Origins of the Runes

row600 Origins of the Runes

No-one knows exactly how old the runes are. Rune-like symbols appear as cave markings as early as the late Bronze Age (circa 1300 BC), and they are mentioned in the Bible, but their use in ritual and as an oracle for consultation must certainly pre-date their use as a written language.

0302 Origins of the RunesEminent scientific runologist Dr R. I. Page of Cambridge University (Reading the Past – runes 1987) notes 0301 Origins of the Runesthat the runic forms were well established and gave the appearance of having been in use for some centuries before the time of the earliest written language inscriptions.

The fact that the runes were each given meaningful names confirms that they had some magical or religious significance to their users long before they emerged as an alphabet for records and messages. The word Rune itself comes from the old Norse Runa meaning a secret or mystery, and it seems likely that the early Runemasters and Runemistresses were considered to have some magic or mystic power in their understanding of the runes.

The runes represent objects, gods, people, animals, concepts and occurrences. They were known by names from which their alphabetic values were taken, but it must be remembered that the early Germanic and Norse tribes who developed them did so long before they had any need for written language.

It was not until about AD200, when the Runemal (i.e. the art of runic interpretation) was wide-spread in Northern Europe that the runic alphabet emerged. This alphabet became known as the Futhark or Futhork, after the names of the first 6 Runes (Fehu, Uruz, Thurisaz, Ansuz, Raido, Kauno) and it is these 24 symbols that now comprise the Rune set. The “blank rune” that you might see included in some rune sets to represent Odin, Fate or Destiny is a fairly modern idea not adopted by serious rune users.

There are very few surviving runic inscriptions and most of them are on stone or metal – the most durable of materials. Only a handful of inscriptions carved on wood have been found, and none of these is from Britain.

There is sufficient evidence to show that the Ancient Pagan or Anglo-Saxon Runes (known to runologists as the Anglo-Friesian runes from their geographical occurrence) are the same 24 basic runes with variations in their form due to usage over the centuries.

For example, the Hagalaz of the Norse resembled an angled H but the Anglo-Saxons added a second cross-bar.

0303 Origins of the Runes0304 Origins of the RunesVariations in pronunciation also occur. For instance, the Norsemen pronounced W as a V, but Anglo-Saxons had adapted this to the modern W sound by 600AD. A guide to the probable Anglo-Saxon pronunciations can be found in my book “Discovering Runes” and also on my website at http://www.runemaker.com. You can even download a sound version of the Futhark spoken in Old English by clicking here.

There are those who suggest that many of the rune forms are copied from Roman script – the system of letters on which modern Western writing is based. Such examples as Mannaz (M), Fehu (F), Berkanan (B), Raido (R) are obviously very similar, but it is also possible that the rune symbols (although not then used as letters) are earlier in development.

Consider the technology and equipment that was necessary to undertake Roman writing. Parchment or paper with all the processing that requires – such as blanching chemicals and drying processes; the formulation of durable ink and its mass production; and not forgetting the development of a complex writing implement such as the quill pen.

A civilisation is hardly likely to undertake all these developments unless a suitable written language were in existence. Look now at the needs of the Runemaster or Runemistress, what did they require? Nothing more than a stick of wood and a sharp knife to incise the runes.

Both of these requisites have been available to Man from the very earliest times. That runes were initially cut in wood there is no doubt. The very shape of the runes confirm this by the avoidance of the horizontal or curved line.

If you experiment with a flat wood surface you will find that it is very easy to cut straight lines across the grain. It is much more difficult to cut a curve with a straight knife blade. And it is almost impossible to cut a line horizontally along the grain – the cut closes up as the wood dries, and the line thus disappears.

The early Runemasters and Runemistresses therefore developed a system of writing from their existing fund of mystic or religious symbols which would endure on wood. The symbols were composed of vertical and angled straight lines that could easily be cut or burned in wood.

Recorded history abounds with examples of the runes endowed with secret or mystical power. The Greek historian Herodotus (484-424BC) records a form of Runecasting with sticks by Scythian tribesmen (a nomadic people of upper Asian origin who settled around the Black Sea about 700 BC) in the Caucasus region about 470BC. The ceremony was accompanied by much ritual and the use of soporific smoke.

