Seeing the Goddess in the Media Witches

samantha stephens 150x150 Seeing the Goddess in the Media WitchesSo let start this blog off on a good and interesting footing.

Witches have not always received good press and even today the medias portray witches as hags, super powered women or loony old bats dancing naked in the moon. Many [wikipedia]pagans [/wikipedia] get irate when they see these images and see them as a personal attack on themselves and forget to see them as just a bit of entertainment. Not one of the shows / documentaries I have every seen has ever made me feel like what I believe in is wrong in most cases I really enjoy them.

I do have one pet peeve and that is documentaries if I happen to be watching them with non-pagan friends as I feel that I have to apologise and have to explain what the editing has left out.

But things like [wikipedia]Charmed [/wikipedia], [wikipedia] Eastwick [/wikipedia] and the [wikipedia]Wizard of Oz [/wikipedia] etc in fact I often find them sources of inspiration for [wikipedia]spell [/wikipedia] or [wikipedia]ritual. [/wikipedia]

So let look at the media view and how I see it:-

The hag witch like [wikipedia]grotbags [/wikipedia], the [wikipedia]wicked witch of the west [/wikipedia], [wikipedia]witchiepoo [/wikipedia] which when we look truly at the aspect of the goddess as the [wikipedia]crone [/wikipedia] haggard by age out cast wise and cruel very much like the hag witches on TV,

The supper power uber witch like willow, the charmed sisters, [wikipedia]Samantha Stevens [/wikipedia] look closely and you will see the mother aspect in each of the caring, protective, loving and deadly when crossed the [wikipedia]mother goddess [/wikipedia] is a super power the life bringer the protect.

And finally those moon dancing loony ladies yes we all have seen them and cringed often thinking does the fire make my ass look that big, but we fail to see maiden aspect in these loony Luna ladies you see them on those cheap documentaries babbling rubbish getting it all wrong having fun and learning Just like a [wikipedia]maiden goddess [/wikipedia].

I remember that Janet and [wikipedia]Stewart Farrar [/wikipedia] said that the divine form was like a diamond with many faces and if you only ever looked at one part of it you would miss the true beauty of the divine. I have also learned that the goddess and god can be seen in everything.

There buy drugs online are many things in this life that are worth getting upsetting over and with deeper understanding you will find that every action has a purpose, a reason and the correct outcome.

So the next time you see a witch on TV see if you can find the goddess that will inspire a person to seek her out.

Drawing down the sun

big orange sun 4 300x225 Drawing down the sunAn often forgotten ritual but has a great importance in modern witchcraft since much of modern neopagan witchcraft has stemmed from Wicca. Many of the traditions and practices have been adapted to suit the new and emerging paths and although much emphasis still remains with the goddess that God aspect that has emerged much more than a consult.

Although Wicca considers the duality of the divine duty equal power still lies with the high priestess and often overlooked ritual is the drawing down of the sun. This is a ritual, done by the high priest, although I have heard of high priestess is performing the ritual with some fascinating results to say the least.

The drawing down the Sun ritual can be found inside the covers of the witches Bible by Janet and Stewart Farrar below is a selection of text and the ritual from this book.

Since Wicca is a goddess orientated religion, laying particular stress on the gift of the goddess (intuitive and psychic facilities) because of the nature of its work. The complimentary process of invoking the spirit of the guard into the high priest occurs less often. The high priest does invoke the God aspect on the half of the whole Coven, during the opening ritual by means of the great God Cernunnos invocation; and in the

Imbolc, spring Equinox. Midsummer, autumn Equinox, Samhain and Yule Festival rites, their high priestess invokes the spirit of the god into the high priest either specifically or by implication. But we have found that there are occasions when it is fitting that this invocation should have a weight and solemnity comparable with the drawing down of the moon. For example, there are times when the work in hand calls for an emphasis on balance of polarity between priestess and priest-on their gift of the goddess and the gift of the God in perfect harmony.

For those who have felt the need for such a rite. We offer the following-for which drawings down the sun seemed the natural title. Doreen Valiente thinks that there may once have been a ritual for this purpose in the craft, but it has been lost over the years.

Because the high priestess, representing the goddess is always in charge of the circle, we suggest that drawing down the moon should always precede drawing down the time the high priest then invokes the God aspect in the name of the goddess.

The preparation.

No particular preparation is needed for this ritual-except that the covenant possesses is a high priest crown, he should be wearing it.

