once again we desire to use these forgotten abilities.

Meditation:

Given the pace of life in society today and the stresses and worries that go with it, it’s difficult for most of us to gain relief and let go of our cares and woes. Meditation is one way to induce total relaxation and normally precedes any act of magick or ritual. Let’s face it; we cannot begin to work with magick, which requires our full concentration, if we are worried about mundane everyday things. Meditation is also the quiet time in which we release our hold on the conscious mind and confront our inner-self, or through our psychic awareness communicate with the deities.

Choose your time and place with care, ideally somewhere peaceful and quiet, and where you won’t be disturbed. Perhaps the last thing at night after all has gone to bed, or early in the morning before the household arises. Light a candle in a darkened room (White or blue symbolises spirituality and meditation, and burn appropriate incense if you wish (Lotus, Myrrh or Passionflower may help but use what feels right for you. Sit comfortably in a chair and take a moment to savour your surroundings, the lighted candle glowing softly in the darkness, the scent of the incense stimulating the senses, feel and listen to the peace and quiet.

Relax as much as you can, empty the mind and think of nothing, breathe deeply in through the nose and out through the mouth, gradually your breathing rate will slow down. For those who haven’t tried this exercise before, care needs to be taken at this stage in case you fall asleep. If you feel sleep coming on, snap out of it and start again. As your breathing rate slows down and while inhaling, use your imagination to visualise incoming peace and tranquillity, while exhaling, visualise your hate, anger, tensions and worries leaving the body and dispersing. Feel yourself relaxing more into the chair.

Now we can open up the conscious mind allowing it to become receptive and alert. Your psychic mind will also open and awareness will grow each time you practice. Call out to the Gods and talk with them, discus your troubles and ask for advice, or look into yourself and see what you can find. Once you have finished meditating, it might be a good idea to record your findings, the thoughts, images and sensations you experienced, so you can pick up on it again the next time you practice.

Visualisation:

Is probably the most important aspect of any magickal working. Its what we use to guide and direct the power and energy raised during ritual and while using magick. We all have the ability to visualise, but most people do so randomly. Perhaps when sitting in the car while stuck in a traffic jam, the mind takes flight and begins to wonder? Or when sat in a classroom during a boring lecture, we might start thinking about favourite things, seeing them in our minds eye while the teacher drones on in the background? This is random visualisation.

For use in magick we need to train and control this ability, so that we can see, hold and shape whatever it is we want to see, and then direct our powers and energies towards it. For instance I may want to protect my home from intruders. In which case I would raise personal power while holding an image of the home in my mind, then visualise an energy field encircling the house sealing the doors and windows. Outside the house I may imagine the police apprehending intruders. I then direct my raised power and energise the visualisation, thus bringing it into manifestation and leaving the protection in place to work its magick.

This then is the art of visualisation control, the ability to see in the mind what isn’t there, to hold a non-existent image or happening and shaping it into being what you want it to be. Visualisation is not “the power” or “the energy”, nor does it create it on its own, more that it directs raised power and energy to its final conclusion.

Training:

Visualisation in itself may sound easy and it is while sat in a chair in a relaxed state of mind. But visualising is only part of the process of working magick. The difficult part is to retain your visualisation with your eyes open, stood in the centre of your circle with your hands and mind occupied in manipulating your tools and other tasks. It takes a little training and practise to perfect this technique.

You could start by incorporating a few simple exercises into your daily meditation practise. While still in your relaxed state with your eyes closed, visualise a still object, something familiar to you like an apple, a toothbrush, or something equally simple. Hold the image as long as you can, allow nothing else to interfere, and then let it go. When you can hold the image without interruption for five minutes, try the same exercise but with your eyes open. This is a little harder but practise daily and it will come.

Once you’ve accomplished this, we start again. Visualise the same image, only this time play with it. Turn it around, see it grow or expand, maybe change its colours and textures, or try to see it from different angles. When you can do this, try it again but with your eyes open. As you become more proficient, you might want to incorporate it into your active life, try doing it while occupied with mundane things, like when cooking dinner or washing up afterwards. See how long you can hold the image in your mind’s eye while washing the plates and dishes.

