Lesser Known Gods and Demi-Gods of Greece

AloverstreesGod and Goddess 150x150 Lesser Known Gods and Demi Gods of GreeceListed below is a selected list of many of the lesser-known gods and demi-gods of Greece that have apparently been ignored or forgotten by historians for various and sundry reasons. Some of these gods were obviously important and useful in everyday life habits, others apparently had no redeeming value whatsoever, but somehow achieved god- or goddesshood. This list is presented here in the hopes that it will prove helpful to someone somewhere, sometime.

Egregious – God of Errors

Though he spent virtually all his life with the other gods and goddesses on Mount Olympus, he is rumored to have left for a short vacation to the south of France where he met and had an affair with the French goddess, Faux Pas. Egregious was one of the smartest gods on Mount Olympus. In fact, many thought he might be as smart as Zeus, though no one would ever admit this publicly. However, his unfortunate habit of making so many mistakes kept him from becoming one of the better-known gods.

When asked how someone so smart could make so many stupid mistakes, his reply was always “You learn from your mistakes. Obviously, I’ve made so many mistakes, I’ve become a genius!”

Melanoma – God of Tanning

Often seen away from Mount Olympus and down along the sandy beaches of southern Greece, Melanoma could have been ranked up there with the other major gods of his time, He was strong, handsome, and had a body that attracted all the goddesses. His only major fault was getting involved with the mortal Macedonian strip queen, Ultra Violet.

The two of them constantly played naked in the sun along the Greek shoreline. Zeus, upon seeing Melanoma cavorting with a non-Olympian, decided to punish him by taking away his immortality. This didn’t seem to bother Melanoma at first and he continued to associate with Ultra Violet and played in the buff each day. Soon though, Melanoma started to notice small dark patches on his skin that eventually became cancerous. He died a quick, but horrible death, with Ultra Violet at his side till the very end.

Ozone – God of Memory

Ozone was another failed god. Upon attaining godhood, Zeus asked Ozone to choose the subject for which he would be revered for all time. He chose Memory. To celebrate his attaining full godliness, Ozone married his school sweetheart, Amnesia. However, their foggy relationship soon resulted in the complete loss of all the records of all the great gods on Mount Olympus.

Zeus retaliated by immediately expelling Ozone to Southern California, where he was held prisoner in the dreaded “Inversion Layer” along with the evil nether-world dragon-god of progress and technology, Smog.

Pancreas – Demi-god of Dessert

Father of the sugar gods, Arabinose, Fructose, and Glucose.

Pancreas was a short-lived god who spent most of his time on coffee breaks eating donuts. His marriage to Diabetes was no help to him at all and he died soon after they had their three sons.

Peristalsis – God of Bowel Movements

Revered for his strength and perseverance, Peristalsis occupied a special place in the bathrooms of old Greece. Figurines in his likeness stood next to or near the place of anal evacuation. A special prayer to Peristalsis often accompanied a trip to the bathroom in some of the better bathrooms of high-society Greeks.

Uvula – Goddess of Swallowing

Uvula was an often unappreciated goddess who spent most of her time at the back of the room of all the other gods and goddesses on Mount Olympus. Only when she cleared her throat did anyone bother to pay any attention to her. She originally came from Rome and was accepted into the Greek goddess system, but only because of the promise she showed. She was reported to spend some time with the god Fellatio (a part-Italian god) who promised to show her something she could do that would make her one of the most revered goddesses of all of Mount Olympus (at least by the gods there). They were to meet one hot and steamy night under an olive tree where Fellatio would show her what she could do. Unfortunately, Fellatio never came.

Zirconia – Goddess of Costume Jewelry

Often in direct competition with the goddesses Titanium and Platinum, Zirconia was pretty much always relegated to being allowed only to attend the lesser parties on Mount Olympus at which the great gods and goddesses were rarely present. As a result, Zirconia was subsequently ignored by most historians and now only shows up on the backs of magazines for really cheap prices.

In Search of the god

pan childwall 150x150 In Search of the god

Pan (Greek) The goat god of music and nature, depicted with panpipes, erect penis and chasing after maidens and men, particularly shepherds.