The Roman historian Cornelius Tacitus (58-120AD) records a Germanic tribal Runemal in some detail in Chapter 10 of his ethnographical work Germania from about 97AD when he was Consul to the region:

To divination they pay much attention. Their method is a simple one: they cut a branch from a fruit-bearing tree and divide it into small pieces which they mark with certain distinctive signs and scatter at random onto a white cloth. Then the priest of the community (if it is done publicly) or the father of the family (if it is done privately) after invoking the gods and with eyes raised to heaven, picks up three pieces one at a time and interprets them in accordance with the signs previously marked on them.

When the high chieftains and lawgivers of Anglo-Saxon England met in secret, their assemblies were known as The Runes: and a 4th Century translation of the Bible uses the word Runa for “mystery” or “secret proceedings”.

The ancient Norse prose tales of the Edda have Odin hung on the World Tree when he spies the runes and seizes them up to gain wisdom and well-being. The Edda also mentions Bragi, master of the skalds (minstrels) and a great storyteller who reputedly had runes tattooed on his tongue – a reference to his magical gift as a raconteur.

The slightly later poem Erik the Red describes a Runemistress in full regalia. The traditional lore 0305 Origins of the Runesof Finland, as recorded in the Kalevala by Lönnrot in 1835, describes a confrontation of wizards where runic songs were used to cause fire and devastation.

Some modern experts allege that stones were commonly used for the Runemal, but I have found no evidence of this despite extensive research. The indications, whether from runology, known Pagan religious beliefs, or Saxon witchcraft ritual, all point to the use of wood, particularly from fruit-bearing trees.

I am no longer making rune sets these days, my fingers don’t work as well as they used to, but in my efforts to accurately recreate the Ancient Runemal, they were made from Ash, Beech, Birch, Blackthorn, Cherry, Chestnut, Elder, Hawthorn, Hazel, Rowan, Sycamore, Willow and a few other wild woods. In keeping with the Pagan respect for living things, I never would cut from living trees, but used windfall or forested branches.

Each rune set was individually dated, serial numbered and identified as to the wood and its origin. You can find details of my book Discovering Runes and some retrospective articles about the rune sets and other handcrafted runewares that I used to make on my website at: http://www.runemaker.com.

Tools of the craft

Pagan 150x150 Tools of the craftMany neo pagan paths will use tools as part of their ritual work. Pagan ritual tools can be bought or made, although the majority of pagan tools will require a high degree of skill to construct.

Although no witch or pagan needs tools to perform magicks, cast spells or for ritual work it is nice to have them. But what should you buy and for what reason, below is a list of pagan and craft tools, I have separated the tools in to primary, secondary and tertiary craft tools

Primary tools of the craft

These tools are use in a majority of neo pagan paths and are common tools of the craft.

The Athame

The Athame (pronounced ah-thah-may) is a double-sided dagger with either a straight or flame shaped blade with a black handle. The blade is blunt so it does not accidentally cut someone, if Athame blade comes in contact with blood would render it useless and polluted. The Athame is never used to cut only to direct energy and is used in casting a circle.

The Athame is associated with the East and Air or South and Fire depending on which pagan path you follow. The Athame is also associated with the Male deity due to it phallic shape and is often used in conjunction with the Chalice and cauldron to symbolise the union of the god and goddess.

Besom Or Bossume

The traditional witches broom use to sweep away negativity and is used in Handfasting ceremonies witches are often depicted flying on a besom, The Besom is constructed from bundle of birch twigs, a staff of ash or oak, and a binding made from willow wands and is associated with the west and water.

Book of shadows

This is a book were possible leather bound and hand made but normally a large book containing rituals, spells, recipes, tables of correspondences and notes it possible to find that the contents may have been written in a magickal language such as runes or Theban. Their are coven Books of shadows and indervidual books of shadows

The Cauldron.

The cauldron has many uses within neo pagan paths and witchcraft; it is used for cooking, potions and food, scying, spell work. The cauldron is a three-footed pot with lid that comes in a range of sizes from tiny to mammoth size.

The cauldron is associated to the goddess and is seen a womb and a grave and places of hidden mysteries. The cauldron is associated with the west and water but can be used with any element with out conflict as the cauldron can be placed on earth or in fire filled with water when heat creates steam (air).

The censer

The censer is used to burn the incense that is often offered to the Deities, as well as being used to invoke the spirits of the Air, the Sylphs and Faery. The censer can be swinging brass burner or a few incense sticks held together and by wafting will become a censer.

The censer is a tool of the element Air.