The final exercise is to visualise a non-existent image or something you have never seen before. Use your imagination to create something, something meaningful to you perhaps. I use a silver white unicorn with wings, riding down a sunbeam into a picturesque forest glade. Whatever you use, see it as a real thing in your mind, make it so real you could almost touch and feel it. Hold the image as long as you can, then let it go.

As with the other exercises, we need to be able to see the same image with our eyes open and while occupied with other things. When you can do this, you’re well on your way to using magick.

The Self (Grounding and Centering).

Finally a note of caution to anyone new to using magick. Magick begins within the self. Its already there in the back of the mind where it’s tied up with our energy and mental facilities. When working with magick you can be working with some powerful energy and forces. Repeated or excessive use of magick without proper care and attention to the self, depletes the self’s resources and can lead to debilitating personal health difficulties, such as mental exhaustion, headaches and migraines etc.

To combat these difficulties, witches use a technique called “Grounding and Centering”. Before any ritual, magical working or divinatory activity, a witch will first ‘Ground and Center’ to booster the self’s resources by infusing ‘Personal Power’ with ‘Earth Power’ using the techniques already mentioned above. This technique can also be used to calm fear, anxiety and agitation.

To do this, plant your feet firmly on the ground (some people prefer to do this bare footed, standing on bare earth or grass, but it can also be done seated and regardless of where one is or how one is dressed). Close your eyes, blank your mind and steady yourself. Inhale a slow deep breath and release it slowly while visualizing any retained negative energy or influences flowing out of the body through your feet and dispersing harmlessly into the ground. Inhale again while visualizing positive ‘Earth’ energy being drawn up into the body through the feet. Repeat this process until you feel that all your negativity has been released and the incoming energy has touch and infused all your body’s chakra points (these are the seven zones within the body that retain energy, the subject of another lesson, but later). You should now be feeling calm and energized to commence with your magical workings.

Once the rite or working is complete, repeat this exercise to disperse any residual energy. Most witches then follow up with a ‘Cake and Ale’ ritual, food and drink to replace and replenish spent energy.

Once your work is done and all is completed, a period of self-analyses should follow. Carefully monitor the subject of your magic and record your experiences in your ‘Book of Shadows’. This will provide you valuable information for future workings.

Drawing down the moon

blue moon 150x150 Drawing down the moonAll ye assembled at mine shrine, Mother Darksome and Divine.

Mine the Scourge and mine the Kiss, Here I charge you in this sign.

All you assembled in my sight, Bow before my spirit bright.

Aphrodite, Arianhod, Lover of the Horned God.

Mighty Queen of Witchery and night,

Morgan, Erione, Nisene, Diana, Bridgid, Melusine,

Am I named of old by men, Artemis and Cerridwen,

Hell’s dark mistress, Heaven’s Queen.

Ye who ask of me a rune, Or would ask of me a boon,

Meet me in some secret glade, Dancing round in greenwood shade.

By the light of the Full Moon.

In a place wild and lone, Dance about mine altar stone,

Work my holy mystery, Ye who are feign to sorcery.

I bring ye secrets yet unknown.

No more shall ye know slavery, who give true worship unto me.

Ye who tread my round on Sabbat night,

come ye naked to my rite, in token that ye be really free.

I teach ye the mystery of rebirth, work ye my mysteries in mirth.

Heart joined to heart and lip to lip,

five are the points of fellowship,

that bring ye ecstasy on earth,

for I am the circle of rebirth.

I ask no sacrifice, but do vow,

no other Law but love I know,

By naught but love may I be known.

All things living are mine own,

from me they come, to me they go.

I invoke Thee and call upon Thee Mighty Mothers of us all.

Bringer of Fruitfulness by seed and by root.

I invoke Thee by stem and bud.

I invoke Thee by life and love

and call upon Thee to descend into the body

of this Thy Priestess and Servant.

Hear with her ears, speak with her tongue,

touch with her hands, kiss with her lips,

that thy servants may be fulfilled.

The Yule Log

yule log The Yule LogThe element of fire has always paid a large part in pagan ritual so it is not uncommon to find bonfires in pagan history. But the Yule log is a strange tradition goes as far back as Egypt 5000 BC were logs where burnt in death rituals and to honour Horus, their sun god.

There is no definitive tradition or history to say when and where it comes from and some even say that the Yule log had no religious significance, and was instead simply a festive decoration with practical uses.

