Meditation to find your totem animal

witchcat 150x150 Meditation to find your totem animalYourself in a relaxed place sitting or lying and begin to focus on your breath. Create a circle around you for protection. Start by visualising the door and see yourself opening the door as the door opens you can see a beautiful country scene, you can see into the deep green grass the beautiful blue sky you can hear the birds singing and the sweet smell of summer hanging in the air. You notice all around you huge trees you stare up through the branches of trees so high that you can feel your neck hurting as you strain to see the top of the trees so you look down at the trunk of the trees and you notice a small door you notice that every tree at the door so you choose one you feel comfortable opening.

As you open the door you can see a spiral staircase which leads both to the top of the tree and a deep inside the Earth you choose to travel down deep into the earth as you descend make not of any smells, textures that catch your eye when you reach the bottom you’ll be faced with another door this time it’s made from animal skin as you pull back the fur you find yourself in a very very large cave just a short distance from you see a pile stones shaped like a seat walk over and sit down.

The Cavan is well lit off in the distance you can make how to shiny eyes as you sit there and watch you feel that you are being watched but you sit patiently. in the silence you can hear the animal moving and you feel it watching you ever begin to gain confidence it will move out shadows and move towards you you recognise this animal and you instantly feel a connection with it. Allow the animal to come to you once you and animals have made a physical connection spend sometime getting to know this totem it is very likely you will be able to communicate verbally.

Once you have spent some time communicating and getting to know your totem there will be a point when you will need to leave when you do you will need to retrace your journey but you will find that your totem will follow you out and from that point forward will remain with you. As you need it.

Don’t forget once finished remember to ground yourself and write up any notes

Bjarki – The Journey so far

Helm Awe 150x150 Bjarki – The Journey so farOne of the often-asked questions is about how exactly did I, as a pagan got started?

As a child I grew up like most of us in a city, but I never felt connected to the place. I found at a young age that I felt more grounded and relaxed whenever I was out along the river or better still, outside the city in a huge park or the woodland where deer roamed freely.

Visiting those places was always like removing a heavy restrictive coat. Of course at such a young age (I am talking 7 or 8 years old), I did not get it or even really think about it. I just knew I felt better out under the trees or by a riverside. I should explain that I had no religion – my family were never inclined to any system of faith – my only exposure being at school with the dull morning assemblies with their hymn singing! So I had no preconceived ideas of divinity or religion, I just always found the teachings of Christianity dry and colourless.

As I grew older into my teens I did all the usual things a big kid does. I played rugby and basketball, got heavily into Martial Art, and studied old books on woodcraft, I found in a tatty old second hand shop. Although popular at school inside I felt a growing sense of something missing in my life, but didn’t know what it was.

I spent more and more time out of the city, in the woodlands, learning woodcraft and more about nature in all aspects. Sun, rain, sleet or snow I would be out in the woods – and I loved it.

A voracious reader, I found myself looking for the answers to my life. The problem was I didn’t really know what the questions were! At 18 event took place that change my perception of the world, people and myself, and I found myself in the darkest of existences – lost and alone.

Books were still important to me and I gradually found myself reading about the world religions, and actually reading the books of faith themselves, (the Bible, Quoran, dhammapada, Bhagavad Gita etc)

It seemed to me that all of these faiths had much that spoke to me – but none sang to my soul. Fed up, I gave up, but still read books on ancient civilisations, cultures, social structures etc. During this time I became interested in early Anglo Saxon settlers here in Briton and discovered that the Anglo peoples where called Engle – and were the original English! Fascinated, I took to researching these people, their homes, clothes, agriculture and hunting, weapons and methods of war, their social organisation – and of course their religion, And their I found my spiritual home!

I’d been trained in martial arts for, by then most of my life, I’d had been given my first set of runes at 16, and connected with them from the first, the woodcraft I’d learnt,  my love of nature etc – all of a sudden I understood! All my life their had been signs pointing me in the right direction – I just had not seen what was under my nose!

I explored in everyway I could, the more I learnt the more I felt I’d come home.

On the 21st March 1990 a dark, rainy night I formally dedicated my self to my faith and the Gods and Goddess therein, almost straight away the life long feeling of their being something missing vanished.

The past 20 years have been one of both outer and inner exploration. The runes I first had when I was 16 became worn down, and my interest had begun to move from the Norse Elder Furhrak to the Anglo Saxon Futhorc – From 24 runes to 33! My path is Northern Tradition, Anglo Saxon / Old English Runic and many years ago came across The word Oslac (one who sacrifices to god (/ divine)) and began using it as an easier label for the spiritual path I live.