Cup or Chalice

The Cup or Chalice is closely associated with the cauldron and is often called a bowl and is used to contain salt water, or wine for libation. The cup, chalice or bowl is normally made from brass, animal horn, crystal, glass or ceramic; some paths may have one Chalice for libation and other Cups (bowls) on an altar.

The Chalice represents the goddess and the west and water and is often used in conjunction with the Athame to symbolise the union of the goddess and goddess.

Cord Or Cingulum

The cord is used in some initiation rituals to bind the applicant; the cord is also used to mark out the circumference of a circle.

The Pentagram

The symbol of the pentagram is often worn a jewellery, engrave and printed on fabrics or ornaments and tools of the craft. The pentagram is also used as an altar plate where spells are constructed or offerings are places. The pentagram is associated with the goddess and the direction north and earth but can be associated with any element depending on the way it has be cast.

Wand

Often used as a replacement or alternative to the Athame wands can be made from wood or metal and it is possible to have more than one wand as wand can be created for specific purposes.

The wand is associated with the god and depending on tradition is either associated with the south and fire or east and air.

Secondary tools of the craft

The secondary tools are important but are not used in all pagan paths they are often associated or akin to primary tools.

Bells

The bell is often use to symbolise a beginning or completion or used as a source of vibration to help add energy to your working associated with east and air.

Candles

Although no ritual seems to be complete with out candle light candles are used in ritual as symbols or representations of the elements, the deities a person or for spell work. Candles are associated with the south and fire but the corresponding colours can be used to invoke other associations.

The Staff

Basically a staff, is a big wand and has the same associations and uses but it can also be used as a symbol of leadership.

The Sword

The Sword is a big Athame with the same association and is used in the same way and can be used as a symbol of leader ship.

Tertiary tools of the craft

The tools of the craft are not required for every ritual but no doubt every pagan and witch will have most if not all of these items.

Burin Or Bolline

A minor tool, a white hilted knife, is used for cutting herbs and any other use save magickal ritual in which the Athame is implemented. Many paths differ on the need for the Burin. Gardnerian Wicca absolutely forbids the use of the Athame for any purpose other than rituals. Seax-Wica on the other hand finds no need for it. It is a tool either abandoned or accepted by the various paths.

Crystals

Crystals use as altar decorations offerings used in spell work and healings.

Divination tools

Divination tools, such as runes, tarot cards, crystal balls used in spell work and affirmation

Herbs

Herbs used in incense as offerings in spell working and healing.

Poppets

Poppets or effigies these are either cloth or made from wax and are used in healing and spell work.

Sigils of the craft

symbols and charms and talismans used in jewellery, spell work healing and ritual works the most common Sigel is the pentagram.

Ways of connecting with the Tarot

deck of tarot cards 150x150 Ways of connecting with the TarotAs you learn tarot by whatever means book, from a teacher or off the Internet you will find that you can either work with Tarot or not if you can then stop find another tool for divination that you are better suited to such as runes or crystal balls never force it. If you can work with tarot you are going to want to connect with them one a spiritual as well as personal level. Never read for yourself you will only ever see what you want to see and never use them as a magic eight ball to help you decide what to do. But do use them to help you become a better person and connect fully with the cards there are some excellent techniques to this in the Hallow quest the book that goes with Arthurian Tarot

It is important when connecting with tarot that you show respect and treat your cards well, Insure that when you pick your tarot pack that you choose a pack with imagery and symbology that you can connect to personally. If you’re a bit of a traditionalist then the Waite-Smith or Rider Waite Tarot, If you enjoy and have a big interest in the Arthurian legends then Arthurian Tarot By John & Caitlin Matthews or if you’re a gay man then the Gay Tarot, it does not matter what pack and there are hundreds to choose from just as long as it feels right to you.

Always keep your cards safe and protected, show them respect keep them in a tarot bag or tarot box or both. Keep them away from things that can charge them or drain them of their energy.

One of the easiest times to connect with tarot cards is when you first get a pack this first technique is used on a new tarot deck but can be also used to re energise a tarot deck.

When you first open the pack don’t shuffle or look at the cards place your dominant hand below the cards (normally your right hand) and your passive hand on top of the pack find your own internal energy (see playing with understanding and playing with energies) and place it in the centre of your chest around the position of you heart chakra. Allow it to grow and move down your right arm and push it through the cards and back up your left arm until it completes a circle of energy. Keep the energy moving in circular motion seeing your own energies clearing the cards of all negativities and filling the cards with your own energy.