In the UK there was no account of any folk tradition using a log as special significance until around the 17th century giving rise to the idea that the Yule log was and import from Europe. Historical it is believed that the Yule log origins lie in Germanic or Norse Paganism (pre Christianity)

The Yule log was a whole tree original which was selected for it size and to insure warmth and comfort. In Europe some traditions place the large log in the hearth with the rest of the tree pointing in to the room. Over the years the Yule log has been reduced in size from a tree to an average size log.

The Yule log morphed into a Christian tradition and became associated with the 12 days of Christmas. The tradition of the Yule log virtually died out during the 20th century but was replaced with the Bûche de Noël a chocolate covered Swiss roll decorated to look like a log.

Yule Log Traditions.

The first account of the Yule in England was from Robert Herrick, a clergyman. He claims that the Christmas log was a symbol of prosperity and protection from evil. He said that the log was carried to the farmhouse by men and as reward would be offered beer. The log would be lit using a piece from the pervious year Christmas log and all the remnants of the fire would be collected and kept to insure protection for the coming year.

In Celtic Britain and Gaelic Europe a large log or tree was anointed with salt, holly, wine and evergreens. And was by lit a young girls or a mother. the remnants where kept to light the next year’s log. Some put it to one side of the hearth, burning it for days, even the whole year. The ashes were highly prized – apparent protection against evil and lightning. Birch, oak, willow and holly woods were most often used.

In modern times probably due to the fact there are not so many working open fires the Yule log has become a simple decorated log with a symbolic candle to represent the lighting of the Yule log these are often used as table decorations. These Yule logs are normally made or brought pre-made.  To make one you need a log 14 to 18 inches and a hot glue gun and a candle and decorations such as Pinecones, Dried berries, such as cranberries, Cuttings of mistletoe, holly, pine needles, ivy, Feathers, cinnamon sticks and ribbon, a based (bit of card or cake broad) and blue track. Secure your log to the based with blue tack so it does not roll and place a candle in the centre secure with blue tack glue the rest of the decoration on and you have your own Yule log.

Although the Yule log has it roots in paganism it true origins have been lost and although used in some pagan paths the Yule log is no more than a remnant of a folk tradition that has been adopted by other religions as they needed it.

But no matter its history or uses the Yule log is a symbol of warmth and protection and joy and celebration and any symbol that can be coated in chocolate is fine with me.

The Moon and her guises

moon phases 150x150 The Moon and her guises Lunar deities can be male or female and these deities can also change to become solar deities and vice versa. For me the moon is a visual representation of the female aspect of the Devine and not “The” or “A” goddess but all goddess’s: the total female aspect.
There are physical representations of “woman” in the moon cycle 29.53 days (29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes) very close to a woman menstrual cycle. Also the  [wikipedia]phases of the moon [/wikipedia] resembles the life cycles with in womanhood, aging,  [wikipedia]pregnancy [/wikipedia] and  [wikipedia]menopause [/wikipedia] and all aspects of life.
The Phase of the moon can also be attuned to the seasons and spell casting as well as your own life. It is a good idea to keep a moon diary and make note of your moods, your menstrual cycle or your own internal cycle.

Below is how I see the phases of the moon as a solitary practitioner I have to attune myself to myself for magickal working while groups attune to the group energy each group or person will have their own view of the moon and every single one is a correct view.
The New Moon
For me the new is the beginning and the end it contains all the hidden mysteries of woman and all the worst aspects of woman the side that when evoked is feared.
First Quarter
For me this aspect relates to the maiden aspect of the goddess because of the new possibilities and the sense of growth and understanding and the potential of new energy.
There is always a sense of silliness for me around this time for me, which I enjoy.
For me this phase of the moon relates to spring the hope of new beginnings, growing in strength, becoming fertile and this will reflect on what spell or rituals I plan to perform during the new moon.
In the first quarter I would cast spells for strengthening will power, health or financial situations.
Full Moon
For me the is very much the mother aspect of the goddess, each time I look on the full moon I can feel the smile of a loving mother watching over me. For me the full moon fills me with a sense that I am protected someone is always lighting my way, and my back is always covered.
For me this phase of the moon relates to the summer and transformations, relaxation, friendship, and taking some personal time. Personally I do not cast spells during the full moon unless there is an emergency but I do perform ritual where the focus is to gain understanding and patience and learn to accept the life that I have been given and that changes what will happens when it is right like a mother waiting to give birth it will happen when it meant to not before or after with whatever results are meant to be.
The last quarter.
This phase of the moon always reminds me of my mother in the last few years of her life. She had found her soul mate had a nice home and mellowed so much as a person and she had become friend and confidant but she still had a vicious side.