I’ve done things the hard way, or in my view the right way! Finding my Fetch / fulgya /Spirit animal / totem etc took several attempts where I fasted, deprived my self of sleep and water, meditated for hours everyday and performed rune chants and rune stances until I collapsing. I became ill several times but persevered until – on actually giving in! I succeeded! I believe that we cannot truly be given gifts spiritually – we must earn them through practice.

As I’ve grown older I often look back and shake my head at some of the more austere rites I put myself through. How ever, my path has always been a warriors path, hardship and strife are both a test and a tempering of the spirit and let face it, if your not prepared to actually work for your knowledge who are you kidding? I understand my opinion isn’t necessarily right for everyone.

I once met a man calling himself a “Rune Master”. On equiring as to how long he’d been studying runes, I was told he’d been a rune user for 10 years! I explained that I’d been studying runes for, at the time, 23 years – and still only considered myself reasonably adept in them – so how did he justify the title of master? I don’t think he like me!

I understand that there are as many pagan paths to the divine as there are people – but as with anything else in life, you only get out what you put in. so make the effort1 a spirituality that is merely tagged on to your existing life is shallow, ephemeral illusion. Put the real work in – I guarantee it’ll be worth it

Death of a spirit guide

wolf3 300x198 Death of a spirit guideWhen I first started in the craft I was gifted with two spirit guides, one of these guides was a wonderful wolf who for the purpose of this peace we will just call “wolf”.

Now wolfs are very powerful totems they act as great teachers teaching much about magicks, and healing. The wolf also represents a journey in many paths.

Now I would spend a lot of time with wolf I felt his presence in my daily life he would warn me of oncoming danger, taught me how to transform into a mouse so I could ride on is back so we could travel long distances at speed.

He helped me find my true pagan path and eventually lead me to the goddess who had been calling me to her service for so many years.

My relationship with wolf was one of mutual respect and I would show honour to wolf with pictures of wolfs on my clothes and on my walls almost everywhere I went I left a trail of wolf icons.

Wolf came to me when I was just a child and stayed my friend, confident and my teacher for over 20 years. I would visit wolf in a sacred place marked with two trees most times wolf would be their at the gateway waiting for me other time he would be waiting in the grove, I learned that if he was in the grove he had left a lesson I was to learn along the path so I would have to seek the desired information.

One day as I entered my meditation to visit wolf I found that I found that the gateway would not manifest I also sensed another presence so I back out of my meditation and decided to try another day after reinforcing my wards.

With my wards fully in place I tried again although this time I could see the gateway a large dark form was still present I decided not to proceed in fear of leading something to wolf’s location. So I went off and sort some advice on how best to proceed I also spoke to my other spirit guide.

This time I was prepared I knew that I had to confront the dark form so I could get to wolf. As I entered the meditative state I could see the two trees and the entrance to the glade the dark form was guarding the entrance. The dark form was a large bear and I was prepared for battle and as I approached the bear he stood and greeted me a friendly soft greeting he told me that wolf was no longer here and he told me his name and asked me to follow him.

I refused pushing past him and running in to the glade dropping a barrier to prevent the creature from following as I entered the glade I saw the lifeless body of wolf lying on the ground I rushed over knelt down and cradled his head in my lap and begin to cry as I stroked wolfs head noticing how old he really was.

As I lamented the large bear came and sat beside me and placed his paw on my shoulder and explained that my time with wolf had come to and end and he was to be my new guide.

I must say that I was less than receptive to the bear in fact I was very hostile and did something I now regret I blasted him away sealing myself and wolf in a bubble I must of cried for hours as I remembered my time with wolf.

For weeks I was not myself so much so that I asked my second in command to take control of the group for me, which he did. For the next few weeks in every meditation and visualisation bear was present but at distance as he had leant that if he came close he would be blasted away.

Now my group would meet every Friday for training discussion and sharing information which was useful as it was an eclectic coven and their was much information that was shared and it had a few weeks before I could speak of my lose and how I felt and my experience although I never mentioned the bear as such I was still ignoring his existence.

My second in command almost laughed at me telling me that spirit guides die when they have no more to teach and I should be very lucky to have a replacement waiting it was one of the younger members of the group who then asked “is that why George has been standing behind you for the last few weeks” the whole group looked at this member and I said “George” to which the younger member replied “ya you know the Hofmeister Bear”, my second in command then said “you got a bear your so lucky”. Now after that meeting I did make my peace with “George” although it did take some time for him to come close but after many meeting where I did nothing but apologise for my behaviour he has become a true friend and a great teacher. “George” has helped me become the person and the witch I am today and in honour of “George” I have loads of little bears dotted around my home.