Does the male aspect of the divine have a slightly less important role in worship than the goddess? Well yes and no well for me any way. I am not sure if it partly because I have hang-ups over the catholic and Christian version of the divine or that my early introductions to Wicca and other pagan paths which put more emphasis on the goddess or that my path lead me to be a priest of one goddess.

The idea of the God is often seen as consult to the goddess a mate or lover I am sure that when we look at the god in greater detail that we find that he has been somewhat castrated in traditions that put more influence on the goddess.

The God aspect of the divine is an equal and opposite of the goddess and should be seen in no less than an equal standing with the goddess. The god like the goddess has many different guises and roles. One of which is the consort or lover to the goddess aspect.

Like the goddess that God can be seen in the three major forms, a youth. A husband or lover, and finally, as a sage or wise man. These three stages mimic the three stages of the goddess. In some mythology is that God is seen to grow as a person through the follies of youth into a triumphant husband. And finally wise king. In others these roles are played out amongst the male members of a pantheon.

But no matter how the male aspect of the divine is seen. He must always be considered to be the opposite of the goddess, a positive to a negative, a light to a dark a yin to a yan. The divine form cannot exist without this duality.

This duality is where life is created, not just material physical living life. But the underlying threads of existence that hold the universe in place.

This male aspect is strongly linked in our minds with the supposed roles of a man, someone strong, aggressive war like sexually potent, a leader and a father. The roles that are deemed by society to be the roles of the man.

It is as social backgrounds that lead us to creating massively archetypes, which form an image of the gods and the gods we choose to worship in life. They become our role models at home personal father figures.

In Duotheistic belief structures that God and goddess are basically seen as mother and father, while polytheistic beliefs. The gods and goddesses are brother’s sisters are aunts and uncles and cousins and extended family as well as mother and father. A bit like the divine Mafia, each member of the family as a role to play the job to do a purpose.

It’s easier to understand the role of the God in a Duotheistic belief structure, because it is just a simple as, masculine and feminine one of the reasons. I had difficulty with the God aspect in this dual form, was the connection. I had to a father figure, since there was nothing like my father. I needed to find a male archetype. I wanted to be like. I’ve found that not one God had all the things I was seeking remembering that all gods are but one god.

As well as the fact my patron goddess is not known for relationships, and often prefers to work alone, requiring no consort.

So, in searching for a male aspect for ritual and spell work. I needed to find deities, who one would work well with the goddess and work with me during the search for God. I needed to look at my own life and find the things that were important to me. And that echoes in the archetypal form of the male deity. The first thing that sprang to mind was my sexuality, as it is considered by society Not to be manly. So I sought out gay gods basically. I tried working with pan, but I did not feel comfortable, and then came across Apollo and although I felt much more comfortable. Something still was not quite right, and then I came across Hermes and found it much more comfortable and acceptable. Not just myself to my goodness.

I am sure that my understanding and personal experiences with family and church made my concept of the God a difficult idea to come to terms with the relationship. A person has their divine beings; the God or goddess is a personal and unique relationship. The closer we match our personality to the divine. The closer our relationship will become. When seeking the God do not be constrained by the visions of others look to yourself to find the God within. Start by looking at what is most important to you, then looks the gods, you share your interests then through the Common ground. Can your connection with the divine, become a truly solid and beneficial relationship. Below is a list of gods, who appear in gay themed myths

Apollo & Hyacinth (Greek) – Apollo, a god of music, dance, healing and inspiration, is known for taking male lovers, most notably Hyacinth. Hyacinth was mortally wounded. Unable to save his beloved, Apollo created the Hyacinth flower from his blood. Hyacinth later became a divine patron to those pursuing same sex love.

Artemis (Greek) – Artemis is the huntress, the goddess of the Moon and the protector of women and children. Artemis rejects traditional roles, such as marriage, and feels kinship to those beyond traditional roles. Her festivals included same sex worship from men and women.

Astarte (Phoenician/Canaanite) – Astarte is a manifestation of the Great Mother, sometimes depicted as a hermaphrodite. Astarte’s temples were served by the kelabim, a gay male priest caste.