She was mother, stepmother and grandmother and dying with an understanding the she was passing away a crone.

This phase for me relates to autumn and the slow death of nature the weakening of the sun the whole winding down.

The rituals and spells I would perform in this phase would be spells or rituals to weaken or end things in healing ritual I would work to lessen the illness (NB; always work to weaken illness never symptoms, weaken or reducing symptoms can make the person worse as your spell will mask the illness).

The New Moon

And we are back to the new moon and in this phase I see the in a number of ways first I see the true crone stepping in to death I see the maiden and the mother I see all the contradiction, life and death, I see the eternity of unknown knowledge, the darkness of fear.

This phase to me is winter the thing that becomes hidden a time for withdrawal and darkness.

This would be the time to do protection spells; this would also be the time to perform darker magicks such as spells for personal gain, bindings or insuring that people get what is coming to them. If you do decide to work darker magicks beware the rule of three what you send out comes back threefold.

Honour the Goddess in all things and view the moon as a living photo of the mother gaze on it daily and connect with the moon as a huge power source of cosmic female energy and not as a living deity.

Re-Thinking The Watchtowers

Pentagram of Solomon 150x150 Re Thinking The Watchtowersor 13 Reasons Air Should Be In The North
by Mike Nichols
fondly dedicated to Kathy Whitworth

INTRODUCTION

It all started 20 years ago. I was 16 years old then, and a recent initiate to the religion of Wicca. Like most neophytes, I was eager to begin work on my Book of Shadows, the traditional manuscript liturgical book kept by most practicing Witches. I copied down rituals, spells, recipes, poems, and tables of correspondences from every source I could lay hands on. Those generally fell into two broad categories: published works, such as the many books available on Witchcraft and magic; and unpublished works, mainly other Witches’ Books of Shadows.

Twenty years ago, most of us were ‘traditional’ enough to copy everything by hand. (Today, photocopying and even computer modem transfers are becoming de rigueur.) Always, we were admonished to copy ‘every dot and comma’, making an exact transcription of the original, since any variation in the ceremony might cause major problems for the magician. Seldom, if ever, did anyone pause to consider where these rituals came from in the first place, or who composed them. Most of us, alas, did not know and did not care. It was enough just to follow the rubrics and do the rituals as prescribed.

But something brought me to an abrupt halt in my copying frenzy. I had dutifully copied rituals from different sources, and suddenly realized they contained conflicting elements. I found myself comparing the two versions, wondering which one was ‘right’, ‘correct’, ‘authentic’, ‘original’, ‘older’, etc. This gave rise to the more general questions about where a ritual came from in the first place. Who created it? Was it created by one person or many? Was it ever altered in transmission? If so, was it by accident or intent? Do we know? Is there ever any way to find out? How did a particular ritual get into a Coven’s Book of Shadows? From another, older, Book of Shadows? Or from a published source? If so, where did the author of the published work get it?

I had barely scratched the surface, and yet I could already see that the questions being raised were very complex. (Now, all these years later, I am more convinced than ever of the daunting complexity of Neo-Pagan liturgical history. And I am equally convinced of the great importance of this topic for a thorough understanding of modern Witchcraft. It may well be a mare’s nest, but imagine the value it will have to future Craft historians. And you are unconditionally guaranteed to see me fly into a passionate tirade whenever I’m confronted with such banal over-simplifications as ‘Crowley is the REAL author of the Third Degree initiation,’ or ‘Everyone KNOWS Gardner INVENTED modern Witchcraft.’)

CONFLICTING TRADITIONS

The first time I noticed conflicting ritual elements was when I was invited as a guest to attend another Coven’s esbat celebration. When the time came to ‘invoke the Watchtowers’ (a ritual salutation to the four directions), I was amazed to learn that this group associated the element of Earth with the North. My own Coven equated North with Air. How odd, I thought. Where’d they get that? The High Priestess told me it had been copied out of a number of published sources. Further, she said she had never seen it listed any other way. I raced home and began tearing books from my own library shelves. And sure enough! Practically every book I consulted gave the following associations as standard: North = Earth, East = Air, South = Fire, West = Water.