The ritual

At the end of drawing down the moon after the high priestess words, “. Here, I charge you in this sign “, the high priestess and high priest change places, moving deosil , so that he stands with his back to the altar and she faces him from the centre of the circle.

The high priest picks up his Athame from the altar and holds it His right-hand over his left breast points upwards.

The high priestess gives him a five-fold kiss, as follows:

Blessed it be thy feet that have brought thee in these ways – kissing his right foot and then they’re left.

Blessed be thy knees that shall kneel at the sacred altar – kissing his right knee and then a left foot.

Blessed be thy phallus with out which we would not be – kissing him just above the pubic hair.

The high priest spread his arms to be the blessed position, still holding his Athame in his right-hand point upwards.

The high priestess continues,

blessed be thy breast, formed in strength-kissing his right breast, then the left will stop.

Blessed be thy lips that shall utter the sacred names. They embrace, length for length, and with feet touching and kiss each other on the mouth.

The high priestess steps back, a pace and kneels s. She invokes:

Deep calls on high, the goddess on the God,

On him who is the flame that quickens her;

That he and she may seize the silver reins

And ride as one the twin horse chariots.

Let the hammer strike the anvil,

Let the lightening touch earth,

Let the lance ensoul the Grail,

Let the magic come to birth,

She touches with the right forefinger is throats left in hip right breast left breast right hip, and throat again (thus forming their invoking pentagram of fire). She then spread their hands outwards, palms forward. Meanwhile, she continues to invoke;

In her name. Do I invoke thee,

Mighty father of us all-

Lugh Pan, Belin, Herne, Cernunnos-

Come in answer to my call!

Descend; I pray thee, in thy servant and priest.

The high priestess stands and takes a step backwards. The high priest makes the invoking pentagram of fire towards her with his Athame, saying. Let there be light!

Getting on the right path

Necronomicon Symbols 150x150 Getting on the right pathIt takes many years (well for me it did) of searching and learning before you truly find your own true path.

I was raised in a Christian environment and was baptised Catholic when I was eleven so I could attend a Catholic School. But the concept of a all-powerful male god just never fitted for me. I got interested in the Egyptian, Greek and Roman Gods The Idea that Gods had relationship, families and evolved from other forces made much more sense to me.

Being a child I did not have access to books on magic or other paths so much had little knowledge of the possibilities that where out their for me. All I knew was that the Christian God was not enough for me he seemed so small and incapable of doing his job.

I started to make up my own belief system it did involve spells, magick and the goddess. Although when I look back on it was a complete mess it contained circles from horror movies Cast in salt badly rhyming spells a [wikipedia]Christian[/wikipedia] god, [wikipedia]Mother Nature[/wikipedia] but it was my first steps.

This continued over the next few years the circles changes to just plain circles the pointless spell casting stopped even calling the deities declined and I found that I could connect with the energy of the planet certain places made me feel powerful while others made me feel drained, people would also bring on these changes at the same time I was coming into puberty.

With all my biological changes and the growing awareness that my sexual tendencies where not normal (at the time I thought that) and a feeling of being an outsider I question all aspects of my life especially my beliefs I still kept reading books on [wikipedia]magick[/wikipedia] and [wikipedia]witchcraft[/wikipedia] the first book that influence was Complete Book of Witchcraft (Llewellyn’s Practical Magick) Getting on the right path I worked through every lesson learning but still I was still alone a really had no idea what to call myself.

Then I can across the book that changed my life Power of the Witch – a Witch’s Guide to Her Craft Getting on the right pathIt where I first came across the word [wikipedia]Wicca[/wikipedia] and I final knew what I was and I declare myself [wikipedia]WITCH[/wikipedia]!.

Finally finding the word Wiccan gave me something to start looking for I then came across [wikipedia]The Pagan Federation[/wikipedia], which had so much information on paths and meetings. It gave me the opportunity to meet like-minded people so I started to attend the local moot and begin chatting to a few people who help become a Wiccan I learn the ways and finally ended up running my own group. Although I enjoyed working in and running a circle I much preferred working alone or with my partner who is northern tradition so about 15 years a going I went totally solitary.

If I were to give any advice about choosing your path I would say read as much find your local moot chat to people ask questions if possible find a circle that you find comfortable working a learn. Contact the pagan federation, look on line find sites that are about your desired path and keep notes. And the most important rule be true to your heart.