Chin (Mayan) – Chin, a small child or dwarf god, introduced homoerotic relationships to the Mayan nobles. The nobles obtained youths of the lower classes to be the lovers of the noble’s sons. Such unions were considered legal marriages under Mayan law.

Dionysus (Greek) – As a god of wine, madness, poetry and love, Dionysus is depicted as soft and feminine, yet virile and strong. He wore women’s clothing to hide from his stepmother’s wrath. Dionysus became lovers with the gods Adonis and Hermaphrodite.

Eros, Hermes & Hercules (Greek) – Eros, Hermes and Hercules granted blessings upon male couples, the gifts of loyalty, eloquence and strength, respectively. Eros was called upon by warrior-lovers before a fight, because the ancient Greeks believed victory is often achieved because of the love between men.

Ganesha (Hindu) – Most popularly depicted as a four armed, plump man with an elephant’s head, Ganesha is the breaker of obstacles and linked to homoerotic worship involving anal sex. Ganesha is mixed in terms of sexuality, masculine in gender, but soft, tender and portrayed with breasts.

Odin (Norse) – Viewed as the all father and creator, Odin would often disguise himself as a woman. His relationship with his blood brother, Loki, had homoerotic overtones, and he studied the feminine mysteries of the goddess Freya.

Pan (Greek) The goat god of music and nature, depicted with panpipes, erect penis and chasing after maidens and men, particularly shepherds.

Set & Horus (Egyptian) – Horus, the divine child, was in constant conflict with his uncle Set, but one story survives of oral intercourse between Set and Horus, and Set ultimately gives birth to Horus’ child. Gay priests served Horus’ mother, the goddess Isis, in ancient Egypt.

Zeus (Greek) – Zeus is a sky god and well known for his sexual liaisons, including his male cupbearer Ganymede. In ancient material, he is transgendered as Zeus Arrhenothelus, both mother and father.

Persephone

persephone and hades 202x300 PersephoneThe myths surrounding Persephone has always been my favourites, the mix of love and revenge, of life and death and rebirth.

Persephone is the queen of the Underworld wife to Hades (her uncle) she was the daughter of Zeus and Demeter.

The Myth of Persephone and the Underworld is a myth that if wrote today would probably be a best seller, it is a mix of kidnap, arranged marriage, mental instability and Horror. Not only dose it contain all that it contain the ability to read your own story into it.

One of the biggest questions to ask when looking at Persephone is did she love Hades? Was she in on it? Did she choose a life in the underworld rather than returning to an over baring mother?

The Basic story states that Persephone was playing with her nymphs in a flowery meadow when the earth opens and out rides Hades and grabs Persephone and carries her to the Underworld.

The Goddess Hecate heard Persephone’s cries and informs Demeter and together the search the Earth using Hecate’s torches to light the way. When they cannot find her Hecate suggest the Demeter asks Helios. Helios informs Demeter what happens and Demeter then partitions Zeus to intervene.

Zeus refuses to help and lets it slip he assisted by giving his permission for the abduction to place. In a blind rage Demeter refuses to let anything grow on earth until Persephone is returned to her, at that moment all the plants withered on earth. Some say Demeter wander the earth going madder and madder with grief.

During this time Persephone grow in to her role of wife and Queen of the Underworld although it is said that she missed her mother. While Persephone was in the Under world the Earth was racked with famine and Demeter’s grief continued to grow seeing this Zeus heart softened and he relented he summons Hermes and informs him that Persephone is commanded to return to her Mother.

Hermes then travels to the Underworld and informs Hades and Persephone of Zeus command. Knowing that no God or mortal can refuse a command from Zeus. So as she was leaving to return to her mother Hades offers her a pomegranate. Persephone new that if she ate any of the food from the underworld she would be bound to the Underworld and Not even Zeus could force her to leave, So she are 6 (some say 7 others 4 I like 6 as it make more sense) pomegranate seeds.

Hermes Knowing he could not complete his task and knowing that Zeus would be most upset that his commands where not completed. So he opens a negotiation between Demeter and Hades after what must have been a very difficult negotiation it is agreed that because Persephone did not eat the whole pomegranate that she could return to her mother for part of the time.