Then where the heck did I get the idea that Air belonged in the North? After much thought, I remembered having copied my own elemental/directional associations from another Witch’s Book of Shadows, her Book representing (so she claimed) an old Welsh tradition. Perhaps I’d copied it down wrong? A quick long-distance phone call put my mind at ease on that score. (When I asked her where she’d gotten it, she said she THOUGHT it was from an even older Book of Shadows, but she wasn’t certain.)

By now, I felt miffed that my own tradition seemed to be at variance with most published sources. Still, my own rituals didn’t seem to be adversely affected. Nor were those of my fellow Coven members, all of whom put Air in the North. Further, over the years I had amassed lots of associations and correspondences that seemed to REQUIRE Air to be in the North. The very thought of Air in the East offended both my sense of reason and my gut-level mythic sensibilities. There are good REASONS to place Air in the North. And the whole mythological superstructure would collapse if Air were in the East, instead. If this is so, then why do most published sources place Earth in the North and Air in the East?

RITUAL TAMPERING

Suddenly, I felt sure I knew the reason! Somewhere along the line, someone had deliberately tampered with the information! Such tampering is a long and venerable practice within certain branches of magic. In Western culture, it is most typically seen among Hermetic, Cabalistic and ‘ceremonial’ magic lodges. It is common among such groups that, when publishing their rituals for public consumption, they will publish versions that are INCOMPLETE and/or deliberately ALTERED in some way from the authentic practice. This prevents someone who is NOT a member of the group from simply buying a book, and performing the rituals, without benefit of formal training. It is only when you are initiated into the lodge that you will be given the COMPLETE and/or CORRECTED versions of their rituals. This is how such groups guard their secrets. (And it is a telling postscript that many scholars now believe modern Witchcraft to have ‘borrowed’ its directional/elemental correspondences from ceremonial magic sources! What a laugh if this was Crowley’s last best joke on his friend Gerald Gardner!)

I remember the first time I became aware of such deliberate ritual tampering. A friend of mine had been making a study of the so-called ‘planetary squares’, talismans that look like magic squares consisting of a grid of numbers in some cryptic order. There are seven such squares — one for each of the ‘old’ planets. While making this study, he began colouring the grids (more for his own pleasure than anything else), making colourful mini-mosaics, using first two colours, then three, then four, and on up to the total number of squares in the grid. Six of the planetary squares yielded pleasing patterns of colour. Then there was the Sun Square! Against all expectation, the colours were a random jumble, with no patterns emerging. Thus, he began his quest for the CORRECTED Sun square. And I became convinced of the reality of ritual tampering.

THE WATCHTOWERS

All that remains, then, is for me to assemble all the arguments in favour of the Air-in-the-North model, which I have now come to believe is the CORRECTED system of correspondences. The remainder of this article will be devoted to those arguments, each with its own name and number:

1. AIRTS: This is perhaps the strongest argument. In Celtic countries, the four elemental/directional associations are referred to as the ‘four airts’. And it is a known fact that this tradition associates Air with North. While it is true that some writers, familiar with ceremonial magic (like William Sharp and Doreen Valiente), have given ‘tampered’ versions of the airts, it is a telling point that folklorists working directly with native oral traditions (like Alexander Carmichael and F. Marion McNeil) invariably report the Air/North connection.

2. PARALLEL CULTURES: Although arguing from parallel cultures may not be as convincing, it is still instructive to examine other magical aboriginal cultures in the Western hemisphere. For example, the vast majority of Native American tribes (themselves no slouches in the area of magic!) place Air in the North, which they symbolize by the Eagle. (Aboriginal cultures lying south of the equator typically have different associations, for reasons I will discuss next.)

3. GEOPHYSICAL: If one accepts the insular British origins of elemental directions, then one must imagine living in the British Isles. To the West is the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean (i.e. water). To the East, the bulk of the European land mass (earth). South has always been the direction of fire because, as one travels south (toward the equator), it gets warmer. Which leaves North as the region of air, home of the icy winds of winter. (These last two associations would be reversed for cultures in the southern hemisphere, for whom north is the direction of the warm equatorial region, and south is the land of ice.)