As the cards become infused with your energy your own energy will be able to pass through the tarot deck with much more ease. You will know when the cards are completely clean of all negatives and are attuned to yourself, as the energy flowing through your arms and chest will stabilise into a continuous loop that has a steady pulse. Once you’re at this stage say an incantation or state that you want the cards to guide and show you all you need to know.

Then put the cards to one side and wash hand under running cold water to wash way any remaining negativity the follow instructs on pack or from book.

This next technique for connecting with the cards is an adaptation from the Hallow quest. Centre yourself then pick a tarot card from the tarot deck spend sometime looking at the design of the card the details do this until you can close your eyes and visualise the card as a real place with real people and real animal visualise your self walking around inside the cards talk to the people in the card find out what they are doing their, look behind trees and building look pass the image of the card find out what lie beyond or what is hidden when your ready to leave see the visualisation returning to a flat image then open your eyes and write you feelings and any information you gained. You will need to be very creative with this visualisation and allow yourself to just imagine.

The third way to connect with the tarot cards is a fun way by using the cards to tell a story and is not a new technique pick some cards at random from the pack I would say no more than 10 place the tarot cards in a pile next to you and start to write a story start with a lead person a knight a princess etc and turn a card over and incorporate that card into the story here is an example “Rodger the knight was walking when (turn card = the Hermit) he met a hermit that lived in the woods…” Just fill the stories with as much detail and feeling as you can imagine, and let yourself be inspired by the cards. Although many of your stories will not make it to the best seller list you should when you read them back you should be able to see a relation with your own life giving an insight to yourself.

Way to insure your cards remain connected do’s and don’ts

Do’s

  • Keep you cards in a safe place
  • Use a Tarot Box or Bag
  • Respect them as a tool of your work
  • Find a pack that suits you

Don’ts

  • Let anyone else use your cards
  • Use them as game cards
  • Don’t leave them lying around
  • Read for yourself.
  • Don’t let the cards make your choices for you.
  • Don’t read for anyone under influence of drink or drugs

Rune Stancing In Healing

runes 150x150 Rune Stancing In HealingRune stance work has a positive effect on health, especially where the problem is a biopathy i.e. a ‘disease’ of the autonomous life system. Biopathies are afflictions rooted in a lack of vitality. Rune and Galdar – Stancing can ease that, (as can any activity that promotes deep, systematic breathing good posture and improved Feorh flow. By stabilizing the bio –energy (Feorh) you give the body a better chance of healing, and defending against future ills.

Most Biopathies are related to character armour, i.e. vitality cease to flow freely when aspects of self are repressed and so ‘stored’ in muscular tension this same lack of energy can occur if we e.g. work or sit in a cramped posture. Stancing can help to gradually dissolve that tension – but cannot solve the cause of it. Often a symptom reflects a deep-rooted need. Listen to you body and learn!

Galdor Stancing

runes 150x150 Galdor StancingGaldor is an Old English word meaning to ‘enchant with voice / song’ (Galdorcræft Is the art of doing so)

Galdor can also be used in a variety of other ways, in meditation, pathworking, the naming of objects etc, and in stance work. Most pagan paths use sound in rituals and workings, in the Enochian tradition they use a system called Vowel song a system found across the world from the Middle East to Scandinavia – albeit under different names. Here is a basic form:

I : the head SPIRIT. High pitch sound, which varies based on the indervidual.

E ; Neck and throat. AIR phonetically sounds like the e in very or head

A ; Solar Plexus, the bodies central warming, heart, liver and spleen. FIRE phonetically sounds like the a in half or far.

O ; Lower abdomen, intestines, kidneys, bladder. WATER phonetically sounds like the o in not.

U ; base of the spine, genitals, perineum, anus ,legs EARTH sounds like hoow or do

Each vowel is sung or chanted in order although they can be sung as one single linked vowel “iiieeeaaaooouuu” to draw energy down from the sky or as “uuuoooaaaeeeiii” to draw energy from the earth.

Galdor Stancing incorporates vibration / sound with physical stances. A beginner will start with the following system.

Stand quietly facing north, breath deeply and focus.

An invocation is then made to Wodin or the Norns.

Runes used are Is, Ur, Eohl, Tiw,, Lagu, and Ger

Is –

runes r31 c2 Galdor StancingFeet together, centered in yourself and to the ground, Extend arms straight up with palms facing take a full deep breath and sign out the name of the rune Is the ‘I’ is high pitched and the ‘s’ is a hiss fading to silence. Relax don’t force it repeat 3 times.