Some stories say the 4 months of winter while other say six months for myself I like the idea that she leaves in autumn and returns in spring, the trees drawing back in to the earth the earth slowly dying a way in time with Demeter’s lose and as time moves on Demeter grief increases just like any mother with their child away. Well until the mind set change from my babies going to be a way for x number of weeks to my babies back in x weeks. I often see the solstice as this point of change as it part of our nature soon as the solstice arrives people start saying x number weeks to spring.

As I start preparing for Imbolc my thoughts always focus on Persephone and that first daffodil just poking out of the ground heralding her arrival.

The abduction of Persephone is but one of the legends of Persephone and in each myth she is a kind and giving goddess. Persephone was willing to help Psyche pass Aphrodite’s tests so that Psyche could be reunited with her beloved husband she also helped Heracles (Hercules), loaning him Cerberus, the ferocious three-headed dog that guarded the entrance of the underworld, so that he could complete the Twelve Labours he’d been assigned to make retribution for the death of his wife.

Persephone is the keeper of dark knowledge and sometime is part of the triple goddess that includes Hecate as maiden, Persephone as bride and Demeter as crone sometimes called the Dark Demeter.

A personal view of Hecate

HecateWheel 150x1503 A personal view of HecateHecate or Hakate in my mind is one of the most important goddess and saying that very little is known of her. Even her origins are a bit of a mystery even her parentage is a mystery some say Perses and Asteria, others say Zeus and Hera or as Hesiod claims Uranus and Gaia where her parents. While other says she travelled from a distant land while some say she was not a god but the only Titan that kept their powers. It is said that Zeus held her in high esteem either through Fear or respect and she was giving dominion over the Heavens, the Earth, the Sea and the Underworld a honour that no other god or goddess had.

Hecate has the control over life and death and Magicks and witchcraft basically she has control over every aspect of life and although she is a very very powerful goddess she can be very difficult to work with especial for men. Hecate demands loyalty from her followers she does have a tendency to turn men mad (can speck from personal experience) but her rewards are boundless.

Hecate has many guises and is one of very few goddesses, who are in triple aspect; the image of Hecate can be a maiden, a mother or a crone although most modern depictions of her are that of the crone. For me she is more force than form a guiding light that has lead me to a greater understanding of myself and of Magicks.

Hecate rule the in-between places such as doorways and dusk and dawn so communicating with her is easy for those brave enough to call on her. These in-between places are not the only place where you can meet Hecate and worship her; one of the most common places to meet her is crossroad, where one should always leave an offering or the Hecate Supper (a special meal created as an offering to Hecate).

I will say that Hecate will choose her followers and test them, for me it took nearly 25 years to fully connect with Hecate as a personal deity but as I look back over my life I can see her guiding hand directing the threads of my life to get me to where I am today, She appeared in many guises and left many symbols along the way. And many of the tests she put me through to see if I was worthy most of them where very painful and difficult at the time.

Through her guidance I moved through Wiccan and began to develop my own path and although my personal path mixes other tradition and does not fit any pagan path fully I have learn to understand that no one can follow  my path they can only follow their own.

I found that Hecate needs no other Gods or Goddesses for rituals or spell working but will work well with deities even those from different cultures to achieve a goal. I believe this happens because Hecate is more than a single goddess within a pantheon She is a deity that appears in other cultural paths, her roles are mirrored in pagan paths, most pagan cultures have a dark goddess that rule over life, death and magicks.

Being called a dark goddess is not a term that should encourage fear but understand as humans we fear the darker side of ourselves our ‘fears’ Hecate is the light that banishes these fears through understanding or simply put Hecate will make you face your fears.

Hecate has a great sense of humour and enjoys a good laugh normally at the cost of her priest and priestess.

Hecate like isolation and quite places and is easily called upon in meditation or through visualisation. To contact Hecate, find yourself a quite place and call on her do not visualise her form she will choose which guise which many not be human. Animals associated with Hecate are all wild creatures, the creatures of the night but she is most associated with dogs. But no matter in what form she appears in she will depart great knowledge but remember it may not be what you to hear.

 A personal view of Hecate

Origins of Love–Soul Mates

Origin of Love 150x1502 Origins of Love–Soul MatesWhenever I think of love there is one song that always seem to explain love to me. It’s based on Plato’s Symposium. February is a month is a month when everyone has love on his or her mind.