4. HYPERBORIAN: In fact, an ancient name for the British Isles was ‘Hyperboria’, which literally means ‘behind the north wind’, thus associating north and wind (air) once more. The inhabitants were themselves called ‘Hyperborians’, and the phrase ‘at the back of the north wind’ (the title of one of George MacDonald’s faery romances) is still current. Of all the winds of the compass, it is unquestionably the north wind (Boreas), bringer of winter, which is perceived as the strongest and most influential (cf. Robert Grave’s goddess fantasy ‘Watch the North Wind Rise’). You don’t hear too much about the other three cardinal winds.

5. SEASONAL: Many occultists associate the four seasons with the four cardinal points, as well. Hence, winter = north, spring = east, summer = south, and autumn = west. (To be precise, it is the solstice and equinox points which align with the cardinal points.) Again, in most folklore, winter is associated with air and wind, as the icy blasts that usher in the season. In spring, it is the earth which arrests our attention, with its sudden riot of blooms and greenery. Again, south relates to summer, the hottest season (fire), and west relates to autumn.

6. DIURNAL: Occultists also often associate the cardinal points of a single day to the four compass points. Thus, midnight = north, sunrise = east, noon = south, and sunset = west. (Please note that we are talking about TRUE midnight and TRUE noon here, the points halfway between sunset and sunrise, and between sunrise and sunset, respectively.) These associate nicely with the seasonal attributes just discussed. It is easy to see why sunrise should equate to east, and sunset to west. And, once again, from the prespective of the British Isles, the sun rises over land (earth) and sets over the ocean (water). South is related to noon because it is the moment of greatest heat (fire). Leaving the ‘invisible’ element of air to be associated with the sun’s invisibility, at midnight.

7. MYTHOLOGICAL: In Celtic mythology, north is invariably associated with air. The pre-Christian Irish gods and goddesses, the Tuatha De Danann, were ‘airy’ faeries (later versions came equiped with wings, relating them to sylphs). The Book of Conquests states their original home was in the north, ‘at the back of the north wind’. And when they came to Ireland, they came in ships, THROUGH THE UPPER AIR (!), settling on the mountain tops. (It has always struck me as odd that some modern writers see mountains as a symbol of earth. The crucial symbolism of the mountain is its height, rising into the air, touching the sky. Virtually all Eastern traditions associate mountains, favorite abodes of gurus, with air. A CAVE would be a better symbol of earth than a mountain.) In Welsh mythology, too, Math the Ancient, chief god of Gwynedd (or NORTH Wales), is specifically associated with wind, which can carry people’s thoughts to him.

8. YIN/YANG: Many occultists believe that the four elements have yin/yang connections. Both air and fire are seen as masculine, while earth and water are seen as feminine. If air is associated with the north point of the magic circle, and earth is east, then one achieves a yin/yang alternation as one circumnambulates the circle. As one passes the cardinal points of east, south, west, and north, one passes feminine, masculine, feminine, masculine energies. This alternating flux of plus/minus, push/pull, masculine/feminine, is the very pulse of the universe, considered of great importance by most occultists. That it was equally important to our ancestors is evidenced by standing stones in the British Isles. At sites like the Kennet Avenue of Braga, the tall, slender, masculine, phallic stones alternate precisely with the shorter, diamond-shaped yoni stones.

9. GENERATOR: This argument flows out of the previous one. Practicing magicians often think of the magic circle as a kind of psychic generator. Witches in particular like to perform circle dances to ‘raise the cone of power’. Hand in hand, and alternating man and woman, they dance clockwise (deosil) around the circle, moving faster and faster until the power is released. This model has an uncanny resemblance to an electrical generator, as man and woman alternately pass each of the four ‘poles’ of the magic circle. These poles themselves MUST alternate between plus and minus if power is to be raised. This means that if the masculine fire is in the south, then the masculine air MUST be in the north. If the feminine water is in the west, then the feminine earth MUST be in the east. If any adjacent pair were switched, the generator would stop dead.