Ur –

runes r10 c12 Galdor StancingLower arms and bend at waist don’t stretch just relax visualize reaching gently down in to the depths. The U is deep and sonorous while the R is rolled or guttural repeat 3 times.

Eohl –

runes r21 c12 Galdor StancingStand up lifting arms up and out palms up the ‘e’ and ‘o’ are a described earlier the ‘l’ is rolled and the ‘h’ becomes a breathy exhalation repeat 3 times (this stance connects with Sky / Air energies)

Tiw –

runes r7 c11 Galdor StancingLet the arms fall down, palms down. The ‘t’ is hard and the ‘i’ and ‘w’ are pronounced as ‘ooo’ (Tee-ooo). The sound descends tonally repeat 3 times ( this stance connect with earth energies)

Lagu –

runes r9 c7 Galdor StancingTurn east raise both hands in front of you palms down. The ‘l’ is rolled, the ‘g’ is hard and ‘a’ and ‘e’ as previously described. Repeat 3 times this stance connects with ocean tides, rivers lakes and springs etc)

Ger –

runes r2 c7 Galdor StancingPlace hands on hips, elbows out to sides, the g is soft ‘e’ as described earlier and the r is rolled. Repeat 3 times.

If unsure of your positioning look at the shape of the rune you should look like a human rune symbol.

Once completed stand relax breath slowly and deeply and ground yourself.

It will normally take around 6 month practice with the basic system before going on to try other runes. In that period you should increase you repartitions from 3 to 9 slowly. You should also experiment indoors and out, sing loudly and signing softly or even internalizing the sound creating them in you head.

It will take many years of Galdor work before you can sing all 33 runes. And their are a number of runes that require more than one person to stance.

With runes that require more than one person to complete you will need to do this with another person who knows Galdor Stancing you cant get some just to stand in the position there are no short cuts

And with any practice ground Buy Acomplia Online yourself!!!

The Runic Internal Energy system

yggdrasil 221x300 The Runic Internal Energy systemMuch is written about the Yggdrasil, the world tree that supports the nine worlds on 3 levels of being. The concept of a central pole, pillar, tree that holds the cosmos together, dividing and connecting the heavens and the earth is found all over the world, in many cultures (totem poles, Chinese tree of life, the kabbalah, Yggdrasil, the Saxon Irminsul etc).

All of these can correlate to the human spine( the microcosm of the universes macrocosm).

Starting at the head (where Feorh is generated) and working down the spin to the lumbar area there are 24 vertebrae, equating to the runes Feoh to Doeg. The sacrum is composed of 5 bones fused together equating to the runes Ac to Ear, the coccyx 3 bones equating to the runes Calc to Stan. This gives us 32 runes. As the Sacrum and coccyx are fused together as a single entity they create the final (33rd) rune; Gar. This gives us not 3 aetts but 4, the fourth aetts expanding on the meanings of the others.

By meditation on the rune corresponding to each vertebrate we can engage on internal energy work, moving up or down the spine to explore the runes and the worlds.

Always start at Midgarđ (9th thoracic vertebra) and work up to Asgarđ (the skull) or down to Niflheim (between the 3rd and 4th sacral vertebra. About the level with the pubic bone at the front of the body). ALWAYS leave at Midgarđ too!! Working down the body draws in sky energies whilst working up the body draws in earth energies. Remember balance and harmony! As always ground your self afterward.

Write it secrete

runes 150x150 Write it secrete { W722B946DRV4 }Since keeping a book of shadows has change from being a book of recipes created by families, which contained fokelaw and superstition to at it most extreme version ,  a digital diary containing spells and rituals.

During the Burning Times these books would be used as evidence of witchcraft so other forms of passing information on where developed. Information was passed on via oral stories and rhythms and pictures.

Codes where created to unlock these secrete and sadly many have been lost but that being said it as allowed neo pagan to find and develop new skills and rituals.

As part of the reclaiming of the old tradition some Neo Pagan paths will use a “Magickal Alphabet” these are ancient or made up alphabets which are used to hide information contained with in.

The Most common being Theban or  “the Witches alphabet” was created by Honorius in the 12th century as a way to encode other writing (likely Latin at the time).