The problem is love is just being a relationship with someone. Love never comes in the packages we desire or when we want it to, love is the most surprising thing.

Love is something that comes in many forms from the love we share with family and friends, the love we share with lovers to the most unexpected loves that can destroy us or improve us.

Whatever type of love it is it a sacred gift a gift from the divine the ability to share ourselves completely with another person. For many years I would describe love as an emotion often discussed but rarely felt, mainly because I had not found my soul mate I had been relationships some very good but always doomed to end but that’s just life we are always searching for that perfect person.

Now I can remember a friend telling me when I was about 16 never to look for love as love will only arrive when your not looking for it. I never understood that statement until I met my soul mate as I was not looking for love and did really need to be in a relationship as I had to many other things going on at the time.

But without noticing I got a cupid bow in my ass and before I new it I was head over heals. As my relationship bloomed and I got to know about my partner I could see that our lives had travelled the same path we where so alike and we shared so much in common.

Now this relationship took about 5 – 6 years to get to the stage where started going out as a couple. Although this was a strange way of getting together the bonds between us where always slow drawing us together to we finally end up in the same place miles away from our original homes. It was like all of our lives had lead us to a single point in time but it was much more than as if it was not for our shared beliefs we would never of met in fact we probably passed each other every few days without meeting.

I have come to believe that true love is something that is eternal and shared by true soul mates our other sides and the poem and song below can sum up the idea of why we seek love and our soul mate.

Origins of Love

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YO9FpWX57E']

When the earth was still flat,
And the clouds made of fire,
And mountains stretched up to the sky,
Sometimes higher,
Folks roamed the earth
Like big rolling kegs.
They had two sets of arms.
They had two sets of legs.
They had two faces peering
Out of one giant head
So they could watch all around them
As they talked; while they read.
And they never knew nothing of love.
It was before the origin of love.

The origin of love

And there were three sexes then,
One that looked like two men
Glued up back to back,
Called the children of the sun.
And similar in shape and girth
Were the children of the earth.
They looked like two girls
Rolled up in one.
And the children of the moon
Were like a fork shoved on a spoon.
They were part sun, part earth
Part daughter, part son.

The origin of love

Now the gods grew quite scared
Of our strength and defiance
And Thor said,
“I’m gonna kill them all
With my hammer,
Like I killed the giants.”
And Zeus said, “No,
You better let me
Use my lightening, like scissors,
Like I cut the legs off the whales
And dinosaurs into lizards.”
Then he grabbed up some bolts
And he let out a laugh,
Said, “I’ll split them right down the middle.
Gonna cut them right up in half.”
And then storm clouds gathered above
Into great balls of fire

And then fire shot down
From the sky in bolts
Like shining blades
Of a knife.
And it ripped
Right through the flesh
Of the children of the sun
And the moon
And the earth.
And some Indian god
Sewed the wound up into a hole,
Pulled it round to our belly
To remind us of the price we pay.
And Osiris and the gods of the Nile
Gathered up a big storm
To blow a hurricane,
To scatter us away,
In a flood of wind and rain,
And a sea of tidal waves,
To wash us all away,
And if we don’t behave
They’ll cut us down again
And we’ll be hopping round on one foot
And looking through one eye.

Last time I saw you
We had just split in two.
You were looking at me.
I was looking at you.
You had a way so familiar,
But I could not recognize,
Cause you had blood on your face;
I had blood in my eyes.
But I could swear by your expression
That the pain down in your soul
Was the same as the one down in mine.
That’s the pain,
Cuts a straight line
Down through the heart;
We called it love.
So we wrapped our arms around each other,
Trying to shove ourselves back together.
We were making love,
Making love.
It was a cold dark evening,
Such a long time ago,
When by the mighty hand of Jove,
It was the sad story
How we became
Lonely two-legged creatures,
It’s the story of
The origin of love.
That’s the origin of love.

The Origin of Love” is a song from the stage show Hedwig and the Angry Inch and subsequent film written by John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask. Stephen Trask wrote the song, which is based on a story from Plato’s Symposium.