10. MASCULINE/FEMININE AXIS: When you look at a typical map, north (the cardinal direction) is at the top. Any north-south road is a vertical line, and any east-west road is a horizonatal line. Likewise, a ‘map’ of a magic circle makes the vertical north-south axis masculine (with air and fire), while the horizontal east-west axis is feminine (earth and water). This makes logical sense. When we look at the horizon of the earth, we see a horizontal line. Water also seeks a horizontal plane. Feminine elements, considered ‘passive’, have a natural tendency to ‘lay down’. Fire, on the other hand, alway assumes an erect or vertical position. Air, too, can rise upward, as earth and water cannot. Masculine elements, being ‘active’, have a natural tendency to ‘stand up’.

11. ALTAR TOOLS: In modern Witchcraft, there are four principal altar tools, the same four tools shown on the Tarot card, the Magician. They also correspond to the four Tarot suits, the four ancient treasures of Ireland, and the four ‘hallows’ of Arthurian legend. And, like the four elements, two of them are feminine and two of them are masculine. The pentacle is a shallow dish inscribed with a pentagram, representing earth, and is here placed in the east. The womb-shaped chalice, symbolizing water, is placed in the west. They form the horizontal feminine axis. The phallic-shaped wand, representing fire, is placed in the south. And the equally drugs online without prescription phallic-shaped athame is placed in the north. They form the vertical masculine axis. (The gender associations of cup and blade are especially emphasized in the ritual blessing of wine.)

12. AXIS SYMBOLISM: In nearly every culture, the vertical line is a symbol of yang, or masculine energy. The horizontal line is yin, feminine energy. When the vertical masculine line penetrates the horizontal feminine line, forming the ancient Pagan symbol of the equal-armed cross, it becomes a symbol of life, and life-force. Place a circle around it or on it, and you have a circle-cross or ‘Celtic’ cross, symbol of everlasting life. (Please note the importance of the EQUAL-armed cross. If one arm is longer or shorter, then the four elements are out of balance. The Christian or ‘Roman’ cross, for example, has an extended southern arm. And many historians have commented on Christianity’s excess of ‘fire’ or zeal. Some versions actually show a shortened northern arm, indicating a dearth of ‘air’ or intellectual qualities.)

13. ASTROLOGICAL: The astrological year is divided into four equal quadrants, each beginning at a solstice or equinox. And each quandrant is governed by one of the four elements. Which element can be discovered by examining the exact MID-POINT of the quadrant. For example, the first quadrant, beginning at the winter solstice (north) is governed by air, which rules 15 degrees Aquarius, sybolized by the Man or Spirit. The second quadrant, beginning at the spring equinox (east) is governed by earth, which rules 15 degrees Taurus, the Bull. The third quadrant, beginning at the summer solstice (south) is governed by fire, which rules 15 degrees Leo, the Lion. And the fourth quadrant, beginning at the fall equinox (west) is governed by water, which rules 15 degrees Scorpio, here symbolized by the Eagle. Thus, north, east, south and west correspond to air, earth, fire, and water, and to man, bull, lion, and eagle, respectively. If the last four symbols seem familiar, it is because they represent the four elemental power points of the astrological year, and their symbols appear in the four corners of the Tarot cards, the World and the Wheel of Fortune. (The same figures were later adopted by Christians as symbols of the four gospel writers, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.)

If those are the arguments in favour of Air-in-the-North, where are the counter-arguments in favour of Earth-in-the-North? Surprisingly, I’ve heard very few. The most common by far is ‘But we’ve always done it this way.’ Not too convincing. However, no matter HOW persuasive my arguments may be, many have countered that magic doesn’t lend itself to rational arguments. It’s what FEELS right that counts. True. And there’s no denying that many practitioners do just fine with earth in the north. Granted. Still, if they’ve never tried it the other way, how would they really know?

My challenge to my fellow practitioners then is this: give Air-in-the-North a shot. Just try it on for size. See what it feels like. And not for just a single ritual. It’ll take several tries just to overcome your habitual ritual mindset. And nothing is as habitual as ritual! So in order to give this a fair shake, you’ll have to do a whole series of rituals with air in the north. And go into it with an open mind. Like all magic, if you decide ahead of time it won’t work, it won’t. Then, once you’ve tried it, compare it to your old method. Ask yourself what’s different, if it worked any better, and why or why not. And let me know. I’d enjoy hearing about your experiences.

The Biscuit Ritual

14112010555 150x150 The Biscuit RitualNow running a coven or being solitary there is some point in any ritual the eating of food takes place, for Wiccan’s it cake and Ale / wine for others it may be meat and mead.

