Winter Deities

winter winter

As the year turn we move through the four seasons; spring filled with new hopes, and our thoughts turn to the maiden aspect of the Goddess, Summer and the time of warmth and love and our thought turn to mother aspect of the Goddess then Autumn the time of harvest and the crone aspect of the goddess and winter the time of death and rebirth and our thoughts turn to the dark aspect of the goddess. Winter is a time of darkness, coldness and in older times fear of not surviving through this period. Amongst all of this harshness there is hope and this hope is found in the Yule festival the point where the darkness begins to turn back to light and we face the promise of better days. Many of the deities associated with winter are also associated with death and rebirth in one form or another. While others deities are related to gift giving and hope of better days. Here is a list of deities and legendry figures associated to the winter and the Yule festival. Alcyone (Greek): A Greek demi-goddess, sometimes regarded as one of the Pleiades. More often she was thought of as the daughter of Aeolus and wife of Ceyx, son of Eosphorus and the king of Thessaly. They were very happy together, but then Ceyx perished in a shipwreck and Alcyone threw herself into the sea. Out of compassion, the gods changed them into the halcyon birds. Since Alcyone made her nest on the beach, and waves threatened

Beltane Solitary Ritual

maypole maypole

This ritual is originally from Wiccan Path by Rae Beth and is a lovely ritual for solitary wiccans, and great for the newbie I found that it lack the passion of Beltaine so for the less subdued of you I have made adjustment to the original text. Now I have used this ritual before so the adaptations are not new to me. For the beginner and for some people the idea of sex and sexuality can be a difficult subject to talk about when it comes to ritual. The one thing that you need to keep in mind is Beltane marks the union of the two deities, bringing new life to the earth and the keyword is UNION, which does mean sexual relations. We as pagan do not fear sex but embrace it’s a natural act. The reason I have included the adaptations is that it shows how you can take a very good ritual and without to much work make it personal or more in tune with the festival / Sabbat Preparation Before this ritual you should, spend some time, creating a wand. The wand should be 13 inches long and about half an inch thick. The tip of the wand should be carved into the shape of a phallus. Although it is acceptable to just use a branch with the bark peeled off. The wood should either be Oak or Hazel (remember. Do not take the word from a living tree). The wand should be placed on your alter a long, with a

Balancing the roles of a pagan

witchcat witchcat

As Pagans we have three roles in our life, these roles Farmer, Warrior and Priest and it does not matter what path you follow these roles exist (although may have different names). In many pagan paths three is an important number, the triple goddess, the three worlds (heaven , Earth and underworld), the three fold law, Birth / rebirth life and death and many others. So why is it the three role of a pagan are not often mentioned??? I think basically because in most cases the get mixed in and blended into the views buy drugs online without prescription and practices or particular paths – I know of a few paths that put some emphasis on the roles of a pagan. The roles themselves are like the goddess or god separate but part of the whole a pagan may spend their whole life dedicated to the role they have chosen and not achieve the balance they require as they neglect the two other role. Now each or the roles can be worked through like stages but ideally after time each role should become part of pagan and daily life. The Farmer The farmer role is about hard work and reward financially and spiritually it is often the biggest role we have in our daily lives, we like a farmer plant our seeds what them grow or fail we care for the land we live on even if it just the few square feet of our homes. The idea behind the farmer is about receiving

Brighid Pagans and Christians

brighid brighid

Known as the Goddess of healers, poets, smiths, childbirth and inspiration, fire and hearth, Brighid is the classic Celtic Triple Goddess. Brighid is the Daughter of the Dagda and one of the Tuatha Dé Danann, Brighid one of the more universal deities of the pagan Gaelic world. Brighid is possibly one of the most important goddess in British and Irish history but like most deities much of her history has been lost since most of the information about her was passed on through oral tradition. Any written documentation was written after she was transformed by the Church into St. Brigid (aprox 453 C.E.), which make almost impossible to discern where the goddess starts and the saint begins, An t-Athair Sean O’Quinn a renowned Irish Celtic scholar is quoted saying “It is an exercise in futility to try and separate the historical Christian Brighid from the Goddess since clearly the two are so interwoven.” There is a possibility that St. Brighid may have been a priestess of Brighid and through a blending of pagan Christian beliefs that the cult of Brighid was absorbed into the Christian faith and the role of priestess became the role of a nun. Brighid is the Goddess of healing, craft (predominantly smith crafts) and poetry, and wisdom. She is the Goddess of fire, the hearth and energy. She is the Goddess of fertility and is said to lean over every cradle. She is associated with sovereignty and protection of her isles and the sea. Brighid is the goddess of all things

Triple Goddess and its roots in Wicca and beyond

In Wicca the Goddess is the mother the female aspect of the divine and is referred to as the goddess in triple aspect. The aspect of the goddess are Maiden, Mother and the crone and these aspects are attributed to the aspects of the moon the maiden is the waxing moon, the full moon the Mother and the waning moon is the crone. Although the truth to me is that there are four aspects of the goddess and the fourth being the new or dark moon this aspect of the goddess, which is the mystery of the goddess where she can appear in any form, Maiden, Mother or Crone. This aspect is also referred to as the Dark goddesses these are goddess in rage like Demeter when she lost Persephone or Goddess whose realm is death and rebirth. In Wicca the Triple aspect Goddess is referred to as the Queen of Heaven and is seen as a complete goddess a huntress whose relationships with the horned god (her son and lover) are played out in the Wheel of the year. Some not all Wiccan will use ancient names and call the lady by name this is basically because the deity they have chosen to “Call” the lady is an archetype that embodies the values that they stand for. When this is done groups move from pure Wicca and in to a developing off shoot. Although I was trained many years ago as Wiccan the Triple goddess imagery has changed for me her aspects have changed