The other alphabet that are common are Enochian is also referred to as Angelic Script and is used in ceremonial magick Legend has it that the magicians Edward Kelly and Dr. John Dee were given this language by an angel and Ogham which is an alphabet used by the Druids, and each letter corresponds to a sacred tree. And finally the best known of all ancient alphabets, runes which are also associated with divination. The alphabet is called the Futhark, Runic writings have been found throughout northern Europe and date mostly around the 11th century AD.

If your going to use a magickal alphabet then you need to be able to read and write in that alphabet it will take much practice to be able to form the letters accurately and does take a long time to master for that reason I have provided some free pagan fonts. What I personally do these days is type up my rituals on PC and once it has been spell checked Change the font to lets say Theban print and add to my book of shadows. Since these alphabets are available now at the click of mouse books of shadows can be translated with ease so there is no real good reason to use any alphabet other than the alphabet you us. The only reason to use magickal alphabets is to make your Book of shadows look more magickal, which in it own way is the best reason to use such alphabets if you feel that your book of shadow has magicks then it will have.

There is no reason why you can not create your own magickal alphabet I personally have one that me and my partner share which we use to send personal message to each other when we are apart, these alphabets can be used on the back of post cards so your message is only understood by sender and the intended recipient but also can be used to hide spells for magickal purposed such as talismans and amulets.

Whether you use a magickal alphabet or not it is always a good idea to be familiar with them knowing what they look like is a good idea.

Galdor Taufe

OFFERING 150x150 Galdor TaufeAnother way of using Galdor is Galdor Taufe, the naming of an object (a poppet, amulets etc). The term Galdor Taufe means “To baptise using voice / song”.

The object to be names should first be purified and cleansed in a simple rite of the elements.(this takes the form of whatever the individual feels appropriate).

The object is then wrapped in dark cloth or placed in a pouch. This is then held at your solar plexus and the name is sung 3 times. Then it is held at the forehead and the name is again sung 3 times. It is then place at the genitals and the name is sung for the final 3 times.

You now unwrap or remove from pouch symbolising the birth of the name object. You then hold it to the sky and announce the name to the gods and give a blessing.

Anything empowered this way should be considered a living being – and treated accordingly. Taufe means baptised and, as such, the object is born and named and blessed by your desires, Remain mindful of the energies you have contained.

New Runes are each, individually; named using Galdor Taufe once they are made.

Ritual objects e.g. Chalice / drinking horn, Athame etc are also named in this way.

Some types of amulets / talismans can also be named, when these have served their purpose the MUST be destroyed. To do this you ‘un-name’ the object by un-singing the name (singing it backwards) and performing the naming rite in reverse. This will release the energies you contained, rendering them mere matter, the object is then destroyed.

NEVER destroy a name object unless you have un-named it. To destroy an object without un-naming is a form of murder.

Do Not Abuse What You Are Responsible For!!

Protection of Buildings

home security 150x150 Protection of BuildingsThere are many means of protecting, guarding, or warding a building, below are described a variety.

Animal Skulls

Usually an ox, fox, or dog, ideally in the foundation of a new building. Ox skulls in particular were used, carved in the appropriate runes / sigils relevant to the people.

Horseshoes

Combine the magickal properties of Iron with the crescent shape of the lunar goddess, nailed over, or on, doors – points uppermost (although in certain parts of the country they where put on their sides, to better resemble a crescent moon). Other ways of hanging a horseshoe would be points down so the luck would pour out over the owner of the house, some witches will align the points with north.

Nails

Iron nails hammered into main support beams or post are associated with Thor and bring good luck and protection from lightening, and intrusion.

Runes

A number of runes are suitable for protecting a building, mort importantly, Ing, Daeg, Gyfu, Gar and Ethel.

Carved or painted on the building in appropriate places, and suitably empowered by rite and energy.

The Runes – Ing / Gyfu / Ethel – for walls

The Runes – Daeg / Ethel – for doorframes, windowsills and frames

The Runes – Gar / Ethel / Ing – are often used a lattices in windows.

Plants can also be used to protect buildings

Hawthorn

A hedge of this around your property is not only a good psychic barrier – but also acts like a natural barbed wire too! Branches of Hawthorn over windows and outside doors protect against all negative energies. It is believed to be bad luck to have hawthorn in actually inside the house though.