No matter what the path, biscuits always work, now most of us live very busy lives and sometimes we do not have the time to bake so store bought biscuits or a packet mix will do.

But if you add a little ritual to things you can make things fun. Now living a pagan life no matter the path is about the divine and your connection to it, some role we assign to gods and some to goddess. And although men have great skill prescription drugs in the kitchen the kitchen is assigned to the woman and in turn the goddess and creativity.

The kitchen in my house is the heart of creativity and I love to cook. But the other night I got bored so looked in the cupboard to see what was their to be honest not much end of month syndrome so with basic ingredince so decided to make some cookies I had to make some adaptation to my basic biscuit receipt I created a big batch of cookie dough and split the mix and added drinking choc to one half. I made a batch of white cookies, choc biscuits and a version of black and white cookies.

I created a huge batch of cookie playing with what was in cupboard to some I added jam; some sprinkles and others sugar ground in pestle and mortar and drip one side of cookie in egg white then ground sugar.

There were so many biscuits I gave some to my best mate and her children who raved about them so I promised to make a batch, which they could freeze so yesterday pop off to supermarket and got the bits to make a batch and some other shopping and grabbed some drink and came home unpacked and cleared a space for Ingredients. What started out as a cookie making session started to become ritualised that state that when you doing something very normal starts to have other meanings and a ritual starts to form.

It becomes an important issue and you start taking notes. The moment I started to feel my action where becoming ritualised I ran back and forth to pc jotting notes which is now forming this article.

Now this is a very informal ritual and take about an hour and music is option, as I said these cookies could be frozen so you can use when you need

So here is the ritual of the cookie. This is a fun ritual and designed to bring into understanding nothing has to be hard to do and should not difficult to perform and above all be fun. And as reminder to all the goddess should never be confined to the kitchen she has other need too.

Tools
1 large mixing bowl (white and ceramic if poss.)
Bottle of favourite drink.
Plastic knife or spatula
Cling film

Ingredients
250g butter, softened
140g sugar
1 egg yolk
2 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
250g plain flour
100g ground almonds

Optional
Extract / flavour to suit ritual or path
Coco powder
Chocolate
Toppings (up to you)

NB if you double the ingredients the only thing you will need to measure is sugar

Ritual

Look around the kitchen and gather ingredients invite the goddess to join you.(create your sacred space)

Pour yourself a drink and raise a glass goddess and say,

“a task that will end in fun will be created with joy and freedom”

Pour all ingredients in to bowl leaving out egg and extract.

Using you dominant hand mix ingredince as you sip your drink. You could meditate on the goddess as you pour energy in to the bowl.

Once all the ingredients have come together take the egg and think of it symbolisation and crack the egg into the bowl (and extract if using).

Again using you dominant hand, mix the egg (and extract if using) until it completely incorporated you can focus on joy and happiness pouring it into the mix.

Scrape excess mix off hand and leave to stand for about half hour. Pour your self another drink and go watch some TV or listen to music.

After about half hour return to bowl using the plastic knife cut sigils of peace and harmony into the mix. One you have carved your sigils and have obliterated them.

Take your cling film a lay a length on a flat surface (1 cm per cookie plus 4 inch each end).

Spoon out cookie dough to required length and size (diameter of raw cookie dough will double when cooked).

Wrap cling film to produce sausage shape once wrapped and desired width is reached twist excess cling film and tie to a knot do this both ends so the cookie dough is in a tight sausage shape.

Depending on size of mix and cookie size will relate to number of sausages you get.

Once bowl is empty end the ritual by saying.

“Now the mix is made the duty of the goddess is paid” smile and raise your glass what remains is a gift to the goddess and should be poured on the ground (outside).

The grounding for this ritual is the cleaning up.

Adaptations.

For black and white cookies.

Divide the mix in two to one half add coco powder choc chips and meditate on the balance (your own personal symbolisation can be used for this.) make a sausage of white mix and make a sausage of dark mix and place next to each other on cling film and wrap the same way to produce sausage..

Flavouring

For some rituals using appropriate flavours is appropriate just add extra flavours in the form of extract or topping.

Using cookies mix

If using fresh let chill for an hour. From frozen defrost completely and slice into 1cm discs remove cling film place in oven at 200 degrees for 15 mins give or take depending on size
