Probably one of the easiest forms of divination pendulums and dowsing rods have been used since the 15th century and is said to have originated in Germany. And was listed as an act the broke the 1st commandment by Martin Luther in 1518. Dowsing rods have been used to find hidden object whither that be water, metals or illness with great accuracy. The basic principle of dowsing rods and pendulums is when the item one is searching for is close a reaction happens, dowsing rods cross or dip depending on type used while pendulums will swing up and down or left to right or even clockwise or anti clock wise depending on which crystal or substance is used as the weight. Dowsing rods come in two basic forms a forked branch (y shaped) made from Hazel or willow, which will dip or twitch when near desired item (normally minerals or water) or L shaped metal rods which will cross when over the desired object. While pendulums come in a range of styles shapes and made of many materials and have slightly wider uses than finding water or minerals. A pendulum is basically a weight at the end of a cord or chain and is used to gain answers to yes or no question. But they have so many uses from helping to choose which stocks and share to invest in to finding the compatibility between two people. Pendulums also use a form of sympathetic magick using like to find like these pendulums are made of

Sympathetic magick

Sympathetic magic is one of the oldest forms of magick, and has been linked to Cave paintings and to the Palaeolithic era. The Principle of Sympathetic magick is that what is created, imagined or acted out come to reality. It is widely viewed that Cave paintings are a form of Sympatric magick where the Cro-Magnon shamans, would retreat in to a cave, go into trance buy prescription drugs without prescription and paint the success of the hunt, in hunter societies they would also use dance to act out the Hunt with tribal members wearing animal skins being chased down by hunters who would then slay the beast showing the success of the coming hunt. These practices are still found in indigenous tribal cultures today. The rain dance in Native American culture is a great example of sympatric magicks the shaman will dance rising power until till the end where water is thrown into the sky the falling water is a symbol of rain the desire outcome from the dance. The principle being like for like sympatric magick is also a part of healing with the use of herbs and poppets. Healing herbs where colleted not based on any knowledge of chemical properties but on the likeness of the plant to the illness if you had red spots a shaman would use a plant with red spots if you had a brain fever a walnut be used due to it looking similar to the human brain. The idea being that if things look alike, act alike

Poppets

I have always loved poppets! I’m sure that my first experience of a poppet was from voodoo dolls! The idea of using an effigy for cursing or healing is using a form of sympathetic magick. Now I am sure that poppets feel out of favour due to the Voodoo doll but poppets have been around for centuries. The word poppet comes from the Middle English popet, meaning a small child or doll. A word still used today as a term of endearment. The poppet has many uses as they act as a physical representation of a absent person they become linked to the person by visualising and naming but the link can be made stronger by adding something from the person, hair (pubic, chest or armpit hair is better than head hair), nail clippings, fluids (tears, sweat, semen, urine, saliva or blood). Personal items from the subject should be given freely for good magicks or stolen for hexing and cursing. Since poppets are neutral tools they can be used for positives as well as negatives but remember the rule of three. Now poppets can be made from a number of substances carved root, grain or corn shafts, a fruit, paper, wax, a potato, clay, branches, or cloth stuffed with herbs although my favourite is cloth as they are easy to make and the amount of effort in creating them seem to be about just right for most spells. For simple spells then drawn on paper works and for complex healing and cursing wax or carving