Oak

Sacred to Thor. Acorn shapes carved from oak are used on cords of pull down blinds, and as traditional finials on banisters, both oak and acorns give protection

Rowen

Also associated with Thor, grown outside the house by the path leading to the front door wards off bad energy!

St John wort

Hung in bunches over doors and a window on summer solstice protect and cleanses the home from harmful forces.

Yarrow

Strewn across doorsteps to prevent negativity entering.

There are of course, a far greater number of ways to protect buildings than mentioned so far here are a few places around a home where you can use protection.

The threshold

A wreath of thorns placed over a door wards off negativity.

A circle chalked on a door bars ghosts from entering

A bag of salt, or bells, hung from doorknobs repels negativity.

To bar the entrance of evil

Place two cross needles under the doormat, paint the door blue (a sacred colour), or hammer 3 iron nails into the outside of the front door (in a triangle)

It is said that placing 5 shiny pennies under the porch brings household money, and food buried there ensures no one in the house ever goes hungry.

At the Hearth

Crossing the poker and tongs in front of the hearth prevents sparks popping on to the floor and cancels any negative energies coming down the chimney.

A horseshoe placed in the ashes guards the hearth.

A jar of salt on the hearth – in times of arguments and stress or danger, throws a pinch of salt into the flames to clean and blesses the home.

Three circles drawn in white chalk on the hearth bans evil from entering.

Oak burned during healing rites draws off the illness and helps prevent anyone getting sick.

Apple wood burned in the home before lovers meet aids the relationship.

You can also burn ash to promote energy, pine to aid wealth and junitper for protection.

Furnishings

Round rugs

For spiritual peace, good for bedrooms, living rooms meditation / temple room.

Square rugs

For the material and intellectual, good for offices libraries

Oval rugs

The comic essence good everywhere.

To clean rugs sprinkle with salt then either vacuum or take out side and beat.

Furniture with rounded edges is best to allow energy to flow, don’t clutter a room with too much furniture or possession.

Bedrooms

The bed ideally, should run parallel with the floorboards to insure that the energy running through the house isn’t obstructed.

Sleeping positions

Head to north

Idea direction, the direction of magickal power, increases stability, calmness and prosperity.

Head to East

Increases intelligence, freedom of mind. In this direction the sun and moon rises, the belief that sleeping east to west follows the natural course.

Head to South

Nothing but tiredness, illness and insomnia

Head to west

Love and spirituality, increases sensitivity of all sorts, promotes psychic abilities and creativity

The Bed

A small mirror on the headboard protects the sleeper so does laying a broom under the bed.

A hag stone tied to bed post or under bed prevent bad dreams.

Description: Tickets
Hedgewitch Fairs is the events side of the Wonky Broomstick shop. We are a locally based Somerset events company specialising in mystic events and psychic workshops. We have run several over the last 2 years and we would like to invite you to join us this May weekend.

We are holding 4 workshops, 2 each day, tickets are limited as our idea is that you can all come and learn, relax, and achieve. We’ve changed the format slightly that each workshop will be longer so that you have chance to participate and get involved.
The workshops are designed that you learn and develop this will help you enhance your gifts, …learn to empower yourself by cosmic ordering, simply by changing how you ask for something.

Jane is wonderful at clutter clearing and calming the mind, she will teach you how to meditate so you can open your mind, calm your thought process so you can develop your skills, something which sounds easy but it takes practice and guidance to do it properly.

Nicola will carry on and help you develop and protect yourself while working, how to get in touch with your guides, and angels, learn to trust your instincts, protection is a big part of this work and it is important to learn it from a master. This workshop will allow you to increase your abilities and hone in your skills, under Nicola’s guidance.

Vassilia is one of the best life coaches we have ever met, her work in changing your outlook has to be seen to be believed, she has the ability to make you feel you can do anything, by the end of her workshop you will feel completely able to achieve your goals, we have been chasing her around the country trying to get her to do a workshop as she is sooooo busy, but at last we’ve got her.

The last workshop is using tools to aid you in your work, i.e Tarot, Runes, astrology we will also cover the Wiccan path including Sabbats and festivals, the wheel of the year.

Our workshops are about spreading the word and teaching, all our healers have lots of knowledge which they are happy to share.
We have held our prices to £80 each for the weekend this includes a good light lunch each day.
We are again holding our workshops at Coronation Hall Burrowbridge as its on the St Michael lay line and its just perfect.
Spaces are limited as we only ever allow the maximum of 30 per weekend as it gives everyone the chance to get involved.
